1Mas el mencionado Simón, que en daño de la patria había denunciado aquel tesoro, hablaba mal de Onías, como si este hubiese instigado a Heliodoro a hacer tales cosas, y sido el autor de aquellos males; But the aforementioned Simon, who was a betrayer of the money and of his nation, spoke evil about Onias, as if he had instigated Heliodorus to do these things and as if he had been the inciter of evils.2y al protector de la ciudad, al defensor de su nación, al celador de la Ley de Dios, tenía el atrevimiento de llamarle traidor del reino. And he dared to say that he was a traitor to the kingdom, though he provided for the city, and defended his people, and was zealous for the law of God.3Mas como estas enemistades pasasen a tal extremo, que se cometían hasta asesinatos por algunos amigos de Simón; But when the hostilities had proceeded to such an extent that even murders were committed by certain close associates of Simon,4considerando Onías los peligros de la discordia, y que Apolonio, gobernador de Celesiria y de Fenicia atizaba con su furor la malignidad de Simón, Onias, considering the peril of this contention, and Apollonius to be mad, though he was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, which only augmented the malice of Simon, he brought himself before the king,5se fue a presentar al rey, no para acusar a sus conciudadanos, sino únicamente con el fin de atender al bien de todo su pueblo, que era lo que él se proponía; not so as to be an accuser of a citizen, but in view of his own consideration for the common good of the entire multitude.6pues estaba viendo que era imposible el pacificar los ánimos, ni el contener la locura de Simón, sin una providencia de rey. For he saw that, without royal providence, it would be impossible to provide peace to events, nor would Simon ever cease from his foolishness.7Mas después de la muerte de Seleuco, habiéndole sucedido en el reino Antíoco, llamado el ilustre, Jasón, hermano de Onías, aspiraba al pontificado. But after the life of Seleucus expired, when Antiochus, who was called the illustrious, had assumed the kingdom, Jason, the brother of Onias, was ambitious for the high priesthood.8Pasó a presentarse al rey, y le prometió trescientos sesenta talentos de plata, y otros ochenta talentos por otros títulos; He went to the king, promising him three hundred and sixty talents of silver, and from other revenues eighty talents,9con más otros ciento cincuenta que ofrecía dar si se le concedía facultad de establecer un gimnasio, y una efebia, y el que los moradores de Jerusalén gozasen del derecho de que gozaban los ciudadanos de Antioquía. and beyond these, he promised also one hundred and fifty more, if he would be granted the authority to establish a sports arena, and a school for boys, and to enroll those who were at Jerusalem as Antiochians.10Habiendole otorgado el rey lo que pedía, y obtenido el principado, comenzó al instante a hacer tomar a sus paisanos los usos y costumbres de los gentiles. When the king had assented, and he had obtained the leadership, he immediately began to transfer his subjects to the rituals of the heathens.11Y desterrando la manera de vivir, que los reyes por un efecto de su bondad a favor de los judíos habían aprobado, mediante los oficios de Juan, padre de Eupólemo, el que fue enviado de embajador a los romanos para renovar la amistad y alianza, establecía Jasón leyes perversas, trastornando los derechos legítimos de los ciudadanos. And taking away those things that had been established by the kings, by reason of the humanitarianism of the Jews, through John, the father of Eupolemus, who formed a friendship and alliance with the Romans, he discharged the legitimate legislations, voiding the oaths of the citizens, and he sanctioned depraved customs.12Pues tuvo el atrevimiento de establecer bajo el alcázar mismo, un gimnasio, y de exponer en lugares infames la flor de la juventud; For he even had the audacity to set up, below the very stronghold, a sports arena, and to place all of the best adolescent boys in brothels.13siendo esto no un principio, sino un progreso y consumación de la vida pagana y extranjera, introducida con detestable e inaudita maldad por el no sacerdote e impío Jasón. Now this was not the beginning, but a certain increase and progression of heathenism and foreign practices, due to the nefarious and unheard of wickedness of the impious non-priest Jason,14Llegó la cosa a tal estado, que los sacerdotes no se aplicaban ya al ministerio del altar, sino que despreciando el Templo y los sacrificios, corrían a la palestra, y a los premios indignos, y a ejercitarse en el disco. so much so that now the priests were not devoted to the concerns of services at the altar, but, despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, they hurried to become participants of the wrestling school, and of its prohibited injustices, and of the training of the discus.15Reputando en nada los honores patrios, apreciaban más las glorias de Grecia; And, even holding the honors of their fathers to be nothing, they esteemed the glories of the Greeks as best.16por cuya adquisición se excitaba entre ellos una peligrosa emulación; de suerte que hacían alarde de imitar los usos de los griegos, y de parecer semejantes a aquellos mismos que habían sido sus mortales enemigos. For the sake of these, they held a dangerous competition, and were imitators of their practices, and so, in all things, they desired to be similar to those who had been their enemies and destroyers.17Pero el obrar impíamente contra las leyes de Dios no queda sin castigo, como se verá en los tiempos siguientes. But acting impiously against the divine laws does not go unpunished, as these subsequent events will reveal.18Como se celebrasen en Tiro los juegos de cada cinco años, y el rey estuviese presente, But when the competition that was celebrated every fifth year was at Tyre, the king being present,19envió el malvado Jasón desde Jerusalén unos hombres perversos a llevar trescientas didracmas para el sacrificio de Hércules. Mas los mismos que las llevaron pidieron que no se expendiesen en los sacrificios, por no ser conveniente tal aplicación, sino que se empleasen en otros objetos. the villainous Jason sent sinful men from Jerusalem, carrying three hundred didrachmas of silver for the sacrifice of Hercules. But those who transported it asked that it might not be paid out for the sacrifices, because it was not needed, but might be used for other expenses.20Y así, aunque el donador de estas dracmas las había ofrecido para el sacrificio de Hércules, las emplearon, a instancias de los conductores, en la construcción de galeras. So, even though this was offered by him who sent it for the sacrifice of Hercules, it was instead given over to the manufacture of Greek warships, because of those presenting it.21Mas Antíoco, habiendo enviado a Egipto a Apolonio, hijo de Mnesteo, a tratar con los grandes de la corte del rey Ptolomeo Filometor, luego que vio que le impedía en el manejo de los negocios de su reino, atendiendo solo a sus propios intereses, partió de allí, y se vino a Jope; desde dónde pasó a Jerusalén, Then Apollonius, the son of Menestheus, was sent into Egypt because of the nobles of king Philometor of Ptolemy. But when Antiochus realized that he had been effectively alienated from the affairs of the kingdom, consulting his own interests, he started out from there and came to Joppa, and from there to Jerusalem.22y recibido con toda pompa por Jasón y por la ciudad, hizo su entrada en ella en medio de luminarias y aclamaciones; y desde allí volvió a Fenicia con su ejército. And he was received magnificently by Jason and the city, and he entered with the lights of little torches and with praises. And from there he turned back with his army to Phoenicia.23Tres años después envió Jasón a Menelao, hermano del mencionado Simón, a llevar dinero al rey, y a recibir órdenes de este sobre negocios de importancia. And, after three years, Jason sent Menelaus, the brother of the above mentioned Simon, carrying money to the king, and bearing responses about essential matters.24Mas habiéndose granjeado Menelao la voluntad del rey, porque supo lisonjearle ensalzando la grandeza de su poder, se alzó con el Sumo Sacerdocio, dando trescientos talentos de plata más de lo que daba Jasón. And he, being recommended to the king, when he had magnified the appearance of his power, usurped the high priesthood for himself, outbidding Jason by three hundred talents of silver.25Y recibidas las órdenes del rey, se volvió. And so, having received orders from the king, he returned, holding nothing at all worthy of the priesthood, in truth, having the soul of a cruel tyrant and the rage of a wild beast.26De esta suerte Jasón, que había vendido a su propio hermano, engañado ahora él mismo, huyó como desterrado al país de los ammonitas. And indeed, Jason, who had taken captive his own brother, was himself deceived, and was expelled to become a fugitive in the region of the Ammonites.27Menelao, empero, así que obtuvo el principado, no se cuidó de enviar al rey el dinero que le había prometido; no obstante que Sóstrato, comandante del alcázar, le estrechaba al pago, Then Menelaus, indeed, obtained the principality, but truly, concerning the money that he had promised to the king, nothing was done. Although Sostratus, who was first over the stronghold, attempted to collect it,28pues estaba a cargo de este la cobranza de los tributos. Por cuya causa fueron citados ambos a comparecer ante el rey. since the collection of certain taxes pertained to him. For this reason, they were both called before the king.29Y Menelao fue depuesto del pontificado, sucediéndole su hermano Lisímaco; y a Sóstrato le dieron el gobierno de Chipre. And Menelaus was removed from the priesthood, being succeeded by Lysimachus, his brother. Then Sostratus was appointed over the Cyprians.30Mientras que sucedían estas cosas, los de Tarso y de Malo excitaron una sedición, porque habían sido donados a Antioquide, concubina del rey. And while these things were occurring, it happened that those from Tarsus and Mallus incited a sedition, because they had been given as a gift to Antiochidi, the concubine of the king.31Con este motivo pasó el rey allá apresuradamente a fin de apaciguarlos, dejando por su lugarteniente a Andrónico, uno de sus amigos. And so, the king hurried to come and calm them, leaving behind Andronicus, one of his associates, as his deputy.32Menelao, entonces, creyendo que la ocasión era oportuna, hurtando del Templo algunos vasos de oro, dio una parte de ellos a Andrónico, y vendió la otra en Tiro, y en las ciudades comarcanas. Then Menelaus, believing that he had reached an opportune time, having stolen certain gold vessels out of the temple, gave them to Andronicus, along with others he had gained at Tyre and throughout the neighboring cities.33Lo que sabido con certeza por Onías, le reprendió por esta acción desde un sitio de Antioquía, cercano a Dafne, donde se hallaba refugiado. But when Onias had realized this with certainty, he accused him, keeping himself in a safe place at Antioch beside Daphne.34Por esta causa pasó Menelao a ver a Andrónico y le rogó que hiciese matar a Onías. Andrónico fue a visitar a Onías; y habiéndole alargado su mano derecha, y jurado, le persuadió (a pesar de que no se fiaba de él) a que saliese del asilo; más al punto que salió le quitó la vida, sin tener ningún miramiento a la justicia. Meanwhile, Menelaus met with Andronicus, asking him to execute Onias. So he then went to Onias, and he gave him his right hand with an oath, and, even though he was suspicious of him, he persuaded him to venture out of asylum, and he immediately killed him, with no respect for justice.35Con cuyo motivo, no solamente los judíos, sino también las demás naciones se irritaron, y llevaron muy a mal la injusta muerte de un tan grande varón. For this reason, not only the Jews, but also the other nations, were indignant and bore much grief for the unjust killing of so great a man.36Y así, habiendo el rey vuelto de Cilicia, se le presentaron en Antioquía los judíos y los mismos griegos a querellarse de la inicua muerte de Onías. But when the king returned from the places of Cilicia, the Jews at Antioch, and similarly the Greeks, went to him, complaining of the iniquitous killing of Onias.37Y Antíoco, afligido en su corazón, y enternecido por la muerte de Onías, prorrumpió en llanto, acordándose de la moderación y modestia del difunto; And so Antiochus was grieved in his mind because of Onias, and, being moved to compassion, he shed tears, remembering the sobriety and modesty of the deceased.38y encendiéndose en cólera, mandó que Andrónico, despojado de la púrpura, fuese paseado por toda la ciudad; y que en el mismo lugar en que este sacrílego había cometido tal impiedad contra Onías, allí mismo se le quitase la vida. Así le dio el Señor el merecido castigo. And, being inflamed in soul, he ordered the purple to be torn from Andronicus, and that he be led around, throughout the entire city, and that, in the same place where he had committed the impiety against Onias, the sacrilegious man should be deprived of his life, as his fitting punishment rendered by the Lord.39Por lo que hace a Lisímaco, habiendo cometido muchos sacrilegios en el Templo a instigación de Menelao, y esparcida la fama del mucho oro que de allí había sacado, se sublevó el pueblo contra él. But when many sacrileges were committed by Lysimachus in the temple through the counsel of Menelaus, and the news was divulged, the multitude gathered together against Lysimachus, though a great quantity of gold had been exported already.40Y amotinándose las gentes, y encendidos en cólera los ánimos, Lisímaco, armando como unos tres mil hombres, capitaneados por un cierto Tirano, tan consumado en malicia, como avanzado en edad, empezó a cometer violencias. But when the multitude stirred up an insurrection, and their minds were filled with anger, Lysimachus armed about three thousand, who began to act with hands of iniquity. A certain tyrant was their leader, a man advanced both in age and in madness.41Mas luego que fueron conocidos los intentos de Lisímaco, unos se armaron de piedras, otros de gruesos garrotes, y otros arrojaron sobre él ceniza. But when they perceived the attempt of Lysimachus, some took hold of stones, others strong clubs, and, in truth, certain ones threw ashes upon Lysimachus.42De cuyas resultas muchos quedaron heridos, algunos quedaron muertos, y todos los restantes fueron puestos en fuga, perdiendo también la vida, junto al erario, el mismo sacrílego. And indeed, many were wounded, and some were struck down; however, all were put to flight. And, as for the sacrilegious man, they executed him beside the treasury.43De todos estos desórdenes comenzó a acusarse a Menelao. Therefore, about these things, a judgment began to be stirred up against Menelaus.44Y habiendo llegado el rey a Tiro, pasaron a darle quejas sobre estos sucesos, tres diputados enviados por los ancianos. And when the king had arrived at Tyre, three men were sent from the elders to bring the matter to him.45Pero Menelao, conociendo que iba a ser vencido, prometió a Ptolomeo una grande suma de dinero, con tal que inclinase al rey en su favor. But when Menelaus was overcome, he promised to give much money to Ptolemy to persuade the king.46En efecto, Ptolomeo entró a ver al rey, que estaba tomando el fresco en una galería, y le hizo mudar de parecer; And so, Ptolemy went to the king in a certain court where he was, as if merely to refresh himself, and he influenced him away from the sentence.47de tal suerte, que Menelao, reo de toda maldad, fue absuelto de sus delitos; y a aquellos infelices, que en un tribunal, aunque fuese de escitas, hubieran sido declarados inocentes, los condenó a muerte. And so Menelaus, though indeed guilty of all malice, was absolved of the crimes. Moreover, these pitiable men, who, even if they had pleaded their case before Scythians, would have been judged innocent, he condemned to death.48Fueron castigados inmediatamente, contra toda justicia, aquellos que habían sostenido la causa del pueblo y de la ciudad, y la veneración de los vasos sagrados. Therefore, those who brought the case on behalf of the city, and the people, and the sacred vessels were quickly given an unjust punishment.49Pero los mismos vecinos de Tiro, indignados de semejante acción, se mostraron sumamente generosos en la honrosa sepultura que les dieron. For this reason, even the Tyrians, being indignant, proved to be very liberal toward their burial.50Entretanto, Menelao conservaba la autoridad, por medio de la avaricia de aquellos que tenían el poder, y crecía en malicia para daño de sus conciudadanos. Thus, because of the greed of those who were in power, Menelaus remained in authority, increasing in malice, to the betrayal of the citizens.
