1Después de esto el rey de Egipto juntó un ejército innumerable como las arenas de la orilla del mar, y gran número de naves; y trataba con perfidia de apoderarse del reino de Alejandro, y unirlo a su corona. And the king of Egypt gathered together an army, like the sand that is along the shore of the sea, and many ships. And he sought to obtain the kingdom of Alexander by deceit, and to add it to his own kingdom.2Entró en Siria aparentando amistad, y las ciudades le abrían las puertas, y le salían a recibir sus moradores; pues así lo había mandado Alejandro, por cuanto era su suegro. And he departed into Syria with words of peace, and they opened the cities to him, and they were meeting with him. For king Alexander had commanded them to go out to meet him, because he was his father-in-law.3Mas Ptolomeo así que entraba en una ciudad, ponía en ella guarnición militar. But when Ptolemy entered a city, he placed garrisons of soldiers in each of the cities.4Cuando llegó a Azoto, le mostraron el templo de Dagón que había sido abrasado, y las ruinas de esta ciudad y de sus arrabales, y los cadáveres tendidos en tierra, y los túmulos que habían hecho a lo largo del camino de los muertos en la batalla. And when he drew near to Azotus, they revealed to him that the temple of Dagon had been burned with fire, and Azotus and its suburbs had been demolished, and bodies had been abandoned, and that, for those who had been cut to pieces in the war, they had made a tomb along the way.5Y dijeron al rey que todo aquello lo había hecho Jonatás: con lo cual intentaban hacerle odiosa su persona; mas el rey no se dio por entendido. And they told the king that Jonathan had done these things, so as to make him hated. But the king remained silent.6Y salió Jonatás a recibir al rey con toda pompa en Jope, y se saludaron mutuamente, y pasaron allí la noche. And Jonathan went to meet the king at Joppa with glory, and they greeted one another, and they stayed there.7Fue Jonatás acompañando al rey hasta un río llamado Eleutero, desde donde regresó a Jerusalén. And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river, which is called Eleutherus. And he returned to Jerusalem.8Pero el rey Ptolomeo se apoderó de todas las ciudades que hay hasta Seleucia, situada en la costa del mar, y maquinaba traiciones contra Alejandro. But king Ptolemy obtained the dominion of the coastal cities, as far as Seleucia, and he devised evil plans against Alexander.9Y despachó embajadores a Demetrio para que le dijeran: “Ven, haremos alianza entre los dos, y yo te daré mi hija desposada con Alejandro, y tú recobrarás el reino de tu padre; And he sent ambassadors to Demetrius, saying: “Come, let us compose a pact between us, and I will give you my daughter, whom Alexander had, and you will reign in the kingdom of your father.10pues estoy arrepentido de haberle dado mi hija; porque ha conspirado contra mi vida”. For I regret that I have given him my daughter. For he has sought to kill me.”11Así le infamaba; porque codiciaba alzarse con su reino. And he slandered him, because he coveted his kingdom.12Al fin, habiéndole quitado la hija, se la dio a Demetrio, y se alejó de Alejandro, e hizo patente su malvada intención. And he took away his daughter, and he gave her to Demetrius, and he alienated himself from Alexander, and his hostilities were made manifest.13Entró después Ptolomeo en Antioquía, y ciñó su cabeza con dos diademas, la de Egipto y la de Asia. And Ptolemy entered Antioch, and he placed two diadems upon his head, that of Egypt, and that of Asia.14Hallábase a esta sazón el rey Alejandro en Cilicia, por habérsele rebelado la gente de aquellas provincias. Now king Alexander was in Cilicia at that time, because the people of those places were rebelling.15Pero así que supo lo ocurrido con el rey Ptolomeo, marchó contra él. Ordenó también este sus tropas, y salió a su encuentro con grandes fuerzas y le derrotó. And when Alexander heard of it, he came against him in warfare. And king Ptolemy led forth his army, and he met him with a strong hand, and he put him to flight.16Huyó Alejandro a Arabia para ponerse allí a cubierto; y se aumentó así el poder de Ptolomeo. And Alexander fled into Arabia, so as to be protected there. And king Ptolemy was exalted.17Y Zabdiel, de Arabia, cortó la cabeza de Alejandro, y se la envió a Ptolomeo. And Zabdiel the Arab took off the head of Alexander, and he sent it to Ptolemy.18De allí a tres días murió también el rey Ptolomeo; y las tropas que estaban en las fortalezas perdieron la vida a manos de las que estaban en el campamento. And king Ptolemy died on the third day, and those who were in the strongholds were destroyed by those who were in the camp.19Y entró Demetrio en posesión del reino el año ciento setenta y siete. And Demetrius reigned in the one hundred and sixty-seventh year.20Por aquellos días reunió Jonatás las milicias de Judea para apoderarse del alcázar de Jerusalén; a cuyo fin levantaron contra él muchas máquinas de guerra. In those days, Jonathan gathered together those who were in Judea, in order to fight against the stronghold that was in Jerusalem. And they made many machines of war against it.21Mas algunos hombres malvados, enemigos de su propia nación, fueron al rey Demetrio, y le dieron parte de que Jonatás tenía sitiado el alcázar. And so, certain men of iniquity, who hated their own people, went forth to king Demetrius, and they reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the stronghold.22Irritado al oír esto, pasó al instante a Tolemaida, y escribió a Jonatás que levantase el sitio del alcázar, y viniese al punto a verse con él. And when he heard it, he became angry. And immediately he came to Ptolemais, and he wrote to Jonathan that he should not besiege the stronghold, but that he should meet with him promptly, for a discussion.23Recibido que hubo Jonatás esta carta, mandó que se continuase el sitio; y escogiendo algunos de los ancianos de Israel, y de los sacerdotes, se expuso al peligro. But when Jonathan heard this, he ordered them to besiege it. And he chose some from the elders of Israel and from the priests, and he put himself in danger.24Llevó consigo oro y plata, ropas y varios otros regalos, y partió a presentarse al rey en Tolemaida, y se ganó su amistad. And he took gold, and silver, and vestments, and many other presents, and he went to the king at Ptolemais, and he found favor in his sight.25Sin embargo, algunos hombres perversos de su nación formaron acusaciones contra Jonatás; And some of the iniquitous from his nation came forward with objections against him.26mas el rey le trató como le habían tratado sus predecesores; y le honró en presencia de todos sus amigos, And the king treated him just as those who were before him had treated him. And he exalted him in the sight of all his friends.27y le confirmó en el Sumo Sacerdocio, y en todos los demás honores que de antemano tenía, y le trató como al primero de sus amigos. And he confirmed him in the high priesthood and in all the other honors that he held before, and he made him the leader of his friends.28Entonces Jonatás suplicó al rey que concediese franquicia de tributos a la Judea, a las tres toparquías, y a Samaria con todo su territorio, prometiendo darle trescientos talentos. And Jonathan requested of the king that he would make Judea free from tribute, along with the three districts, and Samaria, and its confines. And he promised him three hundred talents.29Otorgó el rey la petición, e hizo expedir el diploma para Jonatás, en estos términos: And the king consented. And he wrote letters to Jonathan about all these things, continuing in this way:30“El rey Demetrio a su hermano Jonatás, y a la nación judía, salud: “King Demetrius to his brother Jonathan, and to the nation of the Jews: greetings.31Os enviamos para conocimiento vuestro, copia de la carta que acerca de vosotros hemos escrito a Lastenes, nuestro padre, para que tengáis conocimiento de ello. We are sending you a copy of the letter that we wrote to Lasthenes, our parent, about you, so that you will know.32El rey Demetrio a Lastenes, su padre, salud: ‘King Demetrius to Lasthenes, his parent: greetings.33Hemos resuelto hacer mercedes a la nación de los judíos, los cuales son nuestros amigos, y se portan fielmente con nosotros, a causa de la buena voluntad que nos tienen. We have determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends and who keep to what is just with us, because of their good will, which they hold toward us.34Decretamos, pues, que toda la Judea, y las tres ciudades, Lida y Ramata, de la provincia de Samaria, agregadas a Judea, y todos sus territorios queden destinados para todos los sacerdotes de Jerusalén, en cambio de lo que el rey percibía antes de ellos todos los años, y por los frutos de la tierra y de los árboles. Therefore, we have assigned to them all the parts of Judea, and the three cities, Lydda and Ramatha, which were added to Judea from Samaria, and all their confines, to be set apart for all those sacrificing in Jerusalem, in place of that which the king previously received from them each year, and in place of the fruits of the land and of the fruit trees.35Asimismo les perdonamos desde ahora lo demás que nos pertenecía de diezmos y tributos, y los productos de las lagunas de la sal, y las coronas que se nos ofrecían. And, as for the rest of that which pertains to us from tithes and tributes, from this time forward, we release them from these, as well as from the drying areas of salt and the crowns that were presented to us.36Todo lo referido se lo concedemos, y todo irrevocablemente, desde ahora en adelante para siempre. All these, we concede to them, and nothing of these shall be revoked, from this time forward and for all time.37Ahora cuidad de que se saque una copia de este decreto, y entregádsela a Jonatás, para que se coloque en el monte santo en un paraje público.” Now, therefore, take care to make a copy of these things, and let it be given to Jonathan and set upon the holy mountain, in an honorable place.’ ”38Viendo luego el rey Demetrio que toda la tierra estaba tranquila, y le respetaba, sin que le quedase competidor ninguno licenció todo su ejército, enviando a cada cual a su casa, salvo las tropas extranjeras que había asalariado de las islas de las naciones; con lo cual se atrajo el odio de todas las tropas que habían servido a sus padres. And king Demetrius, seeing that the land was quieted in his sight and that nothing resisted him, sent all his forces away, each one to his own place, except the foreign army, which he had drawn together from the islands of the nations. And so all the troops of his fathers were hostile to him.39Había entonces un cierto Trifón que había sido antes del partido de Alejandro; y viendo que todo el ejército murmuraba de Demetrio, fue a verse con Emalcuel, árabe; el cual educaba a Antíoco, hijo de Alejandro; But there was a certain one, Trypho, who was previously on Alexander’s side. And he saw that all the army murmured against Demetrius, and so he went to Imalkue the Arab, who raised Antiochus, the son of Alexander.40y le hizo muchas y grandes instancias para que se le entregase, a fin de hacer que ocupase el trono de su padre. And he persuaded him to deliver him to him, so that he would reign in his father’s place. And he reported to him what Demetrius had done, and that his army was hostile to him. And he remained there for many days.41Entre tanto, Jonatás envió a pedir al rey Demetrio que mandase quitar la guarnición que había en el alcázar de Jerusalén y en las otras fortalezas; porque causaban daño a Israel. And Jonathan sent to king Demetrius, so that he would cast out those who were in the stronghold in Jerusalem and those who were with the garrisons, because they fought against Israel.42Y Demetrio respondió a Jonatás: “No solo haré esto por ti y por tu nación, sino que también te elevaré a mayor gloria a ti y a tu pueblo, luego que el tiempo me lo permita. And Demetrius sent to Jonathan, saying: “I will not only do this for you and your people, but I will elevate your glory and your nation, when opportunity shall serve.43Mas ahora me harás el favor de enviar tropas a mi socorro; porque todo mi ejército me ha abandonado. Now, therefore, you will do well if you send men as auxiliaries to me. For all my army has withdrawn from me.”44Entonces Jonatás le envió a Antioquía tres mil hombres de los más valientes, por cuya llegada recibió el rey grande contento. And Jonathan sent three thousand strong men to him at Antioch. And they came to the king, and the king was delighted at their arrival.45Pero los moradores de la ciudad, en número de ciento veinte mil hombres, se conjuraron, y querían matar al rey. And those who were of the city gathered together, one hundred and twenty thousand men, and they wanted to execute the king.46Se encerró este en su palacio, y apoderándose los de la ciudad de las calles, comenzaron a combatirle. And the king fled into the royal court. And those who were of the city, occupied the passageways of the city, and they began to fight.47Entonces el rey hizo venir en su socorro a los judíos, los cuales se reunieron todos junto a él; y acometiendo por varias partes a la ciudad, And the king called the Jews to his assistance. And they came together before him at the same time, and then they all dispersed themselves throughout the city.48mataron en aquel día cien mil hombres, y después de haberla saqueado en ese mismo día la pegaron fuego; y libertaron al rey. And they killed, in that day, one hundred thousand men, and they set fire to the city, and they seized many spoils in that day, and they freed the king.49Al ver los de la ciudad que los judíos se habían hecho dueños absolutos de ella, se aturdieron, y a gritos pidieron al rey misericordia, haciéndole esta súplica: And those who were of the city saw that the Jews had taken the city, just as they wanted, and they were weakened in their resolve, and they cried out to the king with supplication, saying,50“Concédenos la paz, y cesen los judíos de maltratarnos a nosotros y a la ciudad”. “Grant us a pledge, and let the Jews cease from assailing us and the city.”51Y rindieron las armas, e hicieron la paz. Con esto los judíos adquirieron grande gloria para con el rey y para con todos de su reino; y habiéndose hecho en el reino muy célebres, se volvieron a Jerusalén cargados de despojos. And they threw down their arms, and they made peace. And the Jews were glorified in the sight of the king and in the sight of all who were in his realm. And they became renowned in the kingdom, and they returned to Jerusalem, holding many spoils.52Quedó con esto Demetrio asegurado en el trono de su reino; y sosegado todo el país, era respetado de todos. And so king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom. And the land was quieted in his sight.53Mas, sin embargo, faltó a todo lo que había prometido. Se extrañó de Jonatás, y bien lejos de manifestarse reconocido a los servicios recibidos, le hacía todo el mal que podía. And he falsified everything whatsoever that he had said. And he alienated himself from Jonathan, and he did not repay him according to the benefits that he had received in tribute from him. But after this, Trypho returned, and with him was Antiochus, the adolescent boy, and he reigned, and he put a diadem on himself.55Acudieron a presentársele todas las tropas que Demetrio había licenciado; y pelearon contra Demetrio, el cual volvió las espaldas, y se puso en fuga. And there assembled before him all the troops, which Demetrius had dispersed, and they fought against him. And he turned his back and fled.56Se apoderó en seguida Trifón de los elefantes, y se hizo dueño de Antioquía. And Trypho took the elephants, and he obtained Antioch.57El jovencito Antíoco escribió a Jonatás en estos términos: “Te confirmo en el sacerdocio, y en el dominio de las cuatro ciudades, y quiero que seas uno de los amigos del rey”. And young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, saying: “I confirm you in the priesthood, and I appoint you over the four cities, so as to be among the king’s friends.”58Le envió también varias alhajas de oro para su servicio y le concedió facultad de poder beber en copa de oro, vestirse de púrpura, y de llevar la hebilla de oro. And he sent him vessels of gold for his ministry, and he gave him the authority to drink from gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to have a golden clasp.59Al mismo tiempo nombró a su hermano Simón gobernador desde los confines de Tiro hasta las fronteras de Egipto. And he appointed his brother Simon as governor, from the borders of Tyre, all the way to the borders of Egypt.60Salió luego Jonatás, y recorrió las ciudades de la otra parte del río; y todo el ejército de Siria acudió en su auxilio; con lo que se encaminó hacia Ascalón, cuyos moradores salieron a recibirle con grandes festejos. Then Jonathan went out, and he passed through the cities across the river. And all the armies of Syria were gathered together in assistance to him, and he came to Askalon, and those from the city met him honorably.61Desde allí pasó a Gaza, y sus habitantes le cerraron las puertas; por lo que le puso sitio, y quemó todos los alrededores de la ciudad, después de haberlo todo saqueado. And he went from there to Gaza. And those who were in Gaza closed themselves in. And so he besieged it, and he burned all that was around the city, and he plundered it.62Entonces los de Gaza pidieron capitulación a Jonatás, el cual se la concedió; y tomando en rehenes a sus hijos, los envió a Jerusalén, y recorrió en seguida todo el país hasta Damasco. And those of Gaza petitioned Jonathan, and he pledged to them with his right hand, and he accepted their sons as hostages and sent them to Jerusalem. And he traveled through the country, as far as Damascus.63A esta sazón supo Jonatás que los generales de Demetrio habían ido con un poderoso ejército a Cades, situada en Galilea, para sublevarla; con el fin de impedirle que se mezclase en adelante en los negocios del reino. And Jonathan heard that the leaders of Demetrius were acting treacherously at Kadesh, which is in Galilee, with a great army, intending to remove him from the affairs of the kingdom.64Y marchó contra ellos, dejando en la provincia a su hermano Simón. And he went to meet them. But he left his brother Simon behind in the countryside.65Entretanto este aproximándose a Betsura, la tuvo sitiada muchos días, teniendo encerrados a sus habitantes; And Simon took a position against Bethzur, and he assailed it for many days, and he closed them in.66quienes pidieron al fin la paz, y se la concedió, y habiéndoles hecho desocupar la plaza, tomó posesión de ella y la guarneció. And they asked him to accept a pledge, and he granted this to them. And he cast them out of there, and he seized the city, and he placed a garrison in it.67Jonatás se acercó con su ejército al lago de Genesar, y antes de amanecer llegaron a la llanura de Asor. And Jonathan and his camp took a position by the water of Gennesaret, and, before first light, they were standing watch in the plains of Hazor.68Y he aquí que se encontró en la llanura delante del campamento de los extranjeros; quienes le habían puesto una emboscada en los montes, y él fue a embestirlos de frente; And behold, an army of foreigners met him in the plains. And they set up an ambush against him in the mountains. But he met them from the opposite direction.69pero entonces los que estaban emboscados salieron de sus puestos, y cargaron sobre él. Yet those lying in ambush then rose up from their places and joined them in combat.70Con esto los de Jonatás echaron todos a huir, sin que quedase uno siquiera, excepto Matatías, hijo de Absolomi, y Judas, hijo de Calfi, comandante de su ejército. And all those who were from Jonathan’s side fled, and not one of them was left, except Mattathias, the son of Absalom, and Judas, the son of Chalphi, the leader of military training.71Entonces Jonatás rasgó sus vestidos, se echó polvo sobre su cabeza e hizo oración. And so Jonathan tore his garments, and he placed dirt on his head, and he prayed.72En seguida volvió Jonatás sobre los enemigos, y peleó contra ellos y los puso en fuga. And Jonathan turned back toward them in battle, and he put them to flight, and they fought.73Viendo esto las tropas que le habían abandonado, volvieron a unirse a él, y todos juntos persiguieron a los enemigos hasta Cades, donde tenían estos sus reales, al pie de los cuales llegaron. And when those from his side, who had fled, saw this, they returned to him, and with him they all pursued them, even to Kadesh, to their camp, and they even passed beyond there.74Murieron en aquel día tres mil hombres del ejército de los extranjeros; y Jonatás se volvió a Jerusalén. And there fell from the foreigners on that day three thousand men. And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
