2 Macabeos 11
1Pero poco tiempo después Lisias, ayo del rey y su pariente, que tenía el manejo de los negocios, sintiendo mucho pesar por lo que había acaecido, But a short time afterwards, Lysias, the procurator of the king and a near relative, who also was in charge of the government, was heavily weighed upon by what had happened.2juntó ochenta, mil hombres de a pie, y toda la caballería, y se dirigió contra los judíos con el designio de tomar la ciudad, y darla a los gentiles para que la poblasen, Gathering together eight thousand, along with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking that the city would certainly be captured, making it a dwelling place for the Gentiles,3y sacar del Templo grandes sumas de dinero, como de los otros templos de los paganos, y vender anualmente el Sumo Sacerdocio; in truth, also thinking to make a profit in money from the temple, just as from the other shrines of the Gentiles, and to put the priesthood up for sale every year.4sin reflexionar en el poder de Dios, sino confiando neciamente en su numerosa infantería, en los miles de caballos, y en ochenta elefantes. Never recognizing the power of God, but inflated in mind, he trusted in the multitude of the foot soldiers, and in the thousands of horsemen, and in the eighty elephants.5Y habiendo entrado en Judea, y acercándose a Betsura, situada en una garganta a cinco estadios de Jerusalén, atacó esta plaza. And so, he entered Judea, and, approaching Bethzur, which was in a narrow place, at an interval of five stadia from Jerusalem, he laid siege to that stronghold.6Pero luego que el Macabeo y su gente supieron que los enemigos habían comenzado a sitiar las fortalezas, rogaban al Señor con lágrimas y suspiros, a una con todo el pueblo, que enviase un Ángel bueno para que salvase a Israel. But when Maccabeus and those who were with him realized that the strongholds were besieged, they and all the crowd together petitioned the Lord with weeping and tears, that he would send a good Angel to save Israel.7El mismo Macabeo, tomando las armas el primero de todos, exhortó a los demás a exponerse como él a los peligros, a fin de socorrer a sus hermanos. And so the leader Maccabeus, taking up arms, exhorted the others, to undergo the peril together with him, and to bring assistance to their brothers.8Mientras que iban marchando todos con ánimo denodado, se les apareció, al salir de Jerusalén, un personaje a caballo, que iba vestido de blanco, con armas de oro, y blandiendo la lanza. And when they together were going forth with a ready spirit, there appeared at Jerusalem a horseman, preceding them in radiant clothing and with weapons of gold, waving a spear.9Entonces todos a una bendijeron al Señor misericordioso, y cobraron nuevo aliento, hallándose dispuestos a pelear, no solo contra los hombres, sino hasta contra las bestias más feroces, y a penetrar muros de hierro. Then they all together blessed the merciful Lord, and strengthened their souls, being prepared to break through not only men, but also the most ferocious beasts and walls of iron.10Caminaban con esto llenos de ardimiento, teniendo en su ayuda al Señor, que desde el cielo hacía resplandecer sobre ellos su misericordia. Thus, they went forth readily, having a helper from heaven, and with the Lord taking pity on them.11Así que, arrojándose impetuosamente como leones sobre el enemigo, mataron once mil de a pie, y mil seiscientos de a caballo; Then, rushing violently against the enemy, in the manner of lions, they struck down from among them: eleven thousand foot soldiers and one thousand six hundred horsemen.12y pusieron en fuga a todos los demás, la mayor parte de los cuales escaparon heridos y despojados, salvándose el mismo Lisias por medio de una vergonzosa fuga. And they turned all the rest to flight. But many of them, being wounded, escaped with nothing. And Lysias himself also escaped, fleeing in disgrace.13Y como no le faltaba talento, meditando para consigo la pérdida que había tenido, y conociendo que los hebreos eran invencibles cuando se apoyaban en el socorro del Dios Todopoderoso, les envió comisionados; And because he was not irrational, thinking to himself about the loss that had happened against him, and understanding the Hebrews to be invincible because they depend upon the help of Almighty God, he sent to them,14y les prometió condescender en todo aquello que fuese justo, y que persuadiría al rey que hiciese amistad con ellos. and he promised that he would agree to all things that are just, and that he would persuade the king to be their friend.15Asintió el Macabeo a la demanda de Lisias, atendiendo en todo a la utilidad pública; y en efecto, concedió el rey todo lo que había pedido Judas a favor de los judíos en la carta que escribió a Lisias. Then Maccabeus assented to the request of Lysias, considering it useful in every way. And whatever Maccabeus wrote to Lysias, concerning the Jews, the king consented to it.16La carta que Lisias escribió a los judíos era del tenor siguiente: For there were letters written to the Jews from Lysias, which, indeed, were composed in this way: “Lysias, to the people of the Jews: greetings.17“Lisias al pueblo de los judíos, salud. John and Absalom, who had been sent from you to deliver your writings, requested that I would implement these things that were signified by them.18Por tanto, expuse al rey todo lo que podía representársele, y ha otorgado cuanto le ha permitido el estado de los negocios. Therefore, whatever things could be brought before the king, I have presented them. And he has conceded to those things that are permitted.19Y si vosotros guardáis fidelidad en lo tratado, yo también procuraré en lo sucesivo proporcionaros el bien que pudiere. If, therefore, you will keep yourselves faithful in these matters, then, from now on, I will endeavor to be a cause of your good.20Por lo que hace a los demás asuntos, he encargado a vuestros diputados, y a los que yo envío, que de boca traten de cada uno de ellos con vosotros. But as for other particulars, I have given orders by word, both to these, and to those who have been sent by me, to confer with you.21Pasadlo bien. But the letter of the king contained this: “King Antiochus to Lysias, his brother: greetings.23Después que el rey, nuestro padre, fue trasladado entre los dioses, nos, deseando que nuestros súbditos vivan en paz, y puedan atender a sus negocios; Since our father has been transferred among the gods, we are willing that those who are in our kingdom should act without tumult, and should attend diligently to their own concerns.24y habiendo sabido que los judíos no condescendieron con mi padre en que abrazasen los ritos de los griegos, sino que han querido conservar sus costumbres, y por esta razón nos piden que les concedamos vivir según sus leyes; We have heard that the Jews would not consent to my father to convert to the rites of the Greeks, but that they chose to keep to their own institutions, and, because of this, that they ask of us to leave them to their own laws.25por tanto, queriendo nos que esta nación goce también de paz, hemos ordenado y decretado que se les restituya el Templo, a fin de que vivan según las costumbres de sus mayores. Therefore, wanting this nation, likewise, to be at rest, we have reached a judgment that the temple should be restored to them, so that they may act according to the custom of their ancestors.26En esta conformidad harás bien en enviarles comisionados para hacer con ellos la paz, a fin de que enterados de nuestra voluntad cobren buen ánimo y se apliquen a sus intereses particulares.” You will do well, therefore, if you send to them and grant them a pledge, so that our will becomes known, and they may be of good courage, and may look after their own needs.”27La carta del rey a los judíos era del tenor siguiente: “El rey Antíoco al senado de los judíos, y a todos los demás judíos, salud. Truly, the letter of the king to the Jews was such as this: “King Antiochus to the senate of the Jews, and to the rest of the Jews: greetings.28Si estáis buenos, esto es lo que os deseamos. Por lo que hace a nos, lo pasamos bien. If you are well, such is what we desire. But we ourselves are also well.29Menelao ha venido a nos para hacernos presente que deseáis venir a tratar con los de vuestra nación que están con nosotros. But the Romans also now sent a letter, having this in it: “Quintus Memmius and Titus Manilius, ambassadors of the Romans, to the people of the Jews: greetings.35Las cosas que os ha concedido Lisias, pariente del rey, os las concedemos igualmente nosotros. Concerning these things that Lysias, the relative of the king, has conceded to you, we also have conceded.36Y por lo que hace a las otras, sobre las cuales juzgó Lisias deber consultar al rey, enviad cuanto antes alguno, después que hayáis conferenciado entre vosotros, a fin de que resolvamos lo que os sea más ventajoso; pues estamos para marchar hacia Antioquía. But about such things as he judged should be referred to the king, send someone, as soon as you have diligently conferred among yourselves, so that we may make a decree, just as it is agreeable to you. For we are going to Antioch.37Daos, pues, prisa a responder, para que sepamos de este modo lo que deseáis.
