At the same time, Antiochus prepared for a second journey into Egypt.2Y sucedió entonces, que por espacio de cuarenta días se vieron en toda la ciudad de Jerusalén correr de parte a parte por el aire hombres a caballo, vestidos de telas de oro, y armados de lanzas, como si fuesen escuadrones de caballería; But it happened, throughout the entire city of Jerusalem, that there were seen, for forty days, horsemen rushing through the air, having golden robes, and armed with spears, like a cohort of soldiers,3y caballos, ordenados en filas, que corriendo se atacaban unos a otros, y movimiento de broqueles, y una multitud de gentes armadas con morriones y espadas desnudas, y tiros de dardos, y el resplandor de armas doradas y de todo género de corazas. and horses, set in order by ranks, running, coming together to engage in close combat, and the shaking of shields, and a helmeted multitude stretching forth swords, and the casting of darts, and the splendor of golden armor, and all kinds of breastplates.4Por tanto, rogaban todos que tales prodigios tornasen en bien. Because of this, everyone begged that these prodigies might be turned to good.5Mas habiéndose esparcido el falso rumor de que Antíoco había muerto, tomando Jasón consigo mil hombres, acometió de improviso a la dudad, y aunque los ciudadanos acudieron al instante a las murallas, al fin aquellos se apoderaron de ellas, y Menelao huyó al alcázar. But when a false rumor went out, as though the life of Antiochus had expired, Jason, taking with him no less than one thousand men, suddenly assaulted the city. And, though the citizens together rushed to the wall, the city at last was taken, and Menelaus fled into the stronghold.6Pero Jasón, como si creyese ganar un triunfo sobre sus enemigos y no sobre sus ciudadanos, hizo una horrible carnicería en la ciudad, no parando la consideración en que es un gravísimo mal ser feliz en la guerra que se hace a los de su propia sangre. Truly, Jason did not spare his citizens from the slaughter; not realizing that success at the expense of kin is a very great evil, he considered those over whom he was victorious to be enemies, and not citizens.7Esto, no obstante, no pudo conseguir ponerse en posesión del principado; antes bien, todo el fruto que sacó de sus traiciones, fue la propia ignominia; y viéndose precisado nuevamente a huir, se retiró al país de los ammonitas. And so, he certainly did not obtain the leadership, but truly, in the end, received confusion for his betrayals, and he departed again to take refuge among the Ammonites.8Finalmente, fue puesto en prisión por Aretas, rey de los árabes, que quería acabar con él; y habiéndose podido escapar, andaba de ciudad en ciudad, aborrecido de todo el mundo; y como prevaricador de las leyes, y como un hombre execrable, y enemigo de la patria y de los ciudadanos, fue arrojado a Egipto. In the end, to his ruin, he was enclosed by Aretas, the sovereign of the Arabs. And then, fleeing from city to city, hated by all as a detestable fugitive from the laws, and as an enemy of his own nation and citizens, he was expelled into Egypt.9Y de esta suerte aquel que había arrojado a muchos fuera de su patria, murió desterrado de ella, habiéndose ido a Lacedemonia, creyendo que allí, encontraría algún refugio a título de parentesco; And he who had expelled many from their native land perished abroad, starting out toward the Lacedaemonians, as if, for the sake of kinship, he should have refuge there.10y el que había mandado arrojar los cadáveres de muchas personas sin darles sepultura, fue arrojado insepulto, y sin ser llorado de nadie, no habiendo podido hallar sepulcro ni en su tierra propia, ni en la extraña. And he who cast out many, unburied, was himself also cast out, both unlamented and unburied, and without having use of either foreign burial or a share of the sepulcher of his fathers.11Pasadas así estas cosas, entró el rey en sospecha de que los judíos iban a abandonar la alianza que tenían con él; y así, partiendo de Egipto, lleno de furor; se apoderó de la ciudad a mano armada, And so, when these things were done, the king suspected that the Jews would desert the alliance. And because of this, departing from Egypt with a raging soul, he indeed took the city by force.12y mandó a los soldados que matasen indistintamente a cuantos encontrasen, sin perdonar a nadie, y que entrando también por las casas, pasasen a cuchillo toda la gente; Moreover, he ordered the military to execute, and not to spare, anyone they met, and to ascend through the houses to slay.13de manera que se hizo una carnicería general de jóvenes y de ancianos, y de mujeres con sus hijos, y de doncellas y de niños; Therefore, a massacre occurred of youths and elders, an extermination of women and children, a killing of virgins and little ones.14tanto, que en el espacio de aquellos tres días fueron ochenta mil los muertos, cuarenta mil los cautivos, y otros tantos los vendidos. And so, over three whole days, eighty thousand were executed, forty thousand were imprisoned, and no small number were sold.15Mas ni aun con esto quedó satisfecho Antíoco; sino que además cometió el arrojo de entrar en el Templo, lugar el más santo de toda la tierra, conducido por Menelao, traidor a la patria y a las leyes; But, as if this were not enough, he even presumed to enter into the most holy temple in the entire world, with Menelaus, that traitor to the law and to his own nation, as his guide.16y tomando con sus sacrílegas manos los vasos sagrados, que otros reyes y ciudades habían puesto allí para ornamento y gloria de aquel lugar, los manoseaba de una manera indigna, y los profanaba. And, taking in his wicked hands the holy vessels, which were given by other kings and cities for the adornment and glory of the place, he unworthily handled and contaminated them.17Así Antíoco, perdida toda la luz de su entendimiento, no veía que si Dios mostraba por un poco de tiempo su indignación contra los habitantes de la ciudad, era por causa de los pecados de ellos; y que por lo mismo había experimentado semejante profanación aquel lugar. So Antiochus, having gone astray in mind, did not consider that, because of the sins of the inhabitants of the city, God had become angry for a while, and so, for this reason, contempt had fallen upon the place.18Porque de otra suerte, si no hubieran estado envueltos en muchos delitos, este príncipe, como le sucedió a Heliodoro, enviado del rey Seleuco para saquear el tesoro, hubiera sido azotado luego que llegó, y precisado a desistir de su temeraria empresa. Otherwise, if it had not happened that they were involved in so many sins, as with Heliodorus, who was sent by king Seleucus to plunder the treasury, so also this one, as soon as he had arrived, certainly would have been scourged and driven away from his audacity.19Mas Dios no escogió el pueblo por amor del lugar, sino a este por amor del pueblo. Truly, God did not choose the people because of the place, but the place because of the people.20Por cuyo motivo este lugar mismo ha participado de los males que han acaecido al pueblo, así como tendrá también parte en los bienes; y el que ahora se ve abandonado por efecto de la indignación del Dios todopoderoso, será nuevamente ensalzado a la mayor gloria, aplacado que esté aquel grande Señor. And therefore, the place itself also became a participant in the evils of the people. But afterwards, it shall be a companion to what is good. And she who was abandoned to the wrath of Almighty God shall be exalted again with the greatest glory, at the reconciliation of the great Lord.21Habiendo Antíoco sacado del Templo mil ochocientos talentos, se volvió apresuradamente a Antioquía, dominado de tal manera de la soberbia y presunción de ánimo, que se imaginaba poder llegar a navegar sobre la tierra, y a caminar sobre el mar a pie. Therefore, when Antiochus had taken away from the temple one thousand eight hundred talents, he quickly returned to Antioch, thinking, in his arrogance, to navigate the earth, even by finding a passage leading across the open ocean: such was the elation of his mind.22Pero dejó allí gobernadores para que vejasen a la nación; a saber, en Jerusalén, a Filipo, originario de Frigia, aún más cruel que su amo; Yet he left behind rulers to afflict the people. In fact, at Jerusalem, Philip was by birth a Phrygian, but he was in manners more cruel than he who had appointed him.23y en Garizim, a Andrónico y a Menelao, más encarnizados aún que los otros contra los ciudadanos. Yet Andronicus and Menelaus hung a heavier weight over the citizens at Garizim than the others.24Y siguiendo muy enconado contra los judíos, envió por comandante al detestable Apolonio con un ejército de veintidós mil hombres, con orden de degollar a todos los adultos, y de vender las mujeres y niños. And when he had been appointed over the Jews, he sent that hateful leader, Apollonius, with an army of twenty-two thousand, instructing him to execute all men in the prime of life, and to sell the women and the youths.25LIegado este a Jerusalén aparentando paz, se estuvo quieto hasta el santo día del sábado; mas en este día en que los judíos observaban el descanso, mandó a sus tropas que tomasen las armas, When he had arrived at Jerusalem, feigning peace, he remained quiet until the holy day of the Sabbath. And then, when the Jews were taking rest, he instructed his own to take up arms.26y mató a todos los que se habían reunido para ver aquel espectáculo; y discurriendo después por toda la ciudad con sus soldados, quitó la vida a una gran multitud de gentes. And he slaughtered all those who were seen going out. And rushing throughout the city with armed men, he destroyed a vast multitude.27Pero Judas Macabeo, que era uno de los diez que se habían retirado a un lugar desierto, pasaba la vida con los suyos en los montes, entre las fieras, alimentándose de yerbas, a fin de no tener parte en las profanaciones. But Judas Maccabeus, who was the tenth, had withdrawn himself to a deserted place, and there he lived life among the wild beasts in the mountains, with his own. And they remained there, consuming herbs as food, lest they be partakers in the defilement.
