1Muchos días después, en el tercer año, fue dirigida esta palabra de Yahvé a Elías: “Ve, muéstrate a Acab, pues voy a dar lluvia a la tierra.” After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”2Partió Elías para presentarse a Acab. El hambre era grande en Samaria; Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.3por lo cual Acab llamó a Abdías, que era mayordomo de su casa. Abdías era muy temeroso de Yahvé, And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.4pues cuando Jezabel exterminaba a los profetas de Yahvé, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió, cincuenta en una cueva y cincuenta en otra, sustentándolos con pan y agua. For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.5Y dijo Acab a Abdías: “Da una vuelta por todo el país hacia todas las fuentes de agua y hacia todos los arroyos; quizás hallaremos pastos para conservar con vida a los caballos y mulos y evitar la destrucción del ganado.” Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”6Y se repartieron entre sí el país para recorrerlo. Acab iba por un camino, y Abdías separadamente por el otro. And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.7Estando Abdías de camino, he aquí que Elías le salió al encuentro. Le reconoció y cayó sobre su rostro diciendo: “¿Eres Tú, mi señor Elías?” And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”8Él le respondió: “Yo soy. Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías.” And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”9Replicó (Abdías): “¿En qué he pecado yo para que tú entregues a tu siervo en manos de Acab, a fin de que me mate? And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?10Vive Yahvé, tu Dios, que no hay pueblo ni reino adonde no haya enviado mi señor a buscarte; y cuando decían: No está, hacía jurar a aquel reino y a aquel pueblo que no te habían hallado. As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.11¡Y ahora tú dices: Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías! And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’12Y, además, cuando yo te deje, el Espíritu de Yahvé te llevará yo no sé dónde, y cuando yo vaya a decírselo a Acab; resulta que él no podrá hallarte y me matará, bien que yo, tu siervo, amo a Yahvé desde mi niñez. And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.13¿Acaso nunca han contado a mi señor lo que hice yo cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas de Yahvé; cómo yo escondía cien profetas de Yahvé, cincuenta en una cueva, y cincuenta en otra, sustentándolos con pan y agua? Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?14Y ahora tú me dices: Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías. De seguro me matará.” And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”15Respondió Elías: “Vive Yahvé de los Ejércitos, a quien yo sirvo, que hoy mismo me presentaré (a Acab).” And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”16Marchó, pues, Abdías para encontrar a Acab, y le dio la noticia. Y Acab salió al encuentro de Elías. Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.17Luego que Acab vio a Elías, le dijo: “¿Tú aquí, perturbador de Israel?” And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”18Respondió él: “No he perturbado yo a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, porque habéis dejado los mandamientos de Yahvé y tú has ido tras los Baales. And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.19Ahora bien, manda congregar conmigo a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo; también a los profetas de Baal, cuatrocientos cincuenta, y a los profetas de Aschera, cuatrocientos, que comen a la mesa de Jezabel.” Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”20Convocó, pues, Acab a todos los hijos de Israel, y congregó a los profetas en el monte Carmelo. Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.21Entonces Elías, acercándose a todo el pueblo, dijo: “¿Hasta cuándo estaréis claudicando hacia dos lados? Si Yahvé es Dios, seguidle; y si lo es Baal, id tras él.” Mas el pueblo no le respondió palabra. Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.22Dijo, pues, Elías al pueblo: “He quedado yo solo de los profetas de Yahvé, cuando los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres. And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.23Désenos dos toros; y escójanse ellos un toro, y cortándolo en pedazos pónganlo sobre la leña, sin aplicarle fuego, y yo prepararé el otro toro, y lo colocaré sobre la leña, sin poner fuego. Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.24E invocad el nombre de vuestro dios, y yo invocaré el nombre de Yahvé. Aquel dios que respondiere con el fuego, ese sea Dios.” Respondió todo el pueblo: “¡Bien dicho!” Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”25Dijo entonces Elías a los profetas de Baal: “Escogeos uno de los toros y preparadlo primero, porque sois más numerosos, e invocad el nombre de vuestro dios; mas sin poner fuego.” Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”26Tomaron, pues, el toro que les había sido dado y lo prepararon, invocando el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, gritando: “¡Baal, respóndenos!” Pero no había voz, ni quien respondiese, a pesar de que estaban saltando alrededor del altar que habían hecho. And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.27Al mediodía se burlaba de ellos Elías, diciendo: “Gritad más fuerte, ya que es dios. Está tal vez meditando, o se ha retirado, o está de viaje; o tal vez duerma y hay que despertarlo.” And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”28Gritaban, pues, a toda fuerza, sajándose, según su costumbre, con cuchillos y lanzas hasta chorrear la sangre sobre ellos. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.29Pasado ya el mediodía, siguieron delirando hasta (la hora en que suele) ofrecerse el sacrificio sin que hubiese voz, ni quien respondiera ni atendiese. Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.30Entonces dijo Elías a todo el pueblo: “Acercaos a mí.” Se le acercó todo el pueblo, y él se puso a preparar el altar de Yahvé que estaba derribado. Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.31Tomó Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dirigida la palabra de Yahvé, que decía: “Israel será tu nombre.” And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”32Con estas piedras edificó un altar al nombre de Yahvé, y alrededor del altar hizo una zanja, tan grande como para sembrar dos medidas de semilla. And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.33Luego dispuso la leña, y cortando en trozos al toro, lo puso encima de la leña, y dijo: “Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua y vertedla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña.” And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.34Después dijo: “Hacedlo por segunda vez”, y lo hicieron por segunda vez. Y repitió: “Hacedlo por tercera vez”, y lo hicieron por tercera vez; And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.35de suerte que corría el agua alrededor del altar; y también la zanja la hizo llenar de agua. And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.36A la hora (en que suele) ofrecerse el sacrificio (de la tarde), se acercó el profeta Elías, y dijo: “¡Oh Yahvé, Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac y de Israel, hoy sea notorio que Tú eres Dios en Israel y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por orden tuya he hecho todas estas cosas! And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.37¡Respóndeme, Yahvé, respóndeme, para que sepa este pueblo que Tú, Yahvé, eres Dios, que conviertes el corazón de ellos de nuevo (a Ti)!” Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”38En ese momento bajó fuego de Yahvé y consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el polvo, lamiendo incluso el agua que había en la zanja. Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.39Viéndolo todo el pueblo cayeron sobre sus rostros y exclamaron: “¡Yahvé es Dios! ¡Yahvé es Dios!” And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”40Y Elías les dijo: “Prended a los profetas de Baal; que no se escape ni uno de ellos. Ellos los prendieron, y Elías los llevó al torrente Cisón, donde les quitó la vida. And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.41Entonces dijo Elías a Acab: “¡Sube, come y bebe, porque oigo ya gran ruido de lluvia!” And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”42Subió Acab, a comer y beber. Elías, empero, subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, e inclinándose hacia la tierra puso su rostro entre sus rodillas, Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.43y dijo a su criado: “Sube y mira hacia el mar.” Subió (el criado), miró y dijo: “No hay nada.” Dijo Elías: “Hazlo siete veces.” And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”44Y a la séptima vez dijo: “He aquí una nube, tan pequeña como la palma de la mano de un hombre, que se levanta del mar.” Entonces le dijo Elías: “Anda y di a Acab: «Unce y marcha, a fin de que no te ataje la lluvia».” And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’ ”45Y pasado un poco de tiempo se oscureció el cielo con nubes y viento, y cayó una gran lluvia; y Acab subió y marchó a Jesreel. And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.46Entonces la mano de Yahvé se posó sobre Elías, el cual se ciñó los lomos y corrió delante de Acab hasta llegar a Jesreel. And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
