2 Macabeos 2
1Se lee en los escritos del profeta Jeremías, cómo mandó él a los que eran conducidos al cautiverio que tomasen el fuego del modo que queda referido, y cómo prescribió varias cosas a aquellos que eran llevados cautivos. Now it is found in the descriptions of the prophet Jeremiah that he ordered those who transmigrated to take the fire, just as it was signified and as he ordered, into the transmigration.2Les dio asimismo la Ley, para que no se olvidasen de los mandamientos del Señor, y no se pervirtiesen sus corazones con la vista de los ídolos de oro y plata y de su pompa. And he gave them the law, so that they would never forget the commandments of the Lord, and so that they would not go astray in their minds, seeing the idols of gold and silver, and their ornaments.3Y añadiéndoles otros varios avisos, los exhortó a que jamás apartasen de su corazón la Ley. And in this manner, with other sayings, he exhorted them, lest they remove the law from their heart.4También se leía en aquella escritura que este profeta, por una orden expresa que recibió de Dios, mandó llevar consigo el Tabernáculo y el Arca, hasta que llegó a aquel monte, al cual subió Moisés, y desde donde vio la herencia de Dios; Furthermore, it was in the same writing, how the prophet, by divine response, ordered that the tabernacle and the ark be made to accompany him, until he exited from the mountain, where Moses ascended and saw the inheritance of God.5y que habiendo llegado allí Jeremías, halló una cueva, donde metió el Tabernáculo, y el Arca, y el altar del incienso, tapando la entrada; And arriving there, Jeremiah found a place in a cave. And he brought both the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense into that place, and he obstructed the opening.6y algunos de aquellos que le seguían se acercaron para dejar notado este lugar, pero no pudieron hallarlo. And certain ones of those who followed him, approached to make note of the location, but they were not able to find it.7Lo que sabido por Jeremías, los reprendió, y les dijo: “Este lugar permanecerá ignorado hasta tanto que Dios congregue todo el pueblo, y use con el de misericordia; But when Jeremiah knew of it, he blamed them, saying: “The place shall be unknown, until God shall gather together the congregation of the people, and until he may be favorably inclined.8entonces el Señor manifestará estas cosas, y aparecerá la majestad del Señor, y se verá la nube que veía Moisés, y cual se dejó ver cuando Salomón pidió que fuese santificado el Templo para el gran Dios. And then the Lord will reveal these things, and the majesty of the Lord shall appear, and there will be a cloud, just as it was also manifested to Moses, and just as he manifested these when Solomon petitioned that the place should be sanctified to the great God.9Porque dio grandes muestras de su sabiduría; y estando lleno de ella, ofreció el sacrificio de la dedicación y santificación del Templo. For he also drew upon wisdom magnificently, and so, having wisdom, he offered the sacrifice of the dedication and the consummation of the temple.10Y así como Moisés hizo oración al Señor, y bajó fuego del cielo y consumió el holocausto, así también oró Salomón, y bajó fuego del cielo, y consumió el holocausto. And, just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire descended from heaven and consumed the holocaust, so also Solomon prayed and fire descended from heaven and consumed the holocaust.11Y dijo Moisés: Por no haber sido comida la hostia ofrecida por el pecado, por eso ha sido consumida. And Moses said that it was consumed because the sin offering was not eaten.12Celebró igualmente Salomón, por espacio de ocho días la dedicación. And similarly, Solomon also celebrated the eight days of the dedication.13Estas mismas noticias se encontraron también anotadas en los escritos y comentarios de Nehemías, donde se lee que el formó una biblioteca, habiendo recogido de varias regiones los libros de los profetas, los de David, y las cartas de los reyes, y lo concerniente a sus donativos. Moreover, these same things were put into the descriptions and commentaries of Nehemiah, including how, when constructing a library, he gathered together from the regions the books of the Prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings, and from the holy gifts.14A este modo recogió también Judas todo cuanto se había perdido durante la guerra que sufrimos; todo lo cual se conserva en nuestro poder. And, similarly, Judas also gathered together all the things that were destroyed by the war that befell us, and these are with us.15Si vosotros deseáis tener estos escritos, enviad personas que puedan llevároslos. Therefore, if you desire these things, send those who may carry them to you.16Y estando ahora para celebrar la fiesta de la Purificación, os hemos dado aviso de ello; y así haréis bien si celebrareis estos días. And so, since we will be celebrating the purification, we wrote to you. Therefore, you will do well, if you keep these days.17Entretanto esperamos que Dios, que ha libertado a su pueblo, que ha vuelto a todos su herencia, que ha restablecido el reino y el sacerdocio, y el Santuario, But we hope that God, who has freed his people and has rendered to all the inheritance, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and sanctification,18conforme lo había prometido en la Ley, se apiadará bien presto de nosotros, y nos reunirá de todas las partes del mundo en el lugar santo; just as he promised in the law, will quickly have mercy on us and will gather us together from under heaven into the holy place.19puesto que nos ha sacado de grandes peligros, y ha purificado el Templo. For he has rescued us from great perils, and he has purged the place.20Por lo que mira a Judas Macabeo y a sus hermanos, y a la purificación del gran Templo, y a la dedicación del altar, The truth about Judas Maccabeus, and his brothers, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,21así como a lo que toca a las guerras que hubo en tiempo de Antíoco el ilustre, y en las de su hijo Eupator, and also about the battles, which pertain to Antiochus the illustrious, and his son, Eupator,22y a las señales que aparecieron en el aire a favor de los que combatían valerosamente por la nación judía, de tal suerte que, siendo en corto número, defendieron todo el país, y pusieron en fuga la muchedumbre de bárbaros, and about the illuminations, which came from heaven to those who acted on behalf of the Jews with fortitude, was such that they, though few, vindicated the entire region and put to flight a multitude of the barbarous,23recobrando el Templo más célebre que hay en el mundo, y librando la ciudad, y restableciendo la observancia de las leyes, las cuales se hallaban abolidas, habiéndoles favorecido el Señor con toda suerte de prosperidades; and recovered the most famous temple in the whole world, and freed the city, and restored the laws that were abolished. For the Lord, with all tranquility, was acting favorably toward them.24estas cosas que escribió en cinco libros Jasón de Cirene, hemos procurado nosotros compendiarlas en un solo volumen. And similar things as have been comprised in five books by Jason the Cyrenean, we have attempted to abridge into one volume.25Pues considerando la multitud de libros, y la dificultad que acarrea la multiplicidad de noticias a los que desean internarse en las narraciones históricas, For, considering the multitude of the books, and the difficulty that those who are willing to undertake the narrations of histories find, due to the multitude of events,26hemos procurado que los que quisieren leerlas, hallen placer en su corazón, y que los aplicados puedan más fácilmente retenerlas en su memoria, y sean útiles a todos los que las leyeren. we have taken care, so that, indeed, those who are willing to read may have delights of the mind, and so that, in truth, the studious may more easily be able to commit it to memory, and also so that all readers may find it useful.27Y a la verdad, habiéndonos empeñado en hacer este compendio, no hemos emprendido una obra de poca dificultad, sino un trabajo que pide grande aplicación y sudor. And indeed, we ourselves, who have taken up the task of abridging this work, have no easy labor. For, in truth, more correctly, we have assumed an activity full of vigilance and sweat.28Emprendemos de buena gana esta tarea por la utilidad que de ella resultará a muchos; a semejanza de aquellos que teniendo a su cargo el preparar un convite, se dedican del todo a satisfacer el gusto de los convidados. Just as those who prepare a feast also seek to be attentive to the will of others, for the sake of the gratitude of many, we willingly undertake the labor.29La verdad de los hechos que se refieren va sobre la fe de los autores que los escribieron; pues por lo que hace a nosotros, trabajaremos solamente en compendiarlos conforme al designio que nos hemos propuesto. Indeed, leaving to the authors the truths about particular details, we instead have been devoted to this form, striving to be brief.30Y a la manera que un arquitecto que emprende edificar una casa nueva, debe cuidar de toda la fábrica; y aquel que la pinta, ha de buscar las cosas que son a propósito para su ornato; del mismo modo se debe juzgar de nosotros. For, just as the architect of a new house will have concern for the entire structure, and, in truth, he who takes care to paint it will seek out what is fitting to adorn it, so also should such things be considered by us.31En efecto al autor de una historia atañe el recoger los materiales, y ordenar la narración, inquiriendo cuidadosamente las circunstancias particulares de lo que cuenta; Moreover, to collect knowledge, and to order words, and to discuss every particular point attentively, is the duty of the author of a history.32mas al que compendia se le debe permitir que use un estilo conciso, y que evite el extenderse en largos discursos. Yet truly, to pursue brevity of speech, and to shun the extension of matters, is conceded to an abbreviator.33Basta ya de exordio, y empecemos nuestra narración; porque no sería cordura prolongar el discurso preliminar a la historia, y abreviar después el cuerpo de ella. Therefore, here we will begin the narration. Let so much be sufficient to say in preface. For it is foolish to go on and on before the account, when the account itself is succinct.
