1Fue Roboam a Siquem; porque todo Israel había concurrido a Siquem para proclamarle rey. Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.2Cuando lo supo Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, que estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de la presencia del rey Salomón, But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.3volvió de Egipto, pues habían enviado a llamarle. Vino entonces Jeroboam con todo Israel, y hablaron con Roboam, diciendo: And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:4“Tu padre hizo duro nuestro yugo; ahora alivia tú la dura servidumbre de tu padre y su yugo pesado que nos impuso, y te serviremos.” “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”5Él les contestó: “Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.” Y el pueblo se fue. But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,6Luego consultó el rey Roboam a los ancianos, que habían servido a Salomón, mientras vivía, y les preguntó: “¿Qué me aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?” he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”7Le contestaron, diciendo: “Si eres bueno con este pueblo y condesciendes con ellos y les diriges palabras amables, serán siervos tuyos perpetuamente.” And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”8Pero él dejó el consejo que los ancianos le dieron y consultó a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y formaban su corte. But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.9Les dijo: “¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: «Alivia el yugo que nos impuso tu padre»?” And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”10Le contestaron los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, diciendo: “Al pueblo que te dijo: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, aligéranoslo tú, le responderás en estos términos: «Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre. But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.11Mi padre os impuso un yugo pesado, pero yo lo agravaré todavía más; mi padre os azotó con látigos, mas yo lo haré con escorpiones».” My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”12VoIvieron Jeroboam y todo el pueblo al tercer día a Roboam, como el rey había mandado, diciendo: “Volved a mí al tercer día”; Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.13pero el rey, dejando el consejo de los ancianos, les respondió con dureza, And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.14y siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, dijo: “Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo lo agravaré todavía más; mi padre os azotó con látigos, mas yo lo haré con escorpiones.” And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”15Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo, pues esto sucedió por voluntad de Dios para cumplir la palabra que Yahvé había dicho por boca de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat. And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.16Viendo todo Israel que el rey no los escuchaba, el pueblo dio al rey la siguiente respuesta: “¿Qué tenemos nosotros que ver con David? ¿Cuál es nuestra herencia con el hijo de Isaí? ¡Cada uno a su tienda, oh Israel! ¡Y tú, David, mira por tu propia casa!” Y todo Israel se retiró a sus tiendas. Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.17De manera que Roboam reinó (solamente) sobre cuántos de los hijos de Israel habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.
