1Desde las islas del mar escribió el rey Antíoco, hijo de Demetrio, una carta a Simón, Sumo Sacerdote y príncipe del pueblo de los judíos, y a toda la nación; And king Antiochus, the son of Demetrius, sent letters from the islands of the sea to Simon, the priest and leader of the nation of the Jews, and to all the people.2cuyo tenor es el que sigue: “El rey Antíoco a Simón, Sumo Sacerdote, y a la nación de los judíos, salud. And these continued in this way: “King Antiochus to Simon, the great priest, and to the people of the Jews: greetings.3Habiéndose hecho dueños del reino de nuestros padres algunos hombres malvados, tengo resuelto libertarlo y restablecerlo en el estado que antes tenía, para cuyo fin he levantado un ejército numeroso y escogido, y he hecho construir naves de guerra. Since certain pestilent persons have obtained the kingdom of our fathers, it is my will, then, to vindicate the kingdom and to restore it, just as it was before. And so, I have chosen a great army, and I have built ships of war.4Quiero, pues, entrar en esas regiones, para castigar a los que han destruido mis provincias y asolado muchas ciudades de mi reino. Furthermore, I intend to pass through the region, so that I may take revenge on those who have corrupted our country and who have desolated many cities in my kingdom.5Pero a ti desde ahora te confirmo todas las exenciones de tributos que te concedieron todos los reyes que me han precedido, y todas las demás donaciones que te hicieron. Now, therefore, I confirm to you all the oblations that all the kings before me have remitted to you, and whatever other gifts they remitted to you.6Te doy permiso para que puedas acuñar moneda propia en tu país; And I permit you to make a striking of your own coins for your country.7y quiero que Jerusalén sea santa y libre, y que todas las armas que has fabricado, como también las plazas fuertes que has construido, y están en tu poder, queden para ti. Moreover, let Jerusalem be holy and free. And all the weapons that have been made, and the fortresses that you have constructed, or that you hold, let them remain with you.8Te perdono desde ahora todas las deudas y regalías debidas al rey y a la real hacienda, tanto por lo pasado como por lo venidero. And all that is owed to the king, and what should belong to the king in the future, from this time and for all time, is remitted to you.9Y luego que entremos en la posesión de nuestro reino, te colmaremos de tanta gloria a ti y a tu pueblo, y al Templo, que resplandecerá por todo el orbe.” Yet, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will glorify you, and your nation, and the temple with great glory, so much so that your glory shall be made manifest in all the earth.”10El año ciento setenta y cuatro, entró Antíoco en el país de sus padres, y al punto acudieron a presentársele todas las tropas, de suerte que quedaron poquísimos con Trifón. In the one hundred and seventy-fourth year, Antiochus went into the land of his fathers, and all the armies came over to him, so that few were left with Trypho.11Luego el rey Antíoco le persiguió; pero huyendo Trifón por la costa del mar, llegó a Dora. And king Antiochus followed him as he fled along the sea coast and came to Dora.12Pues veía los desastres que sobre él iban a llover, habiéndole abandonado el ejército. For he knew that evils had gathered together upon him, and that his troops had forsaken him.13Entonces Antíoco fue contra Dora con ciento veinte mil hombres aguerridos, y ocho mil caballos; And Antiochus took up a position above Dora, with one hundred and twenty thousand men of warfare and eight thousand horsemen.14y puso sitio a la ciudad, haciendo que los navíos la bloqueasen por la parte del mar; con lo que estrechaba la ciudad por mar y por tierra, sin permitir que nadie entrase ni saliese. And he encircled the city, and the ships drew near by sea. And they assailed the city by land and by sea, and they permitted no one to go in or out.15A esta sazón llegaron de la ciudad de Roma, Numenio y sus compañeros, con cartas escritas a los reyes y a las naciones, del tenor siguiente: But Numenius, and those who had been with him, came from the city of Rome, having letters written to the kings and the regions, in which was contained these things:16“Lucio, cónsul de los romanos, al rey Ptolomeo, salud. “Lucius, consul of the Romans, to king Ptolemy: greetings.17Han venido a nosotros embajadores de los judíos, nuestros amigos, enviados por Simón, príncipe de los sacerdotes, y por el pueblo judío con el fin de renovar la antigua amistad y alianza; The ambassadors of the Jews, our friends, came to us, to renew the former friendship and alliance, having been sent from Simon, the leader of the priests and the people of the Jews.18y nos han traído al mismo tiempo un escudo de oro de mil minas. And they also brought a shield of gold of over a thousand pounds.19A consecuencia de esto hemos tenido a bien escribir a los reyes y a los pueblos que no les causen ningún daño ni les muevan guerra a ellos, ni a sus ciudades y territorios, ni auxilien tampoco a los que se la hagan. And so, it was pleasing to us to write to the kings and the regions, that they should do no harm to them, nor fight against them, and their cities, and their regions, and that they should bear no assistance to those fighting against them.20Y nos ha parecido bien aceptar el escudo que nos han traído. And it seemed good to us to receive the shield from them.21Por lo tanto, si hay algunos hombres malvados que, fugitivos de su propio país, se hayan refugiado entre vosotros, entregádselos a Simón, príncipe de los sacerdotes, para que los castigue según su ley.” If, therefore, those who are pestilent have taken refuge with you from their region, hand them over to Simon, the leader of the priests, so that he may give a verdict to them according to their law.”22Esto mismo escribieron al rey Demetrio, y a Atalo, y a Ariarates, y a Arsaces; These same things were written to king Demetrius, and to Attalus, and to Ariarathes, and to Arsaces,23como también a todos los pueblos, a saber, a los de Lámpsaco, y a los de Lacedemonia, y a los de Delos, y de Mindos, y de Sición, y a los de la Caria, y de Samos, y de la Panfilia, a los de Licia, y de Alicarnaso, de Coo, y de Siden, y de Aradón, y de Rodas, y de Fasélides, y de Gortina, y de Gnido, y de Chipre, y de Cirene. and to all the regions, and to Lampsacus and to the Spartans, and to Delos, and Myndos, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Rhodes, and Phaselis, and Gortyna, and Gnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.24Y de estas cartas, enviaron los romanos una copia a Simón, príncipe de los sacerdotes, y al pueblo de los judíos. Moreover, they wrote a copy of these things to Simon, the leader of the priests and the people of the Jews.25A este tiempo el rey Antíoco puso por segunda vez sitio a Dora, combatiéndola sin cesar, y levantando máquinas de guerra contra ella; y encerró dentro a Trifón, de tal suerte que no podía escapar. But king Antiochus positioned his camp near Dora a second time, moving his hand against it continually, and making machines of war. And he enclosed Trypho, lest he escape.26Simón envió para auxiliarle dos mil hombres escogidos, y plata, y oro, y muchas alhajas; And Simon sent two thousand chosen men to him as auxiliaries, and silver, and gold, and an abundance of equipment.27mas aquel no quiso aceptar nada; antes bien, rompió todos los tratados hechos con él anteriormente, y se le mostró contrario. And he was not willing to receive them, but he broke all of the pact that he made with him before, and he alienated himself from him.28Envió a Atenobio, uno de sus amigos, para tratar con Simón, y decirle de su parte: “Vosotros estáis apoderados de Jope y de Gazara, y del alcázar de Jerusalén, que son ciudades pertenecientes a mi reino. And he sent to him Athenobius, one of his friends, to deal with him, saying: “You hold Joppa and Gazara, and the stronghold that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my kingdom.29Habéis asolado sus términos, y causado grandes daños al país, y os habéis alzado con el dominio de muchos lugares de mi reino. You have desolated their parts, and you have caused a great scourging in the land, and you have become ruler throughout many places in my kingdom.30Así que, o entregadme las ciudades que ocupasteis, y los tributos exigidos en los lugares de que os hicisteis dueños fuera de los límites de Judea; Now, therefore, hand over the cities that you occupy, and the tributes of the places where you have become ruler beyond the borders of Judea.31o si no, pagad quinientos talentos de plata por aquellas ciudades, y otros quinientos por los estragos que habéis hecho, y por los tributos de las ciudades; pues de lo contrario iremos y os haremos guerra”. But if not, give me for them five hundred talents of silver, and for the destruction that you have caused, and for the tributes of the cities, another five hundred talents. But if not, we will come and fight against you.”32Llegó Atenobio, amigo del rey, a Jerusalén, y viendo la magnificencia de Simón, y el oro y plata que brillaba por todas partes, y el grande aparato de su casa, se sorprendió sobremanera. Le dijo luego las palabras que el rey le había mandado. So Athenobius, the friend of the king, came to Jerusalem and saw the glory of Simon, and his splendor in gold and silver, and his abundance of equipment, and he was astonished. And he repeated the words of the king to him.33Simón respondió en estos términos: “Nosotros, ni hemos usurpado el territorio ajeno, ni retenemos nada que no sea nuestro; solo, sí, hemos tomado lo que es herencia de nuestros padres, y que nuestros enemigos poseyeron injustamente por algún tiempo. And Simon responded to him, and he said to him: “We have not taken foreign land, nor do we hold anything foreign, but we hold the inheritance of our fathers, which was for some time unjustly possessed by our enemies.34Y habiéndonos aprovechado de la ocasión, nos hemos vuelto a poner en posesión de la herencia de nuestros padres. In truth, since we have the opportunity, we claim the inheritance of our fathers.35Por lo que mira a las quejas que nos das tocante a Jope y Gazara, los de estas ciudades causaban grandes daños al pueblo y a todo nuestro país; estamos prontos a dar por ellas cien talentos. A lo que Atenobio no respondió palabra. And as to Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, they brought a great scourging on the people and our country. For these, we will give one hundred talents.” And Athenobius did not respond a word to him.36Pero volviéndose irritado a su rey, le dio parte de esta respuesta, y de la magnificencia de Simón, y de todo cuanto había visto; y se indignó el rey sobremanera. But, returning with anger to the king, he reported to him these words, and the glory of Simon, and all that he had seen. And the king became angry with a great anger.37En este intermedio Trifón se escapó en una nave a Ortosiada. But Trypho fled by ship to Orthosia.38Y el rey dio el gobierno de la costa marítima a Cendebeo; y entregándole un ejército compuesto de infantería y caballería, And the king appointed Cendebeus as commander of the seacoast, and he gave him an army of foot soldiers and horsemen.39le mandó marchar contra Judea, ordenándole que reedificase a Gedor, y reforzase las puertas de la ciudad, y que domase el pueblo. Entretanto el rey perseguía a Trifón. And he commanded him to move with his camp against the face of Judea. And he commanded him to build up Kedron, and to barricade the gates of the city, and to make war against the people. But the king pursued Trypho.40En efecto, Cendebeo llegó a Jamnia, y comenzó a vejar al pueblo, a talar la Judea, a prender y matar gente, y a fortificar a Gedor, And Cendebeus passed through to Jamnia, and he began to provoke the populace, and to trample Judea, and to take the people captive, and to execute, and to build up Kedron.41en la cual puso caballería e infantería para que hiciese desde allí correrías por Judea, según se lo mandó el rey. And he stationed horsemen and an army there, so that they could go out and travel through the ways of Judea, as the king appointed him to do.
