1Al anciano no le reprendas con aspereza, sino exhórtale como a padre; a los jóvenes, como a hermanos; You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;2a las ancianas, como a madres; a las jóvenes, como a hermanas con toda pureza. with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.3A las viudas hónralas si lo son de verdad. Honor those widows who are true widows.4Pero si una viuda tiene hijos o nietos, aprendan estos primero a mostrar la piedad para con su propia casa y a dar en retorno lo que deben a sus mayores, porque esto es grato delante de Dios. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.5La que es verdadera viuda y desamparada tiene puesta la esperanza en Dios y persevera en súplicas y en oraciones noche y día. But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.6Mas la que se entrega a los placeres, viviendo está muerta. For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.7Intima esto para que sean irreprensibles. And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.8Si alguien no tiene providencia para los suyos, y particularmente para los de su propia casa, ha negado la fe y es peor que un incrédulo. But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.9Como viuda sea inscrita solamente aquella que tenga sesenta años y haya sido mujer de un solo marido, Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,10que esté acreditada por buenas obras: si educó hijos, si practicó la hospitalidad, si lavó los pies a los santos, si socorrió a los atribulados, si se dedicó a toda buena obra. who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.11Mas no admitas a las viudas jóvenes; pues cuando se disgustan del primer amor con Cristo, desean casarse, But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,12y se hacen culpables porque le quebrantaron la primera fe. resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.13Aprenden, además, a ser ociosas, andando de casa en casa; y no solo ociosas, sino chismosas e indiscretas, hablando de lo que no deben. And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.14Quiero, pues, que aquellas que son jóvenes se casen, tengan hijos, gobiernen la casa, y no den al adversario ningún pretexto de maledicencia; Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.15porque algunas ya se han apartado yendo en pos de Satanás. For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.16Si alguna cristiana tiene viudas, déles lo necesario, y no sea gravada la Iglesia, para que pueda socorrer a las que son viudas de verdad. If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.17Los presbíteros que dirigen bien sean considerados dignos de doble honor, sobre todo los que trabajan en predicar y enseñar. Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.18Pues dice la Escritura: “No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla” y “Digno es el obrero de su jornal”. For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”19Contra un presbítero no admitas acusación si no es por testimonio de dos o tres testigos. Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.20A aquellos que pequen repréndelos delante de todos, para que los demás también cobren temor. Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.21Te conjuro en presencia de Dios y de Cristo Jesús y de los ángeles escogidos, que guardes estas cosas sin prejuicio, no haciendo nada por parcialidad. I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.22A nadie impongas las manos precipitadamente, y no te hagas cómplice de pecados ajenos. Guárdate puro. You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.23No bebas más agua sola, sino toma un poco de vino a causa del estómago y de tus frecuentes enfermedades. Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.24Los pecados de ciertos hombres son manifiestos ya antes de (nuestro) juicio, aunque en algunos siguen también después. The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.25Asimismo, también las obras buenas son manifiestas. Y (en cuanto a) las que no lo son, no podrán quedar ocultas. Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.
