On the eastern bank, excavation since 1996 has uncovered Byzantine churches, baptismal pools and a pillared chapel beside the old channel, identified with John’s Bethany “beyond the Jordan”. Facing it on the western bank, Qasr al-Yahud marks the same event with steps going down into the water. The river is only a few metres wide here.
- Where it is
- In Jordan, 9 km north of the Dead Sea and about 50 km from Jerusalem; the western-bank site lies in the West Bank, directly opposite.
