Tel Beer Sheva has been excavated in full: an oval-planned Israelite town of the ninth and eighth centuries BC, with a three-chambered gate, houses backing onto the wall, a drainage system, and a well over forty metres deep beside the entrance. The horned altar on site is a reconstruction from reused blocks found in a storehouse; the original is in a museum.

In the northern Negev, on the edge of the modern city of Beer Sheva, about 115 km south of Jerusalem.
