1Mirad qué amor nos ha mostrado el Padre, para que seamos llamados hijos de Dios. Y lo somos; por eso el mundo no nos conoce a nosotros, porque a Él no lo conoció. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we would be called, and would become, the sons of God. Because of this, the world does not know us, for it did not know him.2Carísimos, ya somos hijos de Dios aunque todavía no se ha manifestado lo que seremos. Mas sabemos que cuando se manifieste seremos semejantes a Él, porque lo veremos tal como es. Most beloved, we are now the sons of God. But what we shall be then has not yet appeared. We know that when he does appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.3Entretanto quienquiera tiene en Él esta esperanza se hace puro, así como Él es puro. And everyone who holds this hope in him, keeps himself holy, just as he also is holy.4Quienquiera obra el pecado obra también la iniquidad, pues el pecado es la iniquidad. Everyone who commits a sin, also commits iniquity. For sin is iniquity.5Y sabéis que Él se manifestó para quitar los pecados, y que en Él no hay pecado. And you know that he appeared in order that he might take away our sins. For in him there is no sin.6Quien permanece en Él no peca; quien peca no le ha visto ni conocido. Everyone who abides in him does not sin. For whoever sins has not seen him, and has not known him.7Hijitos, que nadie os engañe; el que obra la justicia es justo según es justo Él. Little sons, let no one deceive you. Whoever does justice is just, even as he also is just.8Quien comete pecado es del diablo, porque el diablo peca desde el principio. Para esto se manifestó el Hijo de Dios: para destruir las obras del diablo. Whoever commits sin is of the devil. For the devil sins from the beginning. For this reason, the Son of God appeared, so that he might eradicate the works of the devil.9Todo el que ha nacido de Dios no peca, porque en él permanece la simiente de Aquel y no es capaz de pecar por cuanto es nacido de Dios. All those who have been born of God do not commit sin. For the offspring of God abides in them, and he is not able to sin, because he was born of God.10En esto se manifiestan los hijos de Dios y los hijos del diablo: cualquiera que no obra justicia no es de Dios, y tampoco aquel que no ama a su hermano. In this way, the sons of God are made manifest, and also the sons of the devil. Everyone who is not just, is not of God, as also anyone who does not love his brother.11Porque este es el mensaje que habéis oído desde el principio: que nos amemos unos a otros. For this is the announcement that you heard from the beginning: that you should love one another.12No como Caín, que siendo del Maligno mató a su hermano. Y ¿por qué le mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, y las de su hermano justas. Do not be like Cain, who was of the evil one, and who killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked, but his brother’s works were just.13No os extrañéis, hermanos, de que el mundo os odie. If the world hates you, brothers, do not be surprised.14Nosotros conocemos que hemos pasado de la muerte a la vida, porque amamos a los hermanos. El que no ama se queda en la muerte. We know that we have passed from death to life. For we love as brothers. Whoever does not love, abides in death.15Todo el que odia a su hermano es homicida; y sabéis que ningún homicida tiene permanente en sí vida eterna. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding within him.16En esto hemos conocido el amor, en que Él puso su vida por nosotros; así nosotros debemos poner nuestras vidas por los hermanos. We know the love of God in this way: because he laid down his life for us. And so, we must lay down our lives for our brothers.17Quien tiene bienes de este mundo, y ve a su hermano padecer necesidad y le cierra sus entrañas ¿de qué manera permanece el amor de Dios en él? Whoever possesses the goods of this world, and sees his brother to be in need, and yet closes his heart to him: in what way does the love of God abide in him?18Hijitos, no amemos de palabra, y con la lengua, sino de obra y en verdad. My little sons, let us not love in words only, but in works and in truth.19En esto conoceremos que somos de la verdad, y podremos tener seguridad en nuestro corazón delante de Él, In this way, we will know that we are of the truth, and we will commend our hearts in his sight.20cualquiera sea el reproche que nos haga nuestro corazón, porque Dios es más grande que nuestro corazón y lo sabe todo. For even if our heart reproaches us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows all things.21Y si el corazón no nos reprocha, carísimos, tenemos plena seguridad delante de Dios; Most beloved, if our heart does not reproach us, we can have confidence toward God;22y cuanto pedimos lo recibimos de Él, porque guardamos sus mandamientos y hacemos lo que es agradable en su presencia. and whatever we shall request of him, we shall receive from him. For we keep his commandments, and we do the things that are pleasing in his sight.23Y su mandamiento es este: que creamos en el nombre de su Hijo Jesucristo, y nos amemos unos a otros, como Él nos mandó. And this is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he has commanded us.24Quien guarda sus mandamientos habita en Dios y Dios en él; y en esto conocemos que Él mora en nosotros: por el Espíritu que nos ha dado. And those who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And we know that he abides in us by this: by the Spirit, whom he has given to us.
