1Dijeron los discípulos de los profetas a Eliseo: “Mira, el lugar donde habitamos contigo, es muy estrecho para nosotros. Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha: “Behold, the place in which we live before you is too narrow for us.2Vayamos, pues, a la ribera del Jordán; allí tomaremos cada uno una viga y haremos para nosotros un lugar donde habitemos.” Él respondió: “¡Id!” Let us go as far as the Jordan, and let us each take from the forest a piece of timber, so that we may build for ourselves a place to live there.” And he said, “Go.”3Mas uno de ellos dijo: “Haznos el favor de venir con tus siervos.” “Yo iré”, contestó él. And one of them said, “Then you, too, should go with your servants.” And he answered, “I will go.”4Se fue con ellos, y llegaron al Jordán, donde cortaron maderas. And he went with them. And when they had arrived at the Jordan, they were cutting down wood.5Pero mientras uno cortaba una viga, se le cayó el hierro en el agua, por lo cual exclamó: “¡Ay, señor mío! Era prestado.” Then it happened that, while someone was cutting timber, the iron of the ax fell into the water. And he cried out and said: “Alas, alas, alas, my lord! For this thing was borrowed.”6Preguntó el varón de Dios: “¿Dónde ha caído?” Y habiéndosele indicado el lugar, cortó un palo, y lo arrojó allí; y salió el hierro flotando. Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And he indicated to him the place. Then he cut off a piece of wood, and he threw it in. And the iron floated up.7Entonces dijo: “Recógelo”; y él alargó la mano y lo asió. And he said, “Take it.” And he extended his hand, and took it.8El rey de Siria estaba en guerra con Israel; y en un consejo que celebró con sus siervos, dijo: “En tal y tal parte estará mi campamento.” Now the king of Syria was fighting against Israel, and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “In this and that place, let us set up an ambush.”9Entonces el varón de Dios mandó a decir al rey de Israel: “Guárdate de pasar por tal lugar; que por allí van a bajar los sirios.” And so the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: “Take care not to pass by that place. For the Syrians are there in ambush.”10Envió el rey de Israel gentes al lugar que el varón de Dios le había señalado y respecto del cual le había prevenido. Y así se resguardó repetidas veces. And so the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God had told him, and he prevented it. And he preserved himself, concerning that place, not merely once or twice.11El corazón del rey de Siria se inquietó por esa táctica, por lo cual llamó a sus servidores y les dijo: “¿No queréis manifestarme quién de nosotros está de parte del Rey de Israel?” And the heart of the king of Syria was disturbed over this matter. And calling together his servants, he said, “Why have you not revealed to me the one who is betraying me to the king of Israel?”12Respondió uno de sus servidores: “Ninguno, oh rey, señor mío; sino que Eliseo, el profeta que está en Israel, manifiesta al rey de Israel las palabras que tú dices en tu alcoba.” And one of his servants said: “By no means, my lord the king! Rather it is the prophet Elisha, who is in Israel, who is revealing to the king of Israel every word whatsoever that you will speak in your conclave.”13Dijo entonces (el rey): “Id y ved dónde está, y enviaré a prenderle.” Luego le dieron esta noticia: “He aquí que está en Dotan.” And he said to them, “Go, and see where he is, so that I may send and capture him.” And they reported to him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”14Envió, pues, allí caballos y carros y muchas tropas, que vinieron de noche y cercaron la ciudad. Therefore, he sent horses, and chariots, and experienced soldiers to that place. And when they had arrived in the night, they encircled the city.15Y cuando el criado del varón de Dios se levantó muy de mañana y salió, he aquí que tropas tenían cercada la ciudad con caballos y carros. El criado le dijo: “¡Ay! señor mío, ¿qué haremos?” Now the servant of the man of God, arising at first light, went out and saw the army all around the city, with horses and chariots. And he reported it to him, saying: “Alas, alas, alas, my lord! What shall we do?”16Mas él respondió: “No tengas miedo; pues los que están con nosotros son más que los que están con ellos.” But he responded: “Do not be afraid. For there are more with us than with them.”17Luego Eliseo se puso a orar, diciendo: “¡Yahvé, ábrele los ojos, para que vea!” Y Yahvé abrió los ojos del criado y vio este que el monte estaba lleno de caballos y de carros de fuego en derredor de Eliseo. And when Elisha had prayed, he said, “O Lord, open the eyes of this one, so that he may see.” And the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, all around Elisha.18Después bajaron (los sirios) contra Eliseo, el cual oró a Yahvé y dijo: “Hiere, te ruego, a estos gentiles con ceguera.” En efecto (Yahvé) los hirió con ceguera, conforme a la súplica de Eliseo. Then truly, the enemies descended to him. But Elisha prayed to the Lord, saying: “Strike, I beg you, this people with blindness.” And the Lord struck them, so that they would not see, in accord with the word of Elisha.19Entonces Eliseo les dijo: “No es este el camino, ni es esta la ciudad. Seguidme, y os llevaré al hombre que buscáis.” Y los condujo a Samaria. Then Elisha said to them: “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will reveal to you the man whom you are seeking.” Then he led them into Samaria.20Cuando llegaron a Samaria, dijo Eliseo: “¡Yahvé, abre los ojos de estos hombres para que vean!”, y Yahvé les abrió los ojos, de modo que vieron, y he aquí que estaban en medio de Samaria. And when they had entered into Samaria, Elisha said, “O Lord, open the eyes of these ones, so that they may see.” And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw themselves to be in the midst of Samaria.21Al verlos el rey de Israel dijo a Eliseo: “¿Los mato, padre mío?” And the king of Israel, when he had seen them, said to Elisha, “My father, should I not strike them?”22Pero él dijo: “No los mates. Mata a quienes has cautivado con tu arco y con tu espada. Pero a estos, ponles delante pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y después se vuelvan a su señor.” And he said: “You should not strike them. For you did not capture them with your sword or bow, so that you might strike them. Instead, set bread and water before them, so that they may eat and drink, and then go to their lord.”23Les dio una gran comida; y comieron y bebieron; luego los despachó, y se fueron a su señor. Tras lo cual las bandas sirias no volvieron más al país de Israel. And a great preparation of foods was placed before them. And they ate and drank. And he dismissed them. And they went away to their lord. And the robbers of Syria no longer came into the land of Israel.24Después de esto Benhadad, rey de Siria, reunió todo su ejército, subió y puso sitio a Samaria. Now it happened that, after these things, Benhadad, the king of Syria, gathered together his entire army, and he ascended and was besieging Samaria.25Hubo mucha hambre en Samaria y duró el sitio hasta el extremo de venderse una cabeza de asno por ochenta siclos de plata, y la cuarta parte de un cabo de estiércol de paloma por cinco siclos de plata. And a great famine occurred in Samaria. And it was blockaded for a long time, until the head of a donkey was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one fourth part of a pint of pigeons’ dung sold for five silver coins.26Fue entonces que al pasar el rey de Israel sobre la muralla, una mujer le gritó, diciendo: “¡Sálvame, oh rey, señor mío!”; And as the king of Israel was passing by the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying, “Save me, my lord the king!”27el cual le respondió: “Si no te salva Yahvé, ¿cómo puedo salvarte yo? ¿Con los productos de la era o del lagar?” And he said: “If the Lord does not save you, how am I able to save you? From the grain floor, or from the wine press?” And the king said to her, “What is the matter with you?” And she responded:28Y el rey le preguntó: “¿Qué tienes?” Ella contestó: “Esta mujer me dijo: «Da tu hijo para que le comamos hoy, y mañana comeremos al mío.» “This woman said to me: ‘Give your son, so that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’29Cocimos, pues, a mi hijo, y le comimos; mas cuando yo al día siguiente le dije a ella: «Entrega a tu hijo para que le comamos», escondió a su hijo.” Therefore, we cooked my son, and we ate him. And I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, so that we may eat him.’ But she concealed her son.”30Al oír las palabras de la mujer, rasgó el rey sus vestidos; y mientras proseguía andando por la muralla, el pueblo observaba el cilicio que por dentro llevaba sobre su cuerpo. When the king had heard this, he tore his garments, and he passed along the wall. And all the people saw the haircloth that he had worn underneath, beside his flesh.31Dijo entonces: “Esto haga Dios conmigo, y más aún, si la cabeza de Eliseo, hijo de Safat, queda hoy sobre sus hombros.” And the king said, “May God do these things to me, and may he add these other things, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, will remain on him this day!”32Eliseo se hallaba a la sazón sentado en su casa, y los ancianos estaban sentados con él, cuando (el rey) envió uno de los hombres que le servían; pero antes que llegara este enviado a su casa, dijo (Eliseo) a los ancianos: “¿Habéis visto cómo ese hijo de homicida manda a cortarme la cabeza? Mirad: cuando llegue el enviado, cerrad la puerta y rechazadle en la puerta. ¿No se oye ya, en pos de él, el ruido de los pies de su señor?” Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And so he sent a man ahead. And before that messenger arrived, he said to the elders: “Do you not know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? Therefore, watch, and when the messenger arrives, close the door. And you shall not permit him to enter. For behold, the sound of his lord’s feet is behind him.”33Estaba todavía hablando con ellos, cuando he aquí que llegó el emisario a su casa, y dijo: “He aquí que esta calamidad viene de Yahvé. ¿Qué tengo ya que esperar de Yahvé?” While he was still speaking to them, the messenger appeared who was sent to him. And he said: “Behold, such a great evil is from the Lord! What more should I expect from the Lord?”
