1Tuvo Simón aviso de que había juntado Trifón un grande ejército para venir a asolar la tierra de Judá. And Simon heard that Trypho had gathered together an immense army to come to the land of Judah and to lay waste to it.2Y observando que la gente estaba intimidada y temblando, subió a Jerusalén y convocó al pueblo; Seeing that the people were fearful and trembling, he went up to Jerusalem, and he gathered together the people.3y para animarlos a todos, les habló de esta manera: “Ya sabéis cuánto hemos trabajado, así yo, como mis hermanos, y la casa de mi padre por defender la Ley y el Santuario, y en qué angustias nos hemos visto. And exhorting them, he said: “You know what great battles I, and my brothers, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws and for the holy places, and the anguish that we have seen.4Por amor de estas cosas han perdido la vida todos mis hermanos, para salvar a Israel, siendo yo el único de ellos que he quedado. As a result of these things, all my brothers have perished for the sake of Israel, and I have been left alone.5Mas no permita Dios que tenga ningún miramiento a mi vida, mientras estemos en la aflicción; pues no soy yo de más valer que mis hermanos. And now, it is not necessary for me to spare my life in any time of tribulation. For I am not better than my brothers.6Defenderé a mi nación y al Santuario, y a nuestros hijos, y a nuestras esposas; porque todas las naciones, por el odio que nos tienen, se han coligado para destruirnos”. And so, I will vindicate my people and the sanctuary, and likewise our children and wives. For all the Gentiles have gathered together to crush us, solely out of malice.”7Se inflamó el espíritu del pueblo así que oyó estas palabras, And the spirit of the people was immediately enkindled, when they heard these words.8y en alta voz respondieron: “Tú eres nuestro caudillo en lugar de Judas y Jonatás tus hermanos; And they responded with a loud voice, saying: “You are our leader in place of Judas and of Jonathan, your brother.9dirige nuestra guerra, que nosotros haremos todo cuanto nos mandares”. Fight our battles, and we will do whatever you tell us to do.”10Con esto Simón hizo juntar todos los hombres de guerra, y se dio prisa a reedificar las murallas de Jerusalén, y la fortaleció por todos lados. And so, gathering together all the men of war, he accelerated the completion of all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it all around.11Y envió a Jonatás hijo de Absalomi, con un nuevo ejército contra Jope, y habiendo este arrojado a los de dentro de la ciudad, se quedó en ella. And he sent Jonathan, the son of Absalom, and with him a new army, into Joppa, and he cast out those who were in it, and he himself remained there.12Entretanto, Trifón partió de Tolemaida con un numeroso ejército para entrar en tierra de Judá, trayendo consigo prisionero a Jonatás. And Trypho moved from Ptolemais, with a great army, to come into the land of Judah, and Jonathan was with him in custody.13Simón acampó cerca de Addus, enfrente de la llanura. And now, send a hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, so that when he is dismissed, he may not flee from us. And then we will release him.”17Bien conoció Simón que le hablaba con doblez; pero con todo mandó que se le entregase el dinero y los niños, por no atraer sobre sí el odio del pueblo de Israel, el cual hubiera dicho: And Simon knew that he was speaking deceitfully to him. Yet he ordered the money and the boys to be given, lest he should bring upon himself a great hostility from the people of Israel, who might have said,18“Por no haberse enviado el dinero y los niños, por eso ha perecido. “It is because he did not send the money and the boys that he perished.”19Así envió los niños y los cien talentos; pero Trifón faltó a la palabra y no puso en libertad a Jonatás. So he sent the boys and one hundred talents. And he was lying and did not dismiss Jonathan.20Y entró después Trifón en el país para devastarlo, y dio la vuelta por el camino que va a Ador; y Simón con sus tropas les seguía siempre los pasos a donde quiera que iban. And after this, Trypho came into the country, to crush it. And they circled around by the way that leads to Adora. And Simon and his camp marched into every place, wherever they went.21A este tiempo los que estaban en el alcázar enviaron a decir a Trifón que se apresurase a venir por el camino del desierto, y les enviase víveres. But those who were in the stronghold sent messengers to Trypho, so that he would hurry to come through the desert, and to send them provisions.22En vista de lo cual dispuso Trifón toda su caballería para partir aquella misma noche; mas por haber gran copia de nieve, no se verificó su ida al territorio de Galaad. And Trypho prepared all his horsemen to arrive on that night. But there was a very great snowfall, and he did not come into Gilead.23Al llegar cerca de Bascamán, hizo matar allí a Jonatás y a sus hijos. And when he approached toward Baskama, he killed Jonathan and his sons there.24Luego volvió Trifón atrás, y regresó a su país. And Trypho turned back and went into his own land.25Entonces Simón envió a buscar los huesos de su hermano Jonatás, y los sepultó en Modín, patria de sus padres; And Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan, his brother, and he buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.26y todo Israel hizo gran duelo en su muerte, y le lloró por espacio de muchos días. And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation. And they mourned him for many days.27Mandó después Simón levantar sobre los sepulcros de su padre y hermanos un elevado monumento, que se descubría desde lejos, de piedras labradas por uno y otro lado, And Simon built, over the sepulcher of his father and of his brothers, a building, lofty to see, of polished stone, front and back.28y allí levantó siete pirámides una enfrente de otra, a su padre y a su madre, y a sus cuatro hermanos. And he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brothers.29Alrededor de ellas colocó grandes columnas, y sobre las columnas armas para eterna memoria, y junto a las armas unos navíos de escultura, los cuales se viesen de cuantos navegasen por el mar. And around these he placed great columns; and upon the columns, weapons, as a continual memorial; and beside the weapons, carvings of ships, which might be seen by all those who sail the sea.30Tal es el sepulcro que levantó Simón en Modín, el cual subsiste hasta el día de hoy. This is the sepulcher that he made in Modin, even to this day.31Pero Trifón, yendo de camino con el jovencito rey Antíoco, hizo quitar a este la vida a traición; But Trypho, when he was on a journey with the young king, Antiochus, killed him by deceit.32y reinó en su lugar, ciñendo su cabeza con la diadema de Asia; e hizo grandes estragos en el país. And he reigned in his place, and he put on the diadem of Asia, and he caused great scourges upon the land.33Entretanto, Simón reparó las plazas de armas de Judea, reforzándolas con altas torres, elevados muros, puertas y cerrojos, y surtiéndolas de víveres. And Simon built up the strongholds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates and bars. And he placed provisions in the fortresses.34Envió también Simón comisionados al rey Demetrio para suplicarle que concediera la exención al país; porque todo cuanto había hecho Trifón no había sido más que un puro latrocinio. And Simon chose men, and he sent to king Demetrius, so that he would grant a remission to the region, for all that Trypho did was to carry out plundering.35Contestó el rey Demetrio a esta solicitud, y le escribió la siguiente carta: And king Demetrius responded to this word, and he wrote a letter in this manner:36“El rey Demetrio a Simón, Sumo Sacerdote y amigo de los reyes, y a los ancianos y al pueblo de los judíos, salud: “King Demetrius to Simon, the high priest and friend of kings, and to the elders, and to the people of the Jews: greetings.37Hemos recibido la corona de oro y el ramo que nos habéis enviado; y estamos dispuestos a hacer con vosotros una paz sólida, y a escribir a los intendentes del rey que os perdonen los tributos de que os hemos hecho gracia; The golden crown and the bahem that you sent, we have received. And we are prepared to make a great peace with you, and to write to the officers of the king to remit to you the things that we have released.38en la inteligencia de que debe permanecer firme todo cuanto hemos dispuesto a favor vuestro. Las plazas que habéis fortificado quedarán por vosotros. For whatever we have established remains in force for you. The strongholds that you have built, let them be yours.39Os perdonamos también las faltas y yerros que hayáis podido cometer hasta el día de hoy, como igualmente la corona de que erais deudores, y queremos que si se pagaba algún otro tributo en Jerusalén, no se pague ya más en adelante. Likewise, any oversight or fault, even to this day, we forgive it, along with the crown that you owed. And if anything else was taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed.40Finalmente, si se hallan entre vosotros algunos que sean a propósito para ser aliados entre los nuestros, alístense, y reine la paz entre nosotros.” And if any of you is fit to be enrolled among our own, let them be enrolled. And let there be peace between us.”41Con esto, en el año ciento sesenta quedó libre Israel del yugo de los gentiles. In the one hundred and seventieth year, the yoke of the Gentiles was taken away from Israel.42Y comenzó el pueblo de Israel a datar sus monumentos y registros públicos desde el año primero de Simón, Sumo Sacerdote, gran caudillo y príncipe de los judíos. And the people of Israel began to write in the tablets and the public records, in the first year under Simon: high priest, great commander, and leader of the Jews.43Por aquellos días pasó Simón a Gaza; y cercándola con su ejército, levantó máquinas de guerra, las arrimó, a sus muros, y batió una torre, y se apoderó de ella. In those days, Simon took up a position at Gaza, and he encamped around it, and he made machines of war, and he applied them to the city, and he struck one tower and captured it.44Y los soldados que estaban en una de estas máquinas entraron de golpe en la ciudad, excitando con esto un gran alboroto en ella. And those who were within the machine broke forth into the city. And a great commotion occurred in the city.45Entonces los ciudadanos subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos, rasgados sus vestidos, y a gritos clamaban a Simón, pidiendo que les concediese la paz, And those who were in the city ascended upon the wall, with their wives and children, having torn their tunics. And they cried out with a loud voice, asking Simon to grant them a pledge.46y diciéndole: “No nos trates como merece nuestra maldad, sino según tu grande clemencia”. And they said, “Do not repay us according to our malice, but according to your mercy.”47En efecto, movido Simón a compasión, no los trató con el rigor de la guerra; pero los echó de la ciudad, y purificó los edificios en que había habido ídolos, y luego entró en ella entonando himnos en alabanza del Señor. And weeping, Simon did not destroy them. Yet he cast them out of the city, and he cleansed the buildings, in which there had been idols. And then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.48Arrojadas después de la ciudad todas las inmundicias, la hizo, habitar por gente que observase la Ley, y la fortificó, e hizo en ella para sí una casa. And, having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men who would observe the law. And he fortified it and made it his dwelling place.49A esta sazón los que ocupaban el alcázar de Jerusalén no pudiendo entrar ni salir por el país, ni comprar, ni vender, se vieron reducidos a una grande escasez, de suerte que perecían muchos de hambre. But those who were in the stronghold of Jerusalem were prohibited from going out and entering the region, and from buying and selling. And they were very hungry, and many of them perished through famine.50Entonces clamaron a Simón pidiéndole capitulación, y se la otorgó; y los arrojó de allí, y purificó el alcázar de las inmundicias. And they cried out to Simon, that they might receive a pledge, and he granted it to them. And he cast them out of there, and he cleansed the stronghold from contaminations.51Entraron en él el día veintitrés del segundo mes, del año ciento setenta y uno, llevando ramos de palma, y cantando alabanzas, al son de arpas, de címbalos, y de liras, y entonando himnos y cánticos, por haber exterminado de Israel un gran enemigo. And they entered into it on the twenty-third day of the second month, in the one hundred and seventy-first year, with thanksgiving, and palm branches, and lyres, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because a great enemy had been crushed out of Israel.52Y Simón ordenó que todos los años se solemnizasen aquellos días con regocijos. And he established that these days should be kept every year with rejoicing.53Asimismo fortificó el monte del Templo, que está junto al alcázar y habitó allí con sus gentes. And he fortified the mountain of the temple, which was near the stronghold, and he lived there himself, along with those who were with him.54Finalmente, viendo Simón que su hijo Juan era un guerrero muy valiente le hizo general de todas las tropas; el cual tenía fija en Gazara su residencia. And Simon saw that John, his son, was a valiant man in battle. And so he appointed him as commander of all the forces. And he lived in Gazara.
