2 Macabeos 13
1El año ciento cuarenta y nueve supo Judas que Antíoco Eupator venía con un grande ejército contra Judea, In the one hundred and forty-ninth year, Judas realized that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a multitude against Judea.2acompañado de Lisias, tutor y regente del reino, y que traía consigo ciento diez mil hombres de a pie, y cinco mil de a caballo, y veintidós elefantes y trescientos carros armados de hoces. And with him was Lysias, the procurator, who was in charge of the government, having with him one hundred and ten thousand foot soldiers, five thousand horsemen, and twenty-two elephants, and three hundred swift chariots with curved blades.3Se agregó también a ellos Menelao; y con grande y falaz artificio procuraba aplacar a Antíoco, no porque amase el bien de la patria, sino esperando ser puesto en posesión del principado. Menelaus also joined himself to them, and with many lies he pleaded with Antiochus, not for the welfare of his country, but hoping that he would be appointed as first ruler.4Mas el Rey de los reyes movió el corazón de Antíoco contra aquel malvado; y habiendo dicho Lisias que él era la causa de todos los males, mandó prenderle, y que le quitasen la vida en aquel mismo lugar, según el uso de ellos. But the King of kings awakened the mind of Antiochus against the sinner. And when Lysias was suggesting this to be the cause of all the evils, he ordered (as is the custom with them) that he should be apprehended and killed in the same place.5Había, en aquel sitio una torre de cincuenta codos de alto, rodeada por todas partes de un gran montón de cenizas; desde allí no se veía más que un precipicio. Now there was, in the same place, a tower of fifty cubits, having a pile of ashes on every side. This had a lookout over a precipice.6Y mandó que desde la torre fuese arrojado en la ceniza aquel sacrílego, llevándole todos a empellones a la muerte. From there, he ordered this sacrilegious one to be thrown down into the ashes, with all propelling him into the afterlife.7De este modo debió morir Menelao, prevaricador de la Ley, sin que a su cuerpo se le diese sepultura. And by such a law, it turned out that the betrayer of the law, Menelaus, died, not having so much as a burial in the earth.8Y a la verdad, con mucha justicia; porque habiendo él cometido tantos delitos contra el altar de Dios, cuyo fuego y ceniza son cosas santas, fue condenado a morir en la ceniza. And indeed, this satisfied justice, for just as he had committed many offenses toward the altar of God, the fire and ashes of which are holy, so was he condemned to die in ashes.9El rey, empero, continuaba furibundo su marcha, con ánimo de mostrarse con los judíos más cruel que su padre. But the king, with his mind being unbridled, came to reveal himself as more wicked to the Jews than his father was.10Teniendo Judas noticia de ello, mandó al pueblo que invocase al Señor día y noche, a fin de que les asistiese en aquella ocasión, como lo había hecho siempre; When Judas understood this, he instructed the people to call upon the Lord day and night, so that, just as always, now also he would help them.11pues temían el verse privados de su Ley, de su patria y de su santo Templo; y para que no permitiese que su pueblo, que poco antes había empezado a respirar algún tanto, se viese nuevamente subyugado por las naciones blasfemas. Of course, they were afraid to be deprived of their law and their country, and of the holy temple, and also that he might allow the people, who had recently taken a breath for a little while, to be again subdued by blasphemous nations.12En efecto, haciendo todos lo mandado, implorando la misericordia del Señor con lágrimas y ayunos, postrados en tierra por espacio de tres días continuos, los exhortó Judas a que estuviesen apercibidos. And so, having together done all these things, and having sought mercy from the Lord with weeping and fasting, lying prostrate on the ground continually for three days, Judas exhorted them to prepare themselves.13Él, luego, con el consejo de los ancianos resolvió salir a campaña antes que el rey entrase con su ejército en Judea y se apoderase de la ciudad, y encomendar al Señor el éxito de la empresa. In truth, with the elders he decided that, before the king could move his army into Judea and obtain the city, they would go out and commit the outcome of the event to the judgment of the Lord.14Entregándose, enteramente a las disposiciones de Dios, Creador del universo, y habiendo exhortado a sus tropas a pelear varonilmente y hasta perder la vida en defensa de sus leyes, del Templo, de la ciudad, de la patria y de sus conciudadanos, hizo acampar el ejército en las cercanías de Modín. And so, giving everything to God, the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his own to contend with fortitude and to stand up, even unto death, for the laws, the temple, the city, their country and the citizens: he positioned his army around Modin.15Dio después a los suyos por señal: “La victoria de Dios”; y tomando consigo los jóvenes más valientes, asaltó de noche el cuartel del rey, y mató en su campamento cuatro mil hombres, y al mayor de los elefantes, con toda la gente que llevaba encima. And having given his own a sign of the victory of God, he attacked the quarters of the king by night, with the strongest chosen young men, and he slew four thousand men in the camp, and the greatest of the elephants, along with those who would have been positioned on them.16Y llenando con esto de un grande terror y confusión el campo de los enemigos, concluida tan felizmente la empresa, se retiraron. And so, having filled the camp of their enemies with the greatest fear and disturbance, they went away with good success.17Se ejecutó todo esto al rayar el día, asistiendo el Señor al Macabeo con su protección. Now this was done at the first light of day, with the Lord assisting and protecting them.18Mas el rey, visto este ensayo de la audacia de los judíos, intentó apoderarse con arte de los lugares más fortificados; But the king, having received a taste of the audacity of the Jews, attempted to take the difficult places by craftiness.19y se acercó con su ejército a Betsura, una de las plazas de los judíos más bien fortificadas; pero era rechazado, hallaba mil tropiezos y perdía gente. And so, he moved his camp to Bethzur, which was a fortified garrison of the Jews. But as he struck, he was put to flight and reduced in number.20Entretanto Judas enviaba a los sitiados cuanto necesitaban. Then Judas sent necessities to those who were inside.21En esto un tal Rodoco hacía de espía de los enemigos en el ejército de los judíos; pero siendo reconocido, fue preso y puesto en un encierro. But Rhodocus, a certain one from the Jewish army, reported the secrets to the enemies, so he was sought out, apprehended, and imprisoned.22Nuevamente parlamentó el rey con los habitantes de Betsura, les concedió la paz, aprobó la capitulación de los sitiados, y se marchó. Again, the king held talks with those who were in Bethzur. He gave his right hand as a pledge, and accepted theirs, and he went away.23Peleó entonces con Judas y quedó vencido. A esta sazón, teniendo aviso de que en Antioquía se le había rebelado Filipo, el cual había quedado con el gobierno de los negocios, consternado su ánimo, suplicando y humillándose ante los judíos, juró guardarles todo lo que pareció justo; y después de esta reconciliación ofreció un sacrificio, tributó honor al Templo y le hizo varios donativos. He joined battle with Judas; he was overcome. But when he realized that Philip, who had been left out of these events, had rebelled at Antioch, he was in a consternation of mind, and, begging the Jews, and being submissive to them, he swore to all things that seemed just. And, being reconciled, he offered sacrifice, honored the temple, and left gifts.24Y abrazó al Macabeo, declarándole gobernador y príncipe desde Tolemaida hasta los gerrenos. He embraced Maccabeus, and he made him commander and leader from Ptolemais all the way to the Gerrenians.25Luego que Antíoco llegó a Tolemaida, dieron a conocer sus habitantes el grave disgusto que les había causado aquel tratado y amistad hecha con los judíos, amenazando que indignados rompiesen la alianza. But when he arrived at Ptolemais, the Ptolemaians considered the conditions of the alliance burdensome, being indignant lest perhaps they might break the pact.26Pero subiendo Lisias a la tribuna, expuso las razones y apaciguó al pueblo, y se volvió después a Antioquía. Tal fue la expedición del rey y el fin que tuvo. Then Lysias went up to the tribunal, and explained the reasons, and calmed the people, and so he returned to Antioch. And this is the way things went concerning the journey and return of the king.
