1 Macabeos 16
1Habiendo Juan subido de Gazara, y enterado a su padre Simón de los daños que causaba Cendebeo en el pueblo; And so, John came up from Gazara, and he reported to Simon, his father, what Cendebeus had done against their people.2llamó Simón a sus dos hijos mayores, Judas y Juan, y les dijo: “Yo y mis hermanos, y la casa de mi padre hemos vencido a los enemigos de Israel desde nuestra juventud hasta este día, y hemos tenido la dicha de libertar muchas veces a Israel. And Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and he said to them: “I and my brothers, and my father’s house, have fought against the enemies of Israel from our youth, even to this day. And this work has prospered in our hands, so that we have delivered Israel several times.3Mas ahora yo ya soy viejo; y así entrad vosotros en mi lugar y en el de mis hermanos, y salid a pelear por nuestra nación; y el auxilio del cielo sea con vosotros.” And now that I am old, you must act in place of me and my brothers, and go out to fight for our nation. Truly, may the help of heaven be with you.”4En seguida escogió del país veinte mil hombres aguerridos de tropa de infantería y caballería, los cuales marcharon contra Cendebeo, y durmieron en Modín; Then he chose from the region twenty thousand men of warfare, and horsemen; and they started out toward Cendebeus. And they rested in Modin.5de donde partieron al rayar el día, y avanzando por la llanura descubrieron un numeroso ejército de infantería y de caballería, que venía contra ellos, mediando un impetuoso torrente entre ambos ejércitos. And they rose up in the morning and went out into the plains. And behold, an abundant army of foot soldiers and horsemen was there to meet them, and there was a river flowing between them.6Entonces Juan hizo avanzar sus tropas para acometer; mas viendo que estas temían pasar el torrente, pasó él primero, y a su ejemplo le pasaron todos en seguida. And he and his people moved their camp opposite their face, and he saw the trepidation of the people to cross over the river, and so he crossed over first. And seeing him, the men also crossed after him.7Hecho esto dividió en dos partes su infantería, colocando en medio de ella la caballería, por ser muy numerosa la de los enemigos. And he divided the people and the horsemen into the midst of the foot soldiers. But the horsemen of the adversary were exceedingly numerous.8E hicieron resonar las trompetas sagradas, y echó a huir Cendebeo con todas sus tropas; muchas de estas perecieron al filo de la espada, y las que escaparon con vida se refugiaron en la fortaleza. And they sounded the holy trumpets. And Cendebeus and his army were turned back. And many of them fell wounded. But the rest fled into the fortress.9En esta acción quedó herido Judas, hermano de Juan; pero Juan los fue persiguiendo hasta Cedrón, la que había sido reedificada. Then Judas, the brother of John, was wounded. But John pursued them, until he came to Kedron, which he had built.10Muchos llegaron hasta los castillos que había en las llanuras de Azoto; pero Juan les puso fuego, dejando muertos allí dos mil hombres, y regresó felizmente a Judea. And they fled all the way to the towers that were in the fields of Azotus, and he burnt them with fire. And there fell of them two thousand men, and he returned to Judea in peace.11A este tiempo Ptolomeo, hijo de Abobo, se encontraba de gobernador del llano de Jericó, y tenía mucho oro y plata; Now Ptolemy, the son of Abubus, was appointed commander over the plain of Jericho, and he held much silver and gold.12pues era yerno del Sumo Sacerdote. For he was the son-in-law of the high priest.13Se le hinchó de soberbia el corazón, y quería hacerse dueño del país; a cuyo fin maquinaba cómo quitar la vida por medio de alguna traición a Simón y a sus hijos. And his heart was exalted, and he wanted to obtain the region, and he devised treachery against Simon and his sons, so as to destroy them.14Hallábase este a la sazón recorriendo las ciudades de Judea, tomando providencias para su mayor bien, y bajó a Jericó con sus hijos, Matatías y Judas, en el undécimo mes, llamado Sabbat, del año ciento setenta y siete. Now when Simon was traveling through the cities that were in the region of Judea, and acting with concern for them, he went down to Jericho, he and Mattathias and Judas, his sons, in the one hundred and seventy-seventh year, in the eleventh month; this is the month of Shevat.15Les salió a recibir el hijo de Abobo con mal designio, en un pequeño castillo llamado Doc, que había él construido; donde les dio un gran convite, poniendo gente en asechanza. And the son of Abubus received them, with deceitfulness, into a little fortress, which is called Dok, that he had built. And he made them a great feast, and he hid men there.16Y cuando Simón y sus hijos hubieron tomado vino, se levantó Ptolomeo con los suyos, y tomando sus armas entraron en la sala del banquete, y asesinaron a Simón, y a sus dos hijos, y a algunos de sus criados; And when Simon and his sons became inebriated, Ptolemy and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and entered into the gathering. And they killed him, and his two sons, and some of his servants.17cometiendo una gran traición en Israel, y volviendo mal por bien. And he committed a great treachery in Israel, and he repaid good with evil.18Después Ptolomeo escribió todo esto al rey, rogándole que le enviase tropas en su socorro, prometiéndole entregar en su poder el país con todas sus ciudades y los tributos. And Ptolemy wrote about these things, and he sent to the king, so that he would send him an army to assist him, and he could deliver to him the region, and their cities and tributes.19Despachó asimismo otros a Gazara para que matasen a Juan; y escribió a los oficiales del ejército para que se viniesen a él, que les daría plata y oro y dones. And he sent others to Gazara to destroy John. And he sent letters to the tribunes to come to him, and he would give them silver, and gold, and gifts.20Envió otros para que se apoderasen de Jerusalén y del monte donde estaba el Templo. And he sent others to occupy Jerusalem and the mountain of the temple.21Pero se adelantó corriendo un hombre, el cual llegó a Gazara y contó a Juan cómo habían perecido su padre y hermanos, y como Ptolomeo había enviado gentes para quitarle a él también la vida. Now a certain one, running ahead, reported to John in Gazara, that his father and his brothers perished, and that “he sent to kill you also.”22Al oír tales cosas se turbó en gran manera Juan, pero luego se apoderó de los que venían para matarle; haciéndoles quitar la vida, puesto que supo que maquinaban contra la suya. But when he heard it, he was very afraid, and he apprehended the men who came to destroy him, and he killed them. For he knew that they sought to destroy him.23El resto de las acciones de Juan, y sus guerras, y las gloriosas empresas que llevó a cabo con singular valor, y la reedificación de los muros hecha por él, y lo demás que ejecutó; And the rest of the stories about John, and his wars, and the virtuous deeds that he performed with fortitude, and the building of the walls that he raised, and the things that he did,24todo se halla descrito en el diario de su pontificado desde el tiempo que fue hecho príncipe de los sacerdotes, después de su padre Simón. behold, these have been written in the book of the days of his priesthood, from the time that he became high priest, after his father.
