2 Macabeos 10
1Entretanto el Macabeo y los que le seguían, protegidos del Señor, recobraron el Templo y la ciudad, But Maccabeus and those who were with him, the Lord protecting them, even recovered the temple and the city.2y demolieron los altares que los gentiles habían erigido en las plazas, y asimismo los templos de los ídolos. Then he demolished the altars, which the foreigners had constructed in the streets, and likewise the shrines.3Y habiendo purificado el Templo, construyeron un altar nuevo, y sacando fuego por medio de unos pedernales, ofrecieron sacrificios, dos años después, y pusieron incienso, las lámparas, y los panes de la proposición. And, having purged the temple, they made another altar. And, taking glowing stones from the fire, they began to offer sacrifices again after two years, and they set out incense, and lamps, and the bread of the Presence.4Ejecutado esto, postrados en tierra, rogaban al Señor que nunca más los dejase caer en semejantes desgracias; y, caso que llegasen a pecar, los castigase con más benignidad y no los entregase en poder de hombres bárbaros y blasfemos. Having done these things, they petitioned the Lord, lying prostrate on the ground, lest they should fall once more into such evils, but also, if they should at any time sin, that they might be chastised by him more mildly, and not be delivered over to barbarians and blasphemous men.5Y el Templo fue purificado en aquel mismo día en que había sido profanado por los extranjeros, es decir, el día veinticinco del mes de Casleu. Then, on the day that the temple had been polluted by the foreigners, it happened on the same day that the purification was accomplished, on the twenty-fifth day of the month, which was Kislev.6En efecto, celebraron esta fiesta con regocijo por espacio de ocho días, a manera de la de los Tabernáculos, acordándose que poco tiempo antes habían pasado esta solemnidad de los Tabernáculos en los montes y cuevas a manera de fieras. And they celebrated for eight days with joy, in the manner of the Feast of Tabernacles, remembering that, a little time before, they had celebrated the solemn days of the Feast of Tabernacles in mountains and caves, in the manner of wild beasts.7Por cuyo motivo llevaban tallos y ramos verdes y palmas en honor de Aquel que les había concedido la dicha de purificar su lugar. Because of this, they now preferred to carry boughs and green branches and palms, for him who had prospered the cleansing of his place.8Y de común consejo y acuerdo decretaron que toda la nación judía celebrase esta fiesta todos los años en aquellos días. And they decreed a common precept and decree, that all the people of the Jews should keep those days every year.9Por lo que toca a la muerte de Antíoco, llamado Epífanes, fue del modo que hemos dicho. Now certainly Antiochus, who was called illustrious, held himself to be so at the passing of his life.10Mas ahora referiremos los hechos de Eupator, hijo del impío Antíoco, recopilando los males que ocasionaron sus guerras. But next we will describe what happened with Eupator, the son of the impious Antiochus, abridging the evils which happened in the wars.11Habiendo entrado este a reinar, nombró para la dirección de los negocios del reino a un tal Lisias, gobernador militar de Fenicia y de Siria. For when he assumed the kingdom, he appointed, over the affairs of the kingdom, a certain Lysias, leader of the Phoenician and Syrian military.12Porque Ptolomeo llamado Macrón, había resuelto observar inviolablemente la justicia respecto de los judíos, y portarse pacíficamente con ellos, sobre todo a vista de las injusticias que se les había hecho sufrir. For Ptolemy, who was called Macer, decided to be strict in justice toward the Jews, especially because of the iniquity that had been done to them, and to deal with them peacefully.13Pero acusado por esto mismo ante Eupator, por los amigos, que a cada paso le trataban de traidor por haber abandonado a Chipre, cuyo gobierno le había confiado Filometor, y porque después de haberse pasado al partido de Antíoco Epífanes había desertado también de él, acabó su vida con el veneno. But, for this reason, he was accused before Eupator by his friends, and was frequently called a traitor. For he had deserted Cyprus, which Philometor had entrusted to him. And so, transferring to Antiochus the illustrious, he even withdrew from him. And he ended his life by poison.14A este tiempo Gorgias, que tenía el gobierno de aquellas tierras, asalariando tropas extranjeras, molestaba frecuentemente a los judíos. But Gorgias, when he was the leader of the places, taking to him new arrivals, frequently made war against the Jews.15Y los judíos que ocupaban plazas fuertes en lugares ventajosos, acogían en ellas a los que huían de Jerusalén, y buscaban ocasiones de hacer guerra. In truth, the Jews, who held the strategic fortresses, took in those who were fleeing from Jerusalem, and they attempted to make war.16Pero aquellos que seguían al Macabeo, hecha oración al Señor para implorar su auxilio, asaltaron con valor las fortalezas de los idumeos; In fact, those who were with Maccabeus, petitioning the Lord through prayers to be their helper, made a forceful attack upon the fortresses of the Idumeans.17y después de un crudo y porfiado combate, se apoderaron de ellas, mataron a cuantos se les pusieron delante, no siendo los pasados a cuchillo menos de veinte mil personas. And, persevering with much force, they obtained the places, killing those they met, and cutting down in all no less than twenty thousand.18Mas como algunos se hubiesen refugiado en dos castillos sumamente fuertes, abastecidos de todo lo necesario para defenderse, Yet certain ones, when they had fled into two well-fortified towers, gave all appearance of fighting back.19dejó el Macabeo para expugnarlos a Simón y José, y también a Zaqueo, con bastantes tropas que tenían bajo su mando, y marchó con las suyas adonde las necesidades más urgentes de la guerra le llamaban. So Maccabeus left behind Simon and Joseph, and likewise Zachaeus, and those who were with them, to fight against them. And since those who were with them were sufficient in number, he turned back to those who attacked more forcefully.20Pero las tropas de Simón, llevadas de la avaricia, se dejaron sobornar con dinero por algunos de los que estaban en los castillos; y habiendo recibido hasta setenta mil didracmas, dejaron escapar a varios de ellos. In truth, those who were with Simon, being led by avarice, were persuaded by money from certain ones who were in the towers. And accepting seventy thousand didrachmas, they allowed certain ones to flee.21Así que fue informado de esto el Macabeo, congregados los príncipes del pueblo, acusó a aquellos de haber vendido por dinero a sus hermanos, dejando escapar a sus enemigos. But when what was done had been reported to Maccabeus, gathering together the leaders of the people, he accused those who had sold their brothers for money, having sent away their adversaries.22Por lo cual hizo quitar la vida a dichos traidores; y al instante se apoderó de los dos castillos. Therefore, he executed these who had acted as traitors, and he quickly captured the two towers.23Y saliendo todo tan felizmente como correspondía al valor de sus armas, mató en las dos fortalezas más de veinte mil hombres. And so, having success in arms and in all things that he took in hand, he destroyed more than twenty thousand in the two fortresses.24Timoteo, empero, que antes había sido vencido por los judíos, habiendo levantado un ejército de tropas extranjeras, y reunido la caballería de Asia, vino a Judea como para apoderarse de ella a fuerza de armas. And Timothy, who had been overcome by the Jews before, calling together a multitude of foreign troops and gathering horsemen from Asia, arrived as if he would capture Judea with arms.25Mas al mismo tiempo que se iba acercando Timoteo, el Macabeo y su gente oraban al Señor, cubiertas de polvo sus cabezas, ceñidos con el cilicio sus lomos, But Maccabeus, and those who were with him, as he was approaching, beseeched the Lord, sprinkling dirt on their heads and wrapping their waists with haircloth.26y postrados al pie del altar, a fin de que les fuese propicio, y se mostrase enemigo de sus enemigos, y contrario de sus contrarios, como lo dice la Ley. And lying prostrate at the pedestal of the altar, they beseeched him to be forgiving to them, but to be an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries, just as the law says.27Y de este modo acabada la oración, habiendo tomado las armas, y saliendo a una distancia considerable de la ciudad, cercanos ya a los enemigos, hicieron alto. And so, after prayer, taking up arms, they proceeded further from the city, and, reaching close proximity to the enemies, they settled in.28Apenas empezó a salir el sol, principió la batalla entre los dos ejércitos; teniendo los unos, además de su valor, al Señor por garantía de la victoria y del éxito feliz de sus armas, cuando los otros solamente contaban con su esfuerzo en el combate. But, as soon as the sun rose, both sides joined battle: these ones having the guarantee of victory and success by the strength of the Lord, yet the others having courage as their leader in battle.29Mas mientras se estaba en lo más recio de la batalla vieron los enemigos aparecer del cielo cinco varones montados en caballos adornados con frenos de oro, que servían de capitanes a los judíos. But, while they were fighting vehemently, to the adversaries there appeared from heaven five men on horses, which were adorned with bridles of gold, providing leadership to the Jews.30Dos de dichos varones, tomando en medio al Macabeo, le cubrían con sus armas, guardándole de recibir daño; pero lanzaban dardos y rayos contra los enemigos, quienes envueltos en oscuridad y confusión, y llenos de espanto, iban cayendo por tierra; Two of them, having Maccabeus in the middle and surrounding him with their weapons, kept him safe. But, at the enemy, they cast darts and lightning, so that they fell down, being both confused with blindness and filled with disturbances.31habiendo sido muertos veinte mil quinientos de a pie, y seiscientos de caballería. Moreover, there were slain twenty thousand five hundred, along with six hundred horsemen.32Timoteo se refugió en Gazara, plaza fuerte, cuyo gobernador era Quereas. In fact, Timothy fled away to Gazara, to a fortified stronghold, where Chaereas was in charge.33Mas llenos de gozo el Macabeo y sus tropas, tuvieron sitiada la plaza cuatro días. Then Maccabeus, and those who were with him, joyfully besieged the stronghold for four days.34Entretanto los sitiados, confiados en la fortaleza de la plaza, los insultaban de mil maneras, y vomitaban expresiones abominables. But those who were inside, trusting to the strength of the place, spoke evil without limit and cast out nefarious words.35Pero así que amaneció el quinto día, veinte jóvenes de los que estaban con el Macabeo, irritados con tales blasfemias, se acercaron valerosamente al muro, y con ánimo denodado subieron sobre él, But when the fifth day began to dawn, twenty youths of those who were with Maccabeus, inflamed in soul because of the blasphemy, manfully approached to the wall, and, advancing with fierce courage, ascended it.36y haciendo lo mismo otros, empezaron a pegar fuego a las torres y a las puertas, y quemaron vivos a aquellos blasfemos. Moreover, others also getting up after them, went to set fire to the towers and the gates, and to burn the blasphemers alive.37Dos días continuos estuvieron devastando la fortaleza; y habiendo encontrado a Timoteo, que se había escondido en cierto lugar, le mataron, así como también a Quereas, su hermano, y a Apolófanes. Then, having continued throughout two days to lay waste to the fortress, they killed Timothy, who was found hiding himself in a certain place. And they also killed his brother Chaereas, and Apollophanes.38Ejecutadas estas cosas bendijeron con himnos y cánticos al Señor, que hizo grandes cosas en Israel, y les había concedido la victoria. When this was done, they blessed the Lord with hymns and confessions, who had done great things in Israel and had given them the victory.
