1Entretanto el rey Antíoco recorriendo las provincias superiores, oyó que había en Persia una ciudad llamada Elimaida, muy célebre y abundante de plata y oro, And king Antiochus was traveling through the upper regions, and he heard that the city of Elymais in Persia was very noble and abundant in silver and gold,2con un templo riquísimo, donde había velos con mucho oro, y corazas, y escudos que había dejado allí Alejandro, hijo de Filipo, rey de Macedonia, el que reinó primero en Grecia. and that the temple in it was very opulent, and that there were, in that place, coverings of gold, and breastplates and shields, which Alexander, the son of Philip, king of Macedonia, who reigned first in Greece, had left behind.3Y fue allá con el fin de apoderarse de la ciudad, y saquearla; pero no pudo salir con su intento, porque llegando a entender su designio los habitantes, So he came and sought to seize the city and to pillage it. And it happened that, when the king heard these words, he was terrified and very moved. And he fell down on his bed, and he fell into feebleness out of grief. For it had not happened to him as he had intended.9Permaneció así en aquel lugar por muchos días; porque iba aumentándose su tristeza, de suerte que consintió en que se moría. And he was in that place through many days. For a great grief was renewed in him, and he concluded that he would die.10Con esto llamó a todos sus amigos, y les dijo: “El sueño ha huido de mis ojos; mi corazón se ve abatido y oprimido de pesares, And he called all his friends, and he said to them: “Sleep has withdrawn from my eyes, and I am declining, and my heart has collapsed out of anxiety.11he dicho en mi corazón: ¡A qué aflicción me veo reducido, y en qué abismo de tristeza me hallo, yo que estaba antes tan contento y querido, gozando de mi regia dignidad! And I said in my heart: How much trouble has come to me, and what floods of sorrow there are, where I am now! I used to be cheerful and beloved in my power!12Mas ahora se me presentan a la memoria los males que causé en Jerusalén, de donde me traje todos los despojos de oro y plata que allí tomé, y cómo sin motivo alguno envié a exterminar los moradores de la Judea. Truly, now, I remember the evils that I did in Jerusalem, from which place I also took away all the spoils of gold and silver that were in it, and I sent to carry away the inhabitants of Judah without cause.13Yo reconozco ahora que por eso han llovido sobre mí tales desastres; y ved aquí que muero de profunda melancolía en tierra extraña.” Therefore, I know that it is because of this that these evils have found me. And behold, I perish with great sorrow in a foreign land.”14Llamó después a Filipo, uno de sus confidentes, y le nombró regente de todo su reino; Then he called Philip, one of his friends, and he placed him first over all his kingdom.15y le entregó la diadema, el manto real y el anillo, a fin de que fuese a encargarse de su hijo Antíoco, y le educase para ocupar el trono. And Lysias knew that the king was dead, and he appointed Antiochus, his son, to reign, whom he had raised from adolescence. And those who were in the stronghold had enclosed the Israelites by surrounding the holy places. And they continually sought to do evil to them and to support the Gentiles.19Judas resolvió destruirlos, y convocó a todo el pueblo para ir a sitiarlos. And Judas intended to disperse them. We resolved to serve your father, and to walk according to his precepts, and to obey his edicts.24Por esta causa nos tomaron aversión los de nuestro mismo pueblo, han dado muerte a todo el que han encontrado de nosotros, y han robado nuestros bienes; And because of this, the sons of our people have alienated themselves from us, and they have put to death as many of us as they could find, and they have torn apart our inheritances.25y no tan solo han ejercido su violencia contra nosotros, sino también por todo nuestro país. And they have not extended their hand against us only, but also against all within our borders.26Y he aquí que ahora han puesto sitio al alcázar de Jerusalén para apoderarse de él, y han fortificado a Betsura. And the king was angry when he heard this. And he called together all his friends, and the leaders of his army, and those who were over the horsemen.29Le llegaron también tropas asalariadas de otros reinos, y de las islas del mar, But there even came to him mercenary armies from other kingdoms and from the islands of the sea.30de suerte que juntó un ejército de cien mil infantes con veinte mil hombres de caballería, y treinta y dos elefantes adiestrados para el combate. And the number of his army was one hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and thirty-two elephants trained for battle.31Y entrando por la Idumea, vinieron a poner sitio a Betsura, y la combatieron por espacio de muchos días, e hicieron máquinas de guerra; pero habiendo hecho una salida (los sitiados), las quemaron y pelearon valerosamente. And they traveled through Idumea, and they took a position near Bethzur. And they fought for many days, and they made machines of war. But they came out and burnt them with fire, and they fought manfully.32A este tiempo levantó Judas el sitio del alcázar, y dirigió sus tropas hacia Betzacara, frente al campamento del rey. And Judas departed from the stronghold, and he moved the camp to Bethzechariah, opposite the camp of the king.33Se levantó el rey antes de amanecer, e hizo marchar apresuradamente su ejército por el camino de Betzacara. Se prepararon para el combate ambos ejércitos, y dieron la señal con las trompetas. And the king rose up, before it was light, and he forced his troops to march toward the way of Bethzechariah. And they divided the beasts by the legions, and there stood by every elephant a thousand men, with shields joined together and with brass helmets on their heads. And five hundred well-ordered horsemen were chosen for every beast.36Estas tropas se hallaban anticipadamente en donde quiera que había de estar el elefante, e iban donde él iba, sin apartarse de él nunca. These were ready beforehand, and wherever the beast was, they were there; and whenever it moved, they moved, and they did not depart from it.37Sobre cada una de estas bestias había una fuerte torre de madera, que les servía de defensa, y sobre la torre máquinas de guerra; yendo en cada torre treinta y dos hombres esforzados, los cuales peleaban desde ella, y un indio gobernaba la bestia. Moreover, upon them there were strong wooden turrets, watching over every beast, with machines upon them, and on them were thirty-two valiant men, who fought from above, and an Indian to rule each beast.38El resto de la caballería, dividido en dos trozos, lo colocó en los flancos del ejército para excitarle con el sonido de las trompetas, y tener así encerradas las filas de sus legiones. And the rest of the horsemen, he stationed here and there, in two parts, with trumpets to stir up the army and to urge on those who were slow to move within its legions.39Así que salió el sol e hirió con sus rayos los broqueles de oro y de bronce, reflejaron estos la luz en los montes, resplandeciendo como antorchas encendidas. And so, when the sun reflected off the shields of gold and of brass, the mountains were resplendent from them, and they glowed like lamps of fire.40La una parte del ejército del rey caminaba por lo alto de los montes, y la otra por los lugares bajos, e iban avanzando con precaución y en buen orden. And part of the king’s army was divided to the high mountains, and the other part to the low places. And they went forth with order and caution.41Y todos los moradores del país estaban asombrados a las voces de aquella muchedumbre, y al movimiento de tanta gente, y al estruendo de sus armas; pues era grandísimo y muy poderoso aquel ejército. And all the inhabitants of the land were shaken at the voice of their multitude, and at the advance of the company, and at the clash of the armor. For the army was very great and strong.42Y se adelantó Judas con sus tropas para dar la batalla, y murieron del ejército del rey seiscientos hombres. And Judas and his army drew near for battle. And there fell of the king’s army six hundred men.43Eleazar, hijo de Saura, observó un elefante que iba protegido con corazas regias, y que era más alto que todos los demás: y juzgó que iría encima de él el rey. And Eleazar, the son of Saura, saw one of the beasts shielded with the king’s shield, and it was higher than the other beasts. So it seemed to him that the king must be on it.44E hizo el sacrificio de sí mismo por libertar a su pueblo, y granjearse un nombre eterno. And he gave himself for the freedom of his people, and to obtain for himself a name in eternity.45Corrió animosamente hacia el elefante por en medio de la legión, matando a la diestra y la siniestra, y atropellando a cuantos se le ponían delante; And he ran up to it boldly in the midst of the legion, killing on the right and on the left, and they fell down before him on this side and that.46y fue a meterse debajo del vientre del elefante, y le mató; pero cayendo la bestia encima de él, le dejó muerto. And he went between the feet of the elephant, and put himself under it, and he killed it. And, seeing the strength of the king and the forcefulness of his army, they turned themselves away from them.48Entonces las tropas del rey fueron contra ellos por el camino de Jerusalén, y llegando a la Judea, acamparon junto al monte Sión. But the king’s camp went up against them in Jerusalem. And the king’s camp took up a position near Judea and Mount Zion.49EI rey hizo un tratado con los que estaban en Betsura; los cuales salieron de la ciudad, porque estando sitiados dentro de ella, no tenían víveres, por ser aquel año sabático para los campos. And he made peace with those who were in Bethzur. And they went out of the city, because they had no provisions in their confinement, for it was the Sabbath of the land.50De esta suerte, el rey se apoderó de Betsura, dejando en ella una guarnición para su custodia. And the king captured Bethzur, and he stationed a garrison there to keep it.51Asentó después sus reales cerca del lugar santo; donde permaneció muchos días, preparando allí ballestas, y otros ingenios para lanzar fuegos, y máquinas para arrojar piedras y dardos, e instrumentos para tirar saetas, y además de eso hondas. And he turned his camp against the place of sanctification for many days. And he stationed there catapults and other machines: machines to cast fire, and windlasses to cast stones and darts, and small catapults to cast arrows and metal.52Los sitiados hicieron también máquinas contra las de los enemigos, y se defendieron por muchos días. But they also made machines against their machines, and they fought for many days.53Faltaban, empero, víveres, en la ciudad, por ser el año séptimo, y porque los gentiles que habían quedado en Judea habían consumido todos los repuestos. And there remained in the holy places a few men, for the famine had prevailed over them. And they were scattered, each one to his own place.55En esto llegó a entender Lisias que Filipo, a quien el rey Antíoco, estando aún en vida, había encargado la educación de su hijo Antíoco para que ocupase el trono, Then Lysias heard that Philip, whom king Antiochus had appointed, when he was still alive, to raise his son, Antiochus, and to reign,56había vuelto de Persia y de la Media con el ejército que había ido con él, y que buscaba medios para apoderarse del gobierno del reino. had returned from Persia and Media, with the army that went with him, and that he sought to take upon himself the affairs of the kingdom.57Por tanto, fue inmediatamente, y dijo al rey y a los generales del ejército: “Nos vamos consumiendo de día en día; tenemos pocos víveres; la plaza que tenemos sitiada está bien pertrechada; y lo que nos urge es arreglar los negocios del reino. He hurried to go and to say to the king and the commanders of the army: “We are weakened every day, and our food is limited, and the place that we besiege is strong, and it is incumbent upon us to put the kingdom in order.58Ahora, pues, compongámonos con estas gentes, y hagamos la paz con ellas, y con toda su nación; And so now, let us bestow a pledge to these men, and make peace with them and with all their nation.59y dejémosles que vivan como antes según sus leyes; pues por amor de sus leyes, que hemos despreciado nosotros, se han encendido en cólera, y hecho todas estas cosas.” And let us establish for them that they may walk according to their own laws, just as before. For, because of their laws, which we despised, they have become angry and have done all these things.”60Pareció bien al rey y a sus príncipes esta proposición; y envió a hacer la paz con los judíos, los cuales la aceptaron. And the idea was pleasing in the sight of the king and the leaders. And he sent to them to make peace. And they accepted it.61La confirmaron con juramento el rey y los príncipes; y salieron de la fortaleza los que la defendían. And the king and the leaders swore to them. And they went out of the stronghold.62Y entró el rey en el monte Sión, y observó las fortificaciones que en él había; pero violó luego el juramento hecho, mandando derribar el muro que había alrededor. Then the king entered into Mount Zion, and saw the fortifications of the place, and so he abruptly broke the oath that he had sworn, and he commanded the surrounding wall to be destroyed.63Partió después de allí a toda prisa, y se volvió a Antioquía, donde halló que Filipo se había hecho dueño de la ciudad; mas habiendo peleado contra él, la recobró. And he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip ruling the city. And he fought against him and occupied the city.
