¹Así que las naciones circunvecinas oyeron que el altar y el Santuario habían sido reedificados como antes, se irritaron sobremanera; And it happened that, when the surrounding nations heard that the altar and the sanctuary had been rebuilt as before, they were very angry.²y resolvieron exterminar a los de la estirpe de Jacob que vivían entre ellos, y comenzaron a matar y perseguir a aquel pueblo. And they intended to destroy the people of Jacob that were among them, and they began to kill some of the people, and to persecute them.³Entretanto batía Judas a los hijos de Esaú en la Idumea, y a los que estaban en Acrabatane, porque tenían sitiados a los israelitas, e hizo en ellos un gran destrozo. Then Judas defeated in warfare the sons of Esau in Idumea, and those who were in Akrabattene, because they besieged the Israelites, and he struck them with a great scourging.⁴También se acordó de la malicia de los hijos de Beán, los cuales eran para el pueblo un lazo y tropiezo, armándole emboscadas en el camino. And he remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who were a snare and a scandal to the people, lying in ambush for them in the way.⁵Y los obligó a encerrarse en unas torres, donde los tuvo cercados; y habiéndolos anatematizado, pegó fuego a las torres y las quemó con cuantos había dentro. And they were trapped by him in the towers, and he took up a position near them, and he anathematized them, and he burned their towers with fire, along with all who were in them.⁶De allí pasó a los hijos de Ammón, donde encontró un fuerte y numeroso ejército, con Timoteo, su caudillo. Then he crossed over to the sons of Ammon, and he found a strong hand, and an abundant people, and Timothy was their commander.⁷Tuvo diferentes choques con ellos, y los derrotó, e hizo en ellos gran matanza. And he engaged in many battles with them, and they were crushed in their sight, and he struck them down.⁸Y tomó la ciudad de Gacer con los lugares dependientes de ella, y se volvió a Judea. And he seized the city of Jazer, and her sister cities, and he returned to Judea.⁹Los gentiles que habitaban en Galaad se reunieron para exterminar a los israelitas que vivían en su país; mas estos se refugiaron en la fortaleza de Datemán. And the Gentiles, who were in Gilead, gathered together against the Israelites, who were within their borders, to take them away, and so they fled into the fortress of Dathema.¹⁰Desde allí escribieron cartas a Judas y a sus hermanos, en las cuales decían: “Se han congregado las naciones circunvecinas para perdernos; And they sent letters to Judas and his brothers, saying: “The Gentiles all around have been gathering together against us to carry us away.¹¹y se preparan para venir a tomar la fortaleza donde nos hemos refugiado, siendo Timoteo, el caudillo de su ejército. And they are preparing to come and occupy the fortress into which we have fled. And Timothy is the commander of their army.¹²Ven luego, y líbranos de sus manos, porque han perecido ya muchos de los nuestros; Now, therefore, come and rescue us from their hands, for many of us have fallen.¹³y todos nuestros hermanos, que habitaban en los lugares de Tubín, han sido muertos, habiéndose llevado cautivas a sus mujeres e hijos, y saqueándolo todo, y dado muerte allí mismo a cerca de mil hombres.” And all our brothers, who were in the places of Tob, have been put to death. And they have led away as captives their wives, and their children, and their spoils. And while they were still reading these letters, behold, there arrived from Galilee other messengers, with torn garments, who announced according to these words:¹⁵Pues decían haberse coligado contra ellos los de Tolomaida, y los de Tiro y de Sidón, y que toda la Galilea estaba llena de extranjeros, con el fin de acabar con nosotros. saying that those of Ptolemais and Tyre and Sidon have assembled against them, “and all of Galilee has been filled with foreigners, in order to consume us.”¹⁶Luego que Judas y su gente oyeron tales noticias, tuvieron un gran consejo para deliberar qué era lo que harían a favor de aquellos hermanos suyos que se hallaban en la angustia, y eran estrechados por aquella gente. So then, when Judas and the people heard these words, a great assembly came together, to consider what they should do for their brothers who were in trouble and were being assailed by them.¹⁷Dijo Judas a su hermano Simón: “Escoge un cuerpo de tropas, y ve a librar a tus hermanos que están en Galilea, y yo y mi hermano Jonatás iremos a Galaad.” And Judas said to Simon his brother: “Choose men for yourself, and go, and free your brothers in Galilee. But I and my brother Jonathan, will go into the country of Gilead.”¹⁸Y dejó a José, hijo de Zacarías, y a Azarías por caudillos del pueblo, para guardar la Judea con el resto del ejército. And he left behind Joseph, son of Zachariah, and Azariah, as commanders of the people, with the remainder of the army, in Judea, to guard it.¹⁹Les dio esta orden: “Cuidad de esta gente, les dijo; y no salgáis a pelear contra los gentiles, hasta que volvamos nosotros.” And he instructed them, saying, “Take charge of this people, but do not go to war against the Gentiles, until we return.”²⁰Se dieron a Simón tres mil hombres para ir a Galilea, y Judas tomó ocho mil para pasar a Galaad. Now three thousand men were divided to Simon, to go into Galilee, but eight thousand were divided to Judas, to go into the land of Gilead.²¹Partió Simón para Galilea; y tuvo muchos encuentros con aquellas naciones, las que derrotó y fue persiguiendo hasta las puertas de Tolomaida; And Simon went into Galilee, and he engaged in many battles with the Gentiles, and the Gentiles were crushed before his face, and he pursued them even to the gates of Ptolemais.²²dejando muertos cerca de tres mil gentiles, y apoderándose del botín. And there fell of the Gentiles nearly three thousand men, and he took their spoils.²³Tomó después consigo a los que había en Galilea y en Arbates, como también a sus mujeres e hijos, y todo cuanto tenían, y los condujo a la Judea con grande regocijo. And he took with him those who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children, and all that was theirs, and he led them into Judea with great rejoicing.²⁴Entretanto Judas Macabeo, con su hermano Jonatás, pasaron el Jordán, y caminaron tres días por el desierto. And Judas Maccabeus, and Jonathan his brother, crossed over the Jordan, and they traveled three days’ journey through the desert.²⁵Y les salieron al encuentro los nabuteos, los cuales los recibieron pacíficamente, y les contaron lo que había acaecido a sus hermanos en Galaad; And the Nabateans met them, and they accepted them peacefully, and they described to them all that had happened to their brothers in the land of Gilead,²⁶y cómo muchos de ellos se habían encerrado en Barasa, en Bosor, en Alimas, en Casfor, en Maget, y Carnaim, todas ellas ciudades fuertes y grandes; and that many of them were trapped in Bozrah, and Bosor, and Alema, and in Chaspho, and Maked, and Carnaim. All these are large and fortified cities.²⁷y cómo quedaban también cercados los que habitaban en otras ciudades de Galaad, y que los enemigos querían arrimar al día siguiente su ejército a aquellas ciudades, y prenderlos, y acabar con ellos en un solo día. Moreover, they were held in their grasp in the other cities of Gilead, and they had arranged to move their army, on the next day, to these cities, and to seize them, and to destroy them all in one day.²⁸Con esto partió Judas inmediatamente con su ejército por el camino del desierto de Bosor, y se apoderó de la ciudad, y pasó a cuchillo a todos los varones, y después de saqueada la entregó a las llamas. Then Judas and his army unexpectedly turned their path into the desert, to Bosor, and they occupied the city. And he killed every male by the edge of the sword, and took all their spoils, and burned it with fire.²⁹Por la noche salieron de allí y se dirigieron a la fortaleza; And they arose from there by night, and they went forth all the way to the fortress.³⁰y al rayar el día, alzando los ojos vieron una tropa innumerable de gentes, que traían consigo escalas y máquinas para tomar la plaza, y destruir a los que estaban dentro. And it happened that, at first light, when they lifted up their eyes, behold, there was a multitude of people, which could not be numbered, bringing ladders and machines, in order to seize the fortress, and to assault them.³¹Luego que Judas vio que se había comenzado el ataque, y que el clamor de los combatientes subía hasta el cielo como trompeta, y la grande gritería en la ciudad, And Judas saw that the fight had begun, and the cry of the battle went up to heaven like a trumpet, and a great cry went out of the city.³²dijo a sus tropas: “Pelead en este día en defensa de vuestros hermanos”. And he said to his army, “Fight today on behalf of your brothers.”³³Y marcharon en tres columnas por las espaldas de los enemigos; tocaron las trompetas, y clamaron orando. And he came, with three companies behind them, and they sounded the trumpets, and they cried out in prayer.³⁴Entonces conocieron las tropas de Timoteo, que era el Macabeo el que venía, y huyeron su encuentro; sufriendo un gran destrozo, y habiendo perecido en aquel día al pie de ocho mil hombres. And the camp of Timothy knew that it was Maccabeus, and they took flight before his face. And they struck them with a great scourging. And there fell from them in that day nearly eight thousand men.³⁵De allí torció Judas el camino hacia Masfá, la batió y se apoderó de ella; pasó a cuchillo todos los varones, y después de haberla saqueado, la incendió. And Judas diverted to Mizpah, and he fought and seized it. And he killed all of its males, and he took its spoils, and he burned it with fire.³⁶Partiendo más adelante tomó, a Casbón, a Maget, a Bosor y a las demás ciudades de Galaad. From there, he continued on, and he seized Chaspho, and Maked, and Bosor, and the rest of the cities of Gilead.³⁷Después de estos sucesos juntó Timoteo otro ejército, y se acampó frente a Rafón, a la otra parte del arroyo. But after these events, Timothy gathered together another army, and he positioned his camp opposite Raphon, across the torrent.³⁸Judas envió luego a espiar al enemigo, y los emisarios le dijeron: “Todas las naciones que nos rodean se han juntado con Timoteo; es un ejército sumamente grande. And Judas sent men to catch sight of the army. Y Judas marchó contra ellos. And they have brought the Arabians as auxiliaries to them, and they have set up camp across the torrent, in preparation to come against you in battle.” And Judas went to meet them.⁴⁰Ahora bien, Timoteo había dicho a los capitanes de su ejército: “Cuando Judas con sus tropas llegare al arroyo y pasare él primero hacia nosotros, no le podremos resistir, y nos vencerá infaliblemente. And Timothy said to the leaders of his army: “When Judas and his army approach, close to the torrent of water, if he crosses over to us first, we will not be able to withstand him. For he will be able to prevail against us.⁴¹Pero si temiere pasar, y pusiere su campo en el otro lado del arroyo, pasémoslo nosotros, y lograremos victoria”. If, truly, he is afraid to cross over, and so he sets up camp across the river, we will cross over to them, and we will prevail against him.”⁴²En esto llegó Judas cerca del arroyo, y poniendo a los escribanos del ejército a lo largo de la orilla del agua, les dio esta orden: “No dejéis que se quede aquí nadie; sino que todos han de venir al combate”. But when Judas approached, close to the torrent of water, he stationed the scribes of the people near the torrent, and he commanded them, saying, “Permit no man to stay behind, but let all come into the battle.”⁴³Dicho esto pasó él el primero hacia los enemigos, y en pos de él toda la tropa, y así que llegaron, derrotaron a todos aquellos gentiles, los cuales arrojaron las armas, y huyeron al templo que había en Carnaim. And he crossed over to them first, and all the people after him. And all the Gentiles were crushed before their face, and they threw away their weapons, and they fled to the temple that was in Carnaim.⁴⁴Judas tomó la ciudad, pegó fuego al templo y le abrasó con cuantos había dentro; y Carnaim fue asolada, sin que pudiese resistir a Judas. And he occupied that city, and he burned the temple with fire, along with all the things that were in it. And Carnaim was subdued, and it could not stand against the face of Judas.⁴⁵Entonces reunió Judas todos los israelitas que se hallaban en el país de Galaad, desde el más chico hasta el más grande, con sus mujeres e hijos, formando de todos ellos un ejército numerosísimo para que viniesen a la tierra de Judá. And Judas gathered together all the Israelites who were in the land of Gilead, from the least even to the greatest, with their wives and children, and a very great army, to come into the land of Judah.⁴⁶Llegaron a Efrón, ciudad grande situada en la embocadura del país, y muy fuerte; y no era posible dejarla a un lado, echando a la derecha o a la izquierda, sino que era preciso atravesar por medio de ella. And they came as far as Ephron. And this was a great city, positioned at the entrance, strongly fortified, and there was no way to go around it on the right or on the left, but the path was through the midst of it.⁴⁷Mas sus habitantes se encerraron, y tapiaron las puertas con piedras. Judas les envió un mensajero de paz, And those who were in the city shut themselves in and barricaded the gates with stones. And so Judas sent to them with words of peace,⁴⁸diciéndoIes: “Es nuestro deseo pasar por vuestro país para ir a nuestras casas, y nadie os hará daño; no haremos más que pasar”. Then Judas instructed a proclamation to be made in the camp, that they would engage them, each one from the place where he was.⁵⁰En efecto, la atacaron los hombres más valientes, y se dio el asalto, que duró todo aquel día y aquella noche, cayendo al fin en sus manos la ciudad. And the men of the army drew close. And he assaulted that city all day and all night. And the city was delivered into his hand.⁵¹Pasaron a cuchillo a todos los varones, y arrasaron la ciudad hasta los cimientos, después de haberla saqueado, y atravesaron por toda ella, caminando por encima de los cadáveres. And they destroyed every male with the edge of the sword, and he eradicated the city, and he took its spoils, and he crossed through the entire city, over those who had been slain.⁵²En seguida pasaron el Jordán en la gran llanura que hay enfrente de Betsán. And Judas was gathering the stragglers and exhorting the people, throughout the entire way, until they came into the land of Judah.⁵⁴Y subieron al monte Sión con alegría y regocijo, y ofrecieron allí holocaustos en acción de gracias por el feliz regreso, sin que hubiese perecido ninguno de ellos. And they ascended to mount Zion with joy and gladness, and they offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen, until they had returned in peace.⁵⁵Pero mientras Judas y Jonatás estaban en el país de Galaad, y Simón, su hermano, en Galilea delante de Tolomaida, Now in the days that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee against the face of Ptolemais:⁵⁶José, hijo de Zacarías, y Azarías, comandante de las tropas, tuvieron noticia de estos felices sucesos, y de las batallas que se habían dado. Joseph, the son of Zachariah, and Azariah, the leader of the army, heard good things about the battles that were fought.⁵⁷Y dijo aquel: “Hagamos también nosotros célebre nuestro nombre, y vamos a pelear contra las naciones circunvecinas”. And he said, “Let us also make a name for ourselves, and let us go to fight against the Gentiles that are all around us.”⁵⁸Y dando la orden a las tropas de su ejército, marcharon contra Jamnia. And he gave orders to those who were in his army, and they went out towards Jamnia.⁵⁹Pero Gorgias salió con su gente fuera de la ciudad, para venir al encuentro de ellos y presentarles batalla. And Gorgias and his men exited the city, to meet them in the fight.⁶⁰Y fueron batidos José y Azarías, los cuales echaron a huir hasta las fronteras de Judea; pereciendo en aquel día hasta dos mil hombres del pueblo de Israel; habiendo sufrido el pueblo esta gran derrota, And Joseph and Azariah were forced to flee, even to the borders of Judea. And there fell on that day, from the people of Israel, up to two thousand men, and it was a great defeat for the people.⁶¹por no haber obedecido las órdenes de Judas y de sus hermanos, imaginándose que harían maravillas. For they did not listen to Judas and his brothers, supposing that they should act boldly.⁶²Mas ellos no eran de la estirpe de aquellos varones, por medio de los cuales había de ser salvado Israel. But these were not of the offspring of those men by whom salvation was brought to Israel.⁶³Por el contrario, las tropas de Judas se adquirieron gran reputación, tanto en todo Israel, como entre las naciones todas, adonde llegaba el eco de su fama. And the men of Judah were magnified greatly in the sight of all Israel and of all the nations where their name was heard.⁶⁴Y la gente les salía al encuentro con aclamaciones de júbilo. And the people gathered to them with favorable acclamations.⁶⁵Marchó después Judas con sus hermanos al país del mediodía a reducir a los hijos de Esaú, y se apoderó a la fuerza de Hebrón, y de sus aldeas, quemando sus muros y las torres que tenía alrededor. And so Judas and his brothers went out and assailed the sons of Esau, in the land that is toward the south, and he struck Hebron and her sister cities, and he burned its walls and the towers all around it with fire.⁶⁶De allí partió y se dirigió al país de las naciones extranjeras, y recorrió la Samaria. And he moved his camp to go into the land of the foreigners, and he traveled through Samaria.⁶⁷En aquel tiempo murieron peleando unos sacerdotes por querer hacer proezas, y haber entrado imprudentemente en el combate. In that day, some priests fell in battle. Since they desired to act boldly, they went out, without counsel, into the battle.⁶⁸Judas torció después hacia Azoto, país de los extranjeros, y derribó sus altares, quemó los simulacros de sus dioses, saqueó las ciudades, y con sus despojos se volvió a tierra de Judá. And Judas turned aside to Azotus, into the land of the foreigners, and he destroyed their altars, and he burned the statues of their gods with fire. And he seized the spoils of the cities, and he returned to the land of Judah.
