Tell el-Alayiq holds the winter palaces of the Hasmoneans and of Herod on both banks of the Wadi Qelt: pools, sunken gardens and a reception hall built in opus reticulatum by workmen brought from Italy. In the town an old sycamore is pointed out as Zacchaeus’ tree, on the strength of custom alone.
