1En el tiempo que la Ciudad Santa gozaba de una plena paz, y que las leyes se observaban muy exactamente por la piedad del pontífice Onías, y el odio que tenía a la maldad; Therefore, when the holy city was inhabited with all peace, and also the laws were still being kept very well because of the piety of Onias, the high priest, and the hatred that his soul held for evil,2nacía de esto que aun los mismos reyes y príncipes honraban sumamente aquel lugar, y enriquecían el Templo con grandes dones; it happened that even the kings and princes themselves considered the place worthy of the highest honor, and so they glorified the temple with very great gifts,3de manera que Seleuco, rey de Asia, costeaba de sus rentas todos los gastos que se hacían en los sacrificios. so much so that Seleucus, king of Asia, furnished from his revenues all of the expenses for the ministry pertaining to the sacrifices.4En medio de esto, Simón, de la tribu de Benjamín, y creado prefecto del Templo, maquinaba con ansia hacer algún mal en esta ciudad; pero se le oponía el Sumo Sacerdote. But Simon, from the tribe of Benjamin, having been appointed as overseer of the temple, obstructed the chief priest, in order to undertake some kind of iniquity in the city.5Viendo que no podía vencer a Onías, pasó a verse con Apolonio, hijo de Tarseas, que en aquella sazón era gobernador de Celesiria y de Fenicia, But when he was not able to overcome Onias, he went to Apollonius, the son of Tarsus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia,6y le contó que el erario de Jerusalén estaba lleno de inmensas sumas de dinero, y de riquezas en general, las cuales no servían para los gastos de los sacrificios; y que se podría hallar medio para que todo entrase en poder del rey. and he announced to him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of innumerable sums of money, and that the common storehouse, which did not pertain to the allotment for the sacrifices, was immense, and that it would be possible for all of this to fall under the power of the king.7Habiendo Apolonio dado cuenta al rey respecto del dinero que a él le había sido denunciado, llamó el rey a Heliodoro, su ministro de hacienda, y le envió con orden de transportar todo el dinero referido. And when he had presented the news that he brought back to king Apollonius about the money, he summoned Heliodorus, who was in charge of this matter, and he sent him with orders, in order to transport the aforesaid money.8Heliodoro se puso luego en camino con el pretexto de ir a recorrer las ciudades de Celesiria y Fenicia, mas en realidad para poner en ejecución el designio del rey. And immediately Heliodorus set forth on the way, indeed, appearing as if sojourning to the cities of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in truth the reason was to complete the proposition of the king.9Habiendo llegado a Jerusalén, y sido bien recibido en la ciudad por el Sumo Sacerdote, le declaró a este la denuncia que le había sido hecha de aquellas riquezas, y le manifestó que este era el motivo de su viaje; preguntándole luego si verdaderamente era la cosa como se le dijo. But, when he had arrived at Jerusalem and had been kindly accepted into the city by the high priest, he explained to him the information that had been provided concerning the money. And he freely disclosed the cause for which he was present. But he questioned whether these things were truly so.10Entonces el Sumo Sacerdote le representó que aquellos eran unos depósitos y alimentos de viudas y huérfanos; Then the high priest revealed to him that these things had been deposited, along with provisions for the widows and the orphans.11y que entre lo que había denunciado el impío Simón había una parte que era de Hircano Tobías, varón muy eminente, y que el todo eran cuatrocientos talentos de plata, y doscientos de oro; In truth, a certain part of that which impious Simon had reported belonged to Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a very eminent man. But the entire amount was four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold.12que por otra parte de ningún modo se podía defraudar a aquellos que habían depositado sus caudales en un lugar y templo honrado y venerado como sagrado por todo el universo. For in truth, to deceive those who had trusted in the place and the temple that is honored throughout the whole world for its veneration and sanctity would be altogether impossible.13Mas Heliodoro, insistiendo en las órdenes que llevaba del rey, repuso que de todos modos se había de llevar al rey aquel tesoro. But because of those things that he held as orders from the king, he said that by all means the money must be transferred to the king.14En efecto, en el día señalado entró Heliodoro para ejecutar su designio, con lo cual se llenó de consternación toda la ciudad. And so, on the appointed day, Heliodorus entered to set these things in order. Yet truly, there was no small amount of trepidation throughout the entire city.15Y los sacerdotes, revestidos con las vestiduras sacerdotales, se postraron por tierra ante el altar, e invocaban a Aquel que está en el cielo, y que puso la ley acerca de los depósitos, suplicándole que los conservase salvos para los depositadores. And so the priests threw themselves before the altar in their priestly vestments, and they called upon him from heaven, who had established the law about deposits, such that those with whom they had deposited it would keep it safe.16Ninguno podía mirar el rostro del Sumo Sacerdote sin que su corazón quedase traspasado de aflicción; porque su semblante y color demudado manifestaban el interno dolor de su ánimo. Now truly, whoever saw the countenance of the high priest was wounded in mind. For his face and the changing of its color declared the inner sorrow of the soul.17La tristeza esparcida por todo su rostro, y un temblor que se había apoderado de todo su cuerpo, mostraban bien a los que le miraban, la pena de su corazón. For this one man was so immersed in grief and in physical dread that it was clear to those who beheld him that sorrow had affected his heart.18Salían al mismo tiempo muchos a tropel de sus casas, pidiendo con públicas rogativas que (Dios) no permitiese que aquel lugar quedase expuesto al desprecio. And now, others flowed together in flocks from the houses, pleading and making public supplication, on behalf of the place, which soon might be brought into contempt.19Las mujeres, ceñidas hasta el pecho de cilicios, andaban en tropas por las calles; y hasta las doncellas mismas, que antes se quedaban en casa, corrían unas adonde estaba Onías, otras hacia las murallas, y algunas otras estaban mirando desde las ventanas; And the women, wrapped with haircloth around the chest, flowed together through the streets. And even the virgins, who were cloistered, rushed forth to Onias, and others rushed to the walls, and, truly, certain ones looked through the windows.20pero todas levantando al cielo sus manos, dirigían allí sus plegarias. But every one of them, stretching forth their hands toward heaven, made supplication.21A la verdad, era un espectáculo digno de compasión el ver aquella confusa turba de gente, y al Sumo Sacerdote puesto en tan grande conflicto. For the expectation of the mixed multitude, and of the great priest in agony, would have endowed anyone with pity.22Mientras tanto estos por su parte invocaban al Dios Todopoderoso para que conservase intacto el depósito de aquellos que se lo habían confiado. And indeed, these called upon almighty God, so that the trust that had been entrusted to them would be preserved with all integrity.23Heliodoro no pensaba en otra cosa que en ejecutar su designio; y para ello se había presentado ya él mismo con sus guardias a la puerta del erario. But Heliodorus completed the same thing that had been decreed, being himself present in the place, with his attendants, near the treasury.24Mas el espíritu del Dios todopoderoso se hizo allí manifiesto con señales bien patentes, en tal conformidad, que derribados en tierra por una virtud divina cuantos habían osado obedecer a Heliodoro, quedaron como yertos y despavoridos. Then the Spirit of Almighty God made a great manifestation of his presence, so much so that all who had presumed to yield to him were turned aside by fainting and dread, falling by the power of God.25Porque se les apareció montado en un caballo un personaje de fulminante aspecto, y magníficamente vestido, cuyas armas parecían de oro, el cual acometiendo con ímpetu a Heliodoro le pateó con los pies delanteros del caballo. For there appeared to them a certain horse, having a terrible rider, adorned with the best covering, and he rushed forth and assailed Heliodorus with his front hooves. And he who sat upon him seemed to have armor of gold.26Se aparecieron también otros dos gallardos y robustos jóvenes llenos de majestad, y ricamente vestidos, los cuales poniéndose uno a cada lado de Heliodoro, empezaron a azotarle cada uno por su parte, descargando sobre él continuos golpes. Moreover, there appeared two other youths with the appearance of power, the glory of nobility, and the apparel of splendor. These stood near him on each side, and they scourged him without ceasing, striking with many scourges.27Con esto, Heliodoro cayó luego por tierra envuelto en oscuridad y tinieblas; y habiéndole tomado y puesto en una silla de manos, le sacaron de allí. Then Heliodorus suddenly fell to the ground, and they quickly took him up, draped by a great darkness, and, having placed him onto a stretcher, they rushed him away.28De esta suerte, aquel que había entrado en el erario con tanto aparato de guardias y ministros, era llevado sin que nadie pudiese valerle; habiéndose manifestado visiblemente el poder de Dios. And so, he who had approached the aforesaid treasury, with so many officials and attendants, was carried away, with no one to bring help to him, the manifest power of God being made known.29Por un efecto del divino poder, Heliodoro yacía sin habla, y sin ninguna esperanza de vida. And indeed, through divine power, he lay mute and also was deprived of all hope of recovery.30Por el contrario, los otros bendecían al Señor, porque había ensalzado con esto la gloria de su lugar; y el Templo que poco antes estaba lleno de confusión y temor, se llenó de alegría y regocijo luego que hizo ver el Señor su omnipotencia. But they blessed the Lord, because he had magnified his place, and because the temple, which a little while before was filled with confusion and fear, became filled with joy and gladness, when the all-powerful Lord appeared.31Entonces algunos amigos de Heliodoro rogaron con insistencia a Onías que invocase al Altísimo, a fin de que concediese la vida a Heliodoro, reducido ya a los últimos alientos. Then, truly, certain friends of Heliodorus came forth to petition Onias, so that he would call upon the Most High to grant life to him who was appointed to breathe his last breath.32El Sumo Sacerdote, considerando que quizá el rey podría sospechar que los judíos habían urdido alguna trama contra Heliodoro, ofreció una víctima de salud por su curación, But the high priest, considering that the king might perhaps suspect that some malice against Heliodorus had been completed by the Jews, offered a beneficial sacrifice for the health of the man.33y al tiempo que el Sumo Sacerdote estaba haciendo la súplica, aquellos mismos jóvenes, con las mismas vestiduras, poniéndose junto a Heliodoro, le dijeron: “Dale las gracias al sacerdote Onías, pues por amor de él te concede el Señor la vida. And when the high priest was praying, the same youths, dressed in the same clothing, were standing by Heliodorus, and they said: “Give thanks to Onias the priest, for it is on his behalf that the Lord has granted life to you.34Y habiendo tú sido castigado por Dios, anuncia a todo el mundo sus maravillas y su poder”. Dicho esto desaparecieron. But, having been scourged by God, you must announce to all the great things of God and his power.” And having said this, they disappeared.35En efecto, Heliodoro, habiendo ofrecido un sacrificio a Dios, y hecho grandes votos a Aquel que le había concedido la vida, y dadas las gracias a Onías, recogiendo su gente se volvió para el rey. Then Heliodorus offered sacrifice to God and made great vows to him who had permitted him to live. And he gave thanks to Onias. And, gathering his troops, he returned to the king.36Y atestiguaba a todo el mundo las obras del gran Dios, que había visto él con sus propios ojos. But he testified to all about the works of the great God, which he had seen with his own eyes.37Y como el rey preguntase a Heliodoro quién sería bueno para ir de nuevo a Jerusalén contestó: And so, when the king questioned Heliodorus as to who might be fit to be sent once more to Jerusalem, he said:38“Si tú tienes algún enemigo o quien atente contra tu reino, envíale allá, y le verás volver desgarrado a azotes, si es que escapare con vida; porque no se puede dudar que reside en aquel lugar una cierta virtud divina. “If you have any enemy, or a traitor to your kingdom, send him there, and he will return to you scourged, if he even escapes. For truly, in that place, there is a certain power of God.39Pues Aquel mismo que tiene su morada en los cielos, está presente y protege aquel lugar, y castiga y hace perecer a los que van a hacer allí algún mal”. Yes, he who has his dwelling in the heavens is the visitor and protector of that place, and he strikes and destroys those arriving to do evil.”40Esto es, en suma, lo que pasó a Heliodoro, y el modo con que se conservó el tesoro. Thus, the things about Heliodorus and the preservation of the treasury happened in this way.
