Can you visit it today?

An isolated limestone dome 588 m high, crowned by Barluzzi’s Franciscan basilica of 1924, built over Byzantine and Crusader churches whose apses are left exposed in the forecourt. The Transfiguration tradition here is attested from the fourth century; the Gospels say only “a high mountain”, and Hermon has also been proposed. The road up is a series of hairpin bends.
