1 Macabeos 7
1El año ciento cincuenta y uno. Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, salió de la ciudad de Roma, y llegó con poca comitiva a una ciudad marítima, y allí comenzó a reinar. In the one hundred and fifty-first year, Demetrius, the son of Seleucus, departed from the city of Rome, and he went up with a few men to a maritime city, and he reigned there.2Y apenas entró en el reino de sus padres, cuando el ejército se apoderó de Antíoco y de Lisias, para presentárselos a él. And it happened that, as he entered into the house of the kingdom of his fathers, the army captured Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them to him.3Mas así que lo supo, dijo: “Haced que no vea yo su cara”. And the matter became known to him, and he said, “Do not show me their face.”4Con esto la misma tropa les quitó la vida, y Demetrio quedó sentado en el trono de su reino. And so the army killed them. And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom.5Y vinieron a presentársele algunos hombres malvados e impíos de Israel, cuyo caudillo era Alcimo, el cual pretendía ser Sumo Sacerdote. And there came to him iniquitous and impious men from Israel. And Alcimus was their leader, who wanted to be made a priest.6Acusaron estos a su nación delante del rey, diciendo: “Judas y sus hermanos han hecho perecer a todos tus amigos, y a nosotros nos han arrojado de nuestra tierra. And they accused the people to the king, saying: “Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends, and he has scattered us from our land.7Envía, pues, una persona de tu confianza, para que vaya y vea todos los estragos que aquel nos ha causado a nosotros y a las provincias del rey y castigue a todos sus amigos y partidarios.” Now, therefore, send a man, whom you trust, and let him go and see all the destruction he has done to us and to the regions of the king. And let him punish all his friends and their helpers.”8En efecto, el rey eligió de entre sus amigos a Báquides, que tenía el gobierno de la otra parte del río, magnate del reino, y de la confianza del rey; y le envió And so the king chose, from among his friends, Bacchides, who ruled across the great river in the kingdom, and who was faithful to the king. And he sent him9a reconocer las vejaciones que había hecho Judas; confirió además el pontificado al impío Alcimo, al cual dio orden de castigar a los hijos de Israel. to see the destruction that Judas had done. Moreover, he appointed the wicked Alcimus to the priesthood, and he commanded him to take revenge on the sons of Israel.10Se pusieron en camino, y entraron con un grande ejército en el país de Judá; y enviaron mensajeros a Judas y a sus hermanos para engañarlos con buenas palabras. And they rose up and came forth with a great army into the land of Judah. And they sent messengers, who spoke to Judas and his brothers with words of peace, in deceitfulness.11Pero estos no quisieron fiarse de ellos, viendo que habían venido con un poderoso ejército. But they did not heed their words, for they saw that they arrived with a great army.12Sin embargo, el colegio de los escribas pasó a estar con Alcimo y con Báquides para hacerles algunas proposiciones justas. And he spoke to them peaceful words, and he swore to them, saying, “We will not carry out any evil against you or your friends.”16Dieron ellos crédito a su palabra; pero él hizo prender a sesenta de los mismos, y en un día les hizo quitar la vida; conforme a lo que está escrito: And they believed him. And he captured sixty of their men and killed them in one day, according to the word that is written:17“Alrededor de Jerusalén arrojaron los cuerpos de tus santos, y su sangre; ni hubo quien les diese sepultura”. The flesh of your saints, and their blood, they have poured out all around Jerusalem, and there was no one who would bury them.18Con esto, se apoderó de todo el pueblo un grande temor y espanto, y decían: No se encuentra verdad ni justicia en estas gentes; pues han quebrantado el tratado y el juramento que hicieron. Then fear and trembling hovered over all the people. For they said: “There is no truth or judgment among them. For they have transgressed the agreement and the oath that they swore.”19Levantó Báquides sus reales de Jerusalén, y fue a acamparse junto a Betceca, desde donde envió a prender a muchos que habían abandonado su partido; haciendo degollar a varios del pueblo, y que los arrojaran en un profundo pozo. And Bacchides moved the camp from Jerusalem, and he took up a position at Bethzaith. And he sent and captured many of those who had fled from him, and some of the people he killed in sacrifice, and he threw them into a great pit.20Encargó después el gobierno del país a Alcimo, dejándole un cuerpo de tropas que le sostuviera; y se volvió Báquides adonde estaba el rey. Then he committed the country to Alcimus, and he left behind troops with him to assist him. And he went out into all the parts surrounding Judea, and he took vengeance on the men who had rebelled, and they ceased to go forth into the region any longer.25Mas cuando Alcimo vio que Judas y sus gentes ya prevalecían, y que él no podía resistirles, se volvió a ver al rey, y los acusó de muchos delitos. But Alcimus saw that Judas, and those who were with him, prevailed. And he knew that he was not able to withstand them. And so he returned to the king, and he accused them of many crimes.26Entonces el rey envió a Nicanor, uno de sus más ilustres magnates, y enemigo declarado de Israel, con la orden de acabar con este pueblo. And the king sent Nicanor, one of his principal noblemen, who was a cultivator of hostility against Israel. And he commanded him to overthrow the people.27Pasó Nicanor a Jerusalén con un grande ejército, y envió sus emisarios a Judas y a sus hermanos para engañarlos con palabras de paz, And Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great army, and he sent to Judas and his brothers words of peace, with deceitfulness,28diciéndoles: “No haya guerra entre mí y vosotros. Yo pasaré con poca comitiva a veros y tratar de paz”. saying: “Let there be no fighting between me and you. I will come with a few men, to see your faces with peace.”29En efecto, fue Nicanor a ver a Judas; y se saludaron mutuamente como amigos; pero los enemigos estaban prontos para apoderarse de Judas. And he came to Judas, and they greeted one another in turns, peaceably. And the enemies were prepared to abduct Judas.30Y llegando Judas a entender que habían venido con mala intención, temió y no quiso volver a verle más. And the plan became known to Judas, that he came to him with deceit. And so he became very afraid of him, and he was no longer willing to see his face.31Conoció entonces Nicanor que estaba descubierta su trama; y salió a pelear contra Judas junto a Cafarsalama, And Nicanor knew that his plan had been exposed, and he went out to meet Judas in battle near Capharsalama.32donde quedaron muertos como unos cinco mil hombres del ejército de Nicanor; y se retiraron a la ciudad de David. And there fell of the army of Nicanor nearly five thousand men, and they fled into the city of David.33Después de esto subió Nicanor al monte Sión, y salieron a saludarle pacíficamente algunos sacerdotes del pueblo, y hacerle ver los holocaustos que se ofrecían por el rey. And after these events, Nicanor ascended to mount Zion. And some of the priests of the people went out to greet him in peace, and to show him the holocausts that were offered for the king.34Mas él los recibió con desprecio y mofa, los contaminó y les habló con arrogancia, But he mocked and despised them, and he defiled them. And he spoke arrogantly,35y lleno de cólera les juró diciendo: “Si no entregáis en mis manos a Judas y a su ejército, inmediatamente que yo vuelva victorioso, abrasaré esta casa”. Y se marchó sumamente enfurecido. and he swore with anger, saying, “Unless Judas and his army have been delivered into my hands, when I return in peace, I will burn this house.” And he went out with great anger.36Entonces los sacerdotes entraron en el Templo a presentarse ante el altar, y llorando dijeron: And the priests went in and stood before the face of the altar and the temple. And weeping, they said:37“Señor, Tú elegiste esta Casa a fin de que en ella fuese invocado tu Nombre, y fuese un lugar de oración y de plegarias para tu pueblo. “You, O Lord, have chosen this house so that your name may be invoked in it, so that it may be a house of prayer and supplication for your people.38Toma venganza de este hombre y su ejército, y perezcan al filo de la espada. Ten presentes sus blasfemias, y no les permitas que subsistan”. Accomplish vindication with this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not allow them to continue.”39Habiendo partido Nicanor de Jerusalén, fue a acamparse cerca de Bethorón, y allí se le juntó el ejército de Siria. Then Nicanor departed from Jerusalem, and he positioned his camp near Bethhoron, and an army of Syria met him there.40Judas acampó en Adarsa con tres mil hombres, e hizo oración a Dios en estos términos: And Judas took a position in Adasa with three thousand men. And Judas prayed, and he said:41“Señor, cuando los enviados del rey Senaquerib blasfemaron contra Ti, vino un Ángel que les mató ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres. “O Lord, when those who were sent by king Sennacherib blasphemed against you, an angel went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.42Extermina hoy del mismo modo a nuestra vista ese ejército; y sepan todos los demás que Nicanor ha hablado indignamente contra tu Santuario, y júzgale conforme a su maldad.” Just so, crush this army in our sight today, and so let the others know that he has spoken evil against your sanctuary. And judge him according to his wickedness.”43La batalla se dio el día trece del mes de Adar; y quedó derrotado el ejército de Nicanor, siendo él el primero que murió en el combate. And the armies were sent into battle together on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. And the camp of Nicanor was crushed, and he himself was among the first slain in the battle.44Viendo los soldados de Nicanor que este había muerto, arrojaron las armas, y echaron a huir. So then, when his army saw that Nicanor had fallen, they threw away their weapons and fled.45Los judíos los siguieron al alcance toda una jornada desde Adacer hasta la entrada de Gazara, y al ir tras de ellos tocaban las trompetas dando señales. And they pursued them for one day’s journey from Adasa, even until one comes into Gazara, and they sounded the trumpets after them with signals.46Con esto salían gentes de todos los pueblos de la Judea situados en las cercanías, y cargando sobre ellos con denuedo, los hacían retroceder; de suerte que fueron todos pasados a cuchillo, sin que escapara ni siquiera uno. And they went forth from all of the towns all around Judea. And they herded them with the horns, and they turned back again to them, and they were all felled with the sword, and there was not so much as one of them left behind.47Se apoderaron en seguida de sus despojos, y cortaron la cabeza a Nicanor, y su mano derecha, la cual había levantado él insolentemente, y las llevaron y colgaron a la vista de Jerusalén. And they took their spoils like a prey, and they cut off the head of Nicanor, and his right hand, which he had extended arrogantly, and they brought it, and hung it up opposite Jerusalem.48Se alegró sobremanera el pueblo, y pasaron aquel día en grande regocijo. And the people rejoiced exceedingly, and they spent that day in great joy.49Y ordenó que se celebrase todos los años esta fiesta a trece del mes de Adar. And he established that this day should be kept every year, on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar.50Y la tierra de Judá quedó en reposo por algún tiempo. And the land of Judah was quieted for a brief time.
