1 Samuel 4
1La palabra de Samuel corrió por todo Israel. (En aquel tiempo) salió Israel al encuentro de los filisteos para hacerles guerra, y acamparon en Ebenéser, mientras los filisteos sentaron sus reales en Afec. And it happened that, in those days, the Philistines assembled to fight. And Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle, and he made camp beside the Stone of Assistance. But the Philistines went to Aphek,2Los filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla contra Israel, y se trabó la batalla, en la cual Israel fue vencido por los filisteos, que mataron en el campo a unos cuatro mil hombres del ejército. and they positioned their troops against Israel. Then, when the conflict began, Israel turned his back to the Philistines. And those greater by birth of Israel said: “Why has the Lord struck us today before the Philistines? Let us bring to ourselves the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh. And let it enter into our midst, so that it may save us from the hand of our enemies.”4Envió, pues, el pueblo mensajeros a Silo, y trajeron de allí el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé de los Ejércitos, que está sentado sobre los querubines. Therefore, the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, sitting upon the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of the covenant of God.5Cuando el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé llegó al campamento, todo Israel dio voces con algazara tan grande que se conmovió la tierra. And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord had arrived in the camp, all of Israel shouted with a great clamor, and the land resounded.6Oyeron los filisteos el estruendo de la algazara y dijeron: “¿Qué estruendo de algazara tan grande es este en el campamento de los hebreos?” Y supieron que el Arca de Yahvé había venido al campamento. And the Philistines heard the voice of the clamor, and they said, “What is this voice of a great clamor in the camp of the Hebrews?” And they realized that the ark of the Lord had arrived in the camp.7Con esto se atemorizaron los filisteos, pues se dijeron: “Ha venido Dios al campamento”; y agregaron: “¡Ay de nosotros! Pues cosa como esta no ha sucedido nunca antes. And the Philistines were afraid, saying, “God has entered into the camp.” And they groaned, saying:8¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de ese poderoso Dios? Es aquel Dios que hirió a Egipto con toda suerte de plagas en el desierto. “Woe to us! For there was no such great exultation yesterday, or the day before. Woe to us! Who will save us from the hand of these sublime gods? These are the gods who struck Egypt with all the plagues, in the desert.”9Mostraos fuertes y sed hombres, filisteos, para que no seáis siervos de los hebreos, como ellos lo han sido de vosotros. Sed hombres, y luchad.” “Be strengthened, and be manly, O Philistines! Otherwise, you may serve the Hebrews, as they also have served you. Be strengthened and wage war!”10Dieron, pues, los filisteos la batalla y fue derrotado Israel. Huyó cada cual a su tienda, y la derrota fue tan grande, que de Israel cayeron treinta mil hombres de a pie. Therefore, the Philistines fought, and Israel was cut down, and each one fled to his own tent. And an exceedingly great slaughter occurred. And thirty thousand foot soldiers from Israel fell.11Fue tomada también el Arca de Dios; y murieron los dos hijos de Helí, Ofní y Fineés. And the ark of God was captured. Also, the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.12Un hombre de Benjamín, uno del ejército, corrió y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, rasgado el vestido y cubierta de polvo la cabeza. Now a man of Benjamin, rushing from the troops, arrived at Shiloh on the same day, with his clothing torn, and with his head sprinkled with dust.13Cuando llegó, he aquí que Helí estaba sentado en su silla al lado del camino, mirando, porque temblaba su corazón por el Arca de Dios. Llegó, pues, el hombre y dijo en la ciudad lo que había pasado, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en alaridos. And when he had arrived, Eli was sitting on a seat opposite the way, gazing out. For his heart was fearful on behalf of the ark of God. Then, after this man entered the city, he announced it to the city. And the entire city wailed.14Al oír Helí las voces de alarido, preguntó: “¿Qué ruido tumultuoso es ese?” Entonces el hombre vino a toda prisa y dio la noticia a Helí. And Eli heard the sound of the outcry, and he said, “What is this sound, this tumult?” And the man hurried, and he went and announced it to Eli.15Helí tenía ya noventa y ocho años; sus ojos no se movían más, y ya no podía ver. Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes had dimmed, so that he was not able to see.16Dijo el hombre a Helí: “Yo vengo del ejército; hoy mismo huí del ejército.” Helí preguntó: “¿Qué ha pasado, hijo mío?” And he said to Eli: “I am the one who came from the battle. And it is I who fled from the troops today.” And he said to him, “What has happened, my son?”17Y respondió el mensajero y dijo: “Huyó Israel delante de los filisteos, y fue grande el estrago en el pueblo; también tus dos hijos, Ofní y Fineés, quedaron muertos; y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada.” And responding, the man reported and said: “Israel has fled before the Philistines. And a great ruin has happened to the people. Moreover, your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, also have died. And the ark of God has been captured.”18Y sucedió que cuando mencionó el Arca de Dios, cayó Helí de la silla hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, y se le quebró la cerviz, y murió; porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Fue juez de Israel durante cuarenta años. And when he had named the ark of God, he fell from the seat backwards, toward the door, and, having broken his neck, he died. For he was an old man of great age. And he judged Israel for forty years.19Su nuera, la mujer de Fineés, que estaba encinta y cercana ya al parto, como oyese la nueva de haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios, y que habían muerto su suegro y su marido, se doblegó y dio a luz, porque de repente vinieron sobre ella los dolores de parto. Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, and her delivery was near. And upon hearing the news that the ark of God had been captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband had died, she bent down and went into labor. For her pains rushed upon her suddenly.20Cuando estaba ya expirando, decían las mujeres que la asistían: “No temas, pues has dado a luz un hijo.” Mas ella no respondió, ni puso en ello su atención. Then, when she was near death, those who were standing around her said to her, “You should not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond to them, and she did not notice them.21Llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: “Se ha apartado de Israel la Gloria”, por haber sido capturada el Arca de Dios, y a causa de su suegro y de su marido. And she called the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory of Israel has been taken away,” because the ark of God was captured, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.22Dijo, pues: “Se ha apartado de Israel la Gloria”, por haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios. And she said, “The glory has been taken away from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured.
