1 Macabeos 1

And there went forth from among them a sinful root, Antiochus the illustrious, the son of king Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome. And he reigned in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.12En aquel tiempo se dejaron ver unos inicuos israelitas, que persuadieron a otros muchos, diciéndoles: Vamos, y hagamos alianza con las naciones circunvecinas, porque después que nos separamos de ellas, hemos experimentado muchos desastres. In those days, there went forth from Israel sons of iniquity, and they persuaded many, saying: “Let us go and negotiate a covenant with the Gentiles that are all around us. For since we have withdrawn from them, many evils have found us.”13Les pareció bien este consejo. And some of the people determined to do this, and they went to the king. And he crushed them all.24Tomó asimismo la plata y el oro, y los vasos preciosos, y los tesoros escondidos que encontró. Every bridegroom took up lamentation, and those who sat in the marriage bed mourned.29Y se estremeció la tierra, como compadecida de sus habitantes; y toda la casa de Jacob quedó cubierta de oprobio. And the land shook on behalf of the inhabitants in it, and the entire house of Jacob was clothed with confusion.30Cumplidos que fueron dos años, envió el rey por las ciudades de Judá al superintendente de tributos, el cual llegó a Jerusalén con grande acompañamiento. And after two years of days, the king sent the prince of his tributes to the cities of Judah, and he came to Jerusalem with a great crowd.31Y habló a la gente con una fingida dulzura, y le creyeron. And he spoke peaceful words to them, in deceitfulness; and they believed him.32Pero de repente se arrojó sobre los ciudadanos, e hizo en ellas una gran carnicería, quitando la vida a muchísima gente del pueblo de Israel. And he rushed upon the city suddenly, and he struck it with a great scourging, and he destroyed many of the people of Israel.33Y saqueó la ciudad, y la entregó a las llamas, y derribó sus casas y los muros que la cercaban. And he took the spoils of the city, and he burned it with fire, and he destroyed its houses and the walls around it.34Y se llevaron cautivas las mujeres, y se apoderaron de sus hijos y de sus ganados. And they led away the women as captives, and they possessed the children and the cattle.35Fortificaron la ciudad de David, con una grande y firme muralla, y con fuertes torres, e hicieron de ella una fortaleza. And they stored up weapons and provisions. And they gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem,37teniéndolos allí como en custodia. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them, and the city became the dwelling place of outsiders, and she became a stranger to her own offspring, and her own children abandoned her.41Su Santuario quedó desolado como un yermo, convertidos en días de llanto sus días festivos, en oprobio sus sábados, y reducidos a nada sus honores. Her sanctuary was desolate, like a place of solitude, her feast days were turned into mourning, her Sabbaths into disgrace, her honors into nothing.42En fin, la grandeza de su ignominia igualó a la de su gloria, y su alta elevación se convirtió en llantos. And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people must be one, and that each one should relinquish his own law.44Todas las gentes se conformaron con este decreto del rey Antíoco, And all Gentiles consented, according to the word of king Antiochus.45y muchos del pueblo de Israel se sometieron a esta servidumbre, y sacrificaron a los ídolos, y violaron el sábado. And many out of Israel consented to his servitude, and they sacrificed to idols, and they polluted the Sabbath.46En efecto, el rey envió sus comisionados a Jerusalén, y por todas las ciudades de Judá, con cartas, para que abrazasen las leyes de las gentes de la tierra, And the king sent letters, by the hand of messengers, to Jerusalem and to all the cities of Judah: that they should follow the law of the Nations of the earth,47y se prohibiese ofrecer en el Templo de Dios holocaustos, sacrificios, y oblaciones por los pecados, and that they should prohibit holocausts and sacrifices and atonements to be made in the temple of God,48y se impidiese la celebración del sábado y de las solemnidades. and that they should prohibit the celebration of the Sabbath and the solemn days.49Mandó además que se profanasen los santos lugares y el pueblo santo de Israel. And he ordered the holy places to be defiled, along with the holy people of Israel.50Dispuso que se erigiesen altares y templos e ídolos, y que se sacrificasen carnes de cerdo y animales inmundos; And he ordered altars to be built, and temples, and idols, and he ordered the immolation of the flesh of swine and of unclean cattle,51que dejasen sin circuncidar a sus hijos, y que manchasen sus almas con toda suerte de viandas impuras y de abominaciones, a fin de que olvidasen la Ley de Dios, y traspasasen todos sus mandamientos; and that they should leave their sons uncircumcised, and defile their souls with all that is unclean, and with abominations, so that they would forget the law and would alter all the justifications of God,52y que todos los que no obedeciesen las órdenes del rey Antíoco perdiesen la vida. and that whoever would not act according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.53A este tenor escribió a todo su reino, y nombró comisionados que obligasen al pueblo a hacer todo esto; According to all these words, he wrote to all his kingdom. And he appointed leaders over the people, who would compel them to do these things.54los cuales mandaron a las ciudades de Judá que sacrificasen. And these ordered the cities of Judah to sacrifice.55Y muchos del pueblo se unieron con aquellos que habían abandonado la Ley del Señor, e hicieron mucho mal en el país; And many from the people, who had abandoned the law of the Lord, were gathered together by them. And they committed evils upon the land.56y obligaron al pueblo de Israel a huir a parajes extraviados, y a guarecerse en sitios ocultos. And all those who were found with the books of the testament of the Lord, and whoever observed the law of the Lord, they butchered, according to the edict of the king.61Con esta violencia trataban, una vez por mes, al pueblo de Israel que habitaba en las ciudades. By their power, they did these things to the people of Israel, as they were discovered in the cities, month after month.62Porque a los veinticinco días del mes, ofrecían ellos sacrificios sobre el altar, que estaba erigido enfrente del altar. And they were not willing to infringe upon the holy law of God, and they were butchered.67Terrible fue sobremanera la ira contra el pueblo. And there was a very great wrath upon the people.
