2 Macabeos 8
1Entretanto, Judas Macabeo y los que le seguían entraban secretamente en las poblaciones, y convocando a sus parientes y amigos, y tomando consigo a los que habían permanecido firmes en la religión judía, juntaron hasta seis mil hombres. In truth, Judas Maccabeus, and those who were with him, went secretly into the villages, and, calling together their relatives and friends, and accepting among them those who persevered in Judaism, they brought six thousand men together.2Al mismo tiempo invocaban al Señor para que mirase propicio a su pueblo, hollado de todos, y que tuviese compasión de su Templo, el cual se veía profanado por los impíos; And they called upon the Lord: to look upon his people, who were downtrodden by all; and to take pity on the temple, which was defiled by the impious;3que se apiadase igualmente de la ruina de la ciudad, que iba a ser destruida y luego después arrasada, y escuchase la voz de la sangre derramada, que le estaba pidiendo venganza. and even to take pity on the city by utter destruction, for it was willing to be immediately leveled to the ground; and to hear the voice of the blood that was crying out to him,4Que tuviese también presente las inicuas muertes de los inocentes niños, y las blasfemias proferidas contra su nombre, y tomase de ello venganza. so that he would remember also the most iniquitous deaths of the innocent little ones, and the blasphemies brought upon his name; and to show his indignation over these things.5El Macabeo habiendo juntado mucha gente, se hacía formidable a los gentiles; porque la indignación del Señor se había convertido en misericordia. And so Maccabeus, having gathered together a multitude, could not be withstood by the Gentiles. For the wrath of the Lord had turned into mercy.6Se arrojaba repentinamente sobre los lugares y ciudades, y los incendiaba, y ocupando los sitios más ventajosos, hacía no pequeño estrago en los enemigos. And so, overwhelming the towns and cities unexpectedly, he set them on fire. And, occupying strategic positions, he made no small slaughter of the enemies.7Ejecutaba estas correrías principalmente por la noche; y la fama de su valor se esparcía por todas partes. Moreover, especially in the nights, he carried out expeditions in this way. And the fame of his virtuous strength was spread abroad everywhere.8Viendo Filipo que este caudillo iba poco a poco haciendo progresos, y que las más de las veces le salían bien sus empresas, escribió a Ptolomeo, gobernador de Celesiria y de Fenicia, a fin de que le enviara socorros para sostener el partido del rey. Then Philip, seeing that the man gained ground little by little, and that things frequently fell out in his favor, wrote to Ptolemy, governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, to send auxiliaries to carry out the work of the king.9En efecto, Ptolomeo le envió al punto a Nicanor, amigo suyo, hijo de Patroclo, y uno de los principales magnates, dándole hasta veinte mil hombres armados, de diversas naciones, para que exterminase todo el linaje de los judíos; y junto con él envió también a Gorgias, que era gran soldado, y hombre de larga experiencia en las cosas de la guerra. And so, he quickly sent Nicanor, son of Patroclus, from his foremost friends, providing him with no less than twenty thousand armed men from throughout the Gentiles, to wipe out the entire race of the Jews, joining with him Gorgias, a military man with very great experience in the things of warfare.10Nicanor pensó pagar el tributo de los dos mil talentos que el rey debía dar a los romanos, sacándolos de la venta de los cautivos que haría de los judíos. Moreover, Nicanor decided to raise a tribute for the king of two thousand talents, which was to be given to the Romans, and which would be supplied by means of the captivity of the Jews.11Con esta idea envió inmediatamente a las ciudades marítimas a convidar a la compra de judíos esclavos, prometiendo dar noventa de ellos por un talento; sin reflexionar el castigo que el Todopoderoso había de ejecutar en él. And immediately he sent to the maritime cities, calling them to the auction of the Jewish slaves, promising them a parcel of ninety slaves for one talent, not reflecting on the vengeance which would befall him subsequently from the Almighty.12Luego que Judas supo la venida de Nicanor, la participó a los judíos que tenía consigo; Then, when Judas learned that Nicanor was approaching, he revealed it to those Jews who were with him.13algunos de los cuales, por falta de confianza en la justicia divina, llenos de miedo, echaron a huir; And certain ones among them, being afraid and not trusting in the justice of God, turned and fled away.14pero otros vendían cuanto les había quedado, y a una rogaban al Señor que los librase del impío Nicanor, que aun antes de haberse acercado a ellos los tenía ya vendidos; In truth, others sold all that was in excess, and together beseeched the Lord, that he would rescue them from the impious Nicanor, who had sold them before he even came near them,15y que se dignase hacerlo, ya que no por amor de ellos, siquiera por la Alianza que había hecho con sus padres, y por el honor que tenían de llamarse con el nombre santo y glorioso de pueblo de Dios. and if not for their sakes, then for the sake of the covenant which was made with their fathers, and for the sake of the invocation of his holy and magnificent name over them.16Habiendo convocado el Macabeo los siete mil hombres que le seguían, les conjuró que no entrasen en composición con los enemigos, y que no temiesen aquella muchedumbre que venía a atacarlos injustamente, sino que peleasen, con esfuerzo; But Maccabeus, calling together seven thousand who were with him, asked them not to be reconciled to the enemies, and not to fear the multitude of the enemies who came against them unjustly, but to struggle with fortitude,17teniendo siempre presente el ultraje que aquellos indignos habían cometido contra el lugar santo, y las injurias e insultos hechos a la ciudad, y además la abolición de las instituciones de sus mayores. holding before their eyes the contempt that had been brought upon the holy place by them, and likewise also the mockery which they held to the injury of the city, even to the extent of overthrowing the institutions of old.18Estas gentes, añadió, confían solo en sus armas y en su audacia; mas nosotros tenemos puesta nuestra confianza en el Señor Todopoderoso, que con una mirada puede trastornar no solo a los que vienen contra nosotros, sino también al mundo entero. For he said that these, indeed, trust in their weapons, as well as in their boldness; but we trust in the Almighty Lord, who is able to wipe out both those coming against us, and even the whole world, with one nod.19Asimismo les trajo a la memoria los socorros que había dado Dios a sus padres, y los ciento ochenta y cinco mil que perecieron del ejército de Senaquerib; Moreover, he reminded them also of the assistance of God which their parents had received; and how, under Sennacherib, one hundred and eighty-five thousand had perished;20como también la batalla que ellos habían dado a los gálatas en Babilonia, en la cual, no habiendo osado entrar en la acción sus aliados los macedonios, ellos, que solo eran seis mil, mataron ciento veinte mil, mediante el auxilio que les dio el cielo; y consiguieron en recompensa grandes bienes. and of the battle by them, which was against the Galatians in Babylonia, how, when the event had arrived and the allies of the Macedonians hesitated, though they were only six thousand in all, yet they slew one hundred and twenty thousand, because of the help provided to them from heaven; and how, for the sake of these things, very many benefits followed.21Este razonamiento los llenó de valor, de suerte que se hallaron dispuestos a morir por las leyes y por la patria. By these words, they were brought to constancy and were prepared to die for the laws and their nation.22En seguida dio el mando de una porción de tropas a sus hermanos Simón, José y Jonatás, poniendo a las órdenes de cada uno mil quinientos hombres. And so, he appointed his brothers as leaders over each division: Simon, and Joseph, and Jonathan, subjecting one thousand and five hundred men to each of them.23Además de eso, Esdras les leyó el libro santo; y habiéndoles dado por señal: Socorro de Dios, se puso él mismo a la cabeza del ejército, y marchó contra Nicanor. And at that point, the holy book having been read to them by Esdras, and having given them a sign of the assistance of God, with himself leading the first point, he joined battle with Nicanor.24En efecto, declarándose el Todopoderoso a favor de ellos, mataron más de nueve mil hombres, y pusieron en fuga la mayor parte del ejército de Nicanor, que quedó muy disminuido por razón de los muchos heridos. And, with the Almighty as their helper, they slew over nine thousand men. Furthermore, having wounded and disabled the greater part of the army of Nicanor, they forced them to take flight.25Con esto tomaron el dinero de aquellos que habían acudido para comprarlos; y fueron persiguiendo largo trecho al enemigo. In fact, they took away the money from those who came to buy them, and they pursued them everywhere.26Pero estrechados del tiempo volvieron atrás, pues era la víspera del sábado; lo cual les impidió que continuaran la persecución. But they turned back at the close of the hour, for it was before the Sabbath. For this reason, they did not continue the pursuit.27Recogidas las armas y despojos de los enemigos, celebraron el sábado, bendiciendo al Señor, que los había librado en aquel día, derramando sobre ellos como las primeras gotas del rocío de su misericordia. But, having gathered together their weapons and spoils, they kept the Sabbath, blessing the Lord who had delivered them in that day, showering the beginning of mercy on them.28Pasado el sábado, dieron parte de los despojos a los enfermos, a los huérfanos y a las viudas, quedándose con el resto para sí y para sus familias. In truth, after the Sabbath, they divided the spoils to the disabled, and the orphans, and the widows, and the remainder they kept for themselves and their own.29Ejecutadas estas cosas, hicieron todos juntos oración, rogando al Señor misericordioso que se aplacase para siempre con sus siervos. And so, when these things were done, and supplication was made by all in common, they asked the merciful Lord to be reconciled to his servants unto the end.30Y habiendo sido acometidos del ejército de Timoteo y de Báquides, mataron de él a más de veinte mil hombres, se apoderaron de varias plazas fuertes, y recogieron un botín muy grande; del cual dieron igual porción a los enfermos, a los huérfanos y a las viudas, y también a los viejos. And, among those who were fighting against them with Timothy and Bacchides, they slew more than twenty thousand, and they obtained the high fortresses, and they divided many spoils, making equal portions for the disabled, the fatherless, and the widows, and even the aged.31Recogidas luego con diligencia todas las armas de los enemigos, las depositaron en lugares convenientes, llevando a Jerusalén los otros despojos. And when they had carefully collected their weapons, they stored them all in strategic places, and, in truth, the remainder of the spoils they carried to Jerusalem.32Asimismo quitaron la vida a Filarco, hombre perverso, uno de los que acompañaban a Timoteo, y que había causado muchos males a los judíos. And they put to death Philarches, a wicked man, who was with Timothy, who had brought many afflictions upon the Jews.33Y cuando estaban en Jerusalén dando gracias por esta victoria, al saber que aquel Calístenes, que había incendiado las puertas sagradas, se había refugiado en cierta casa, le abrasaron en ella, dándole así el justo pago de sus impiedades. And when they celebrated the song of victory at Jerusalem, they burned him who had set fire to the sacred doors, that is, Callisthenes, when he had taken refuge in a certain house, repaying him a worthy reward for his impieties.34Entretanto el perversísimo Nicanor, aquel que había hecho venir a mil negociantes para venderles los judíos, But as for that most vicious Nicanor, who had led in a thousand merchants for the sale of the Jews,35humillado con la ayuda del Señor por aquellos mismos a quienes él había reputado por nada, dejando su brillante vestido, y huyendo por el Mediterráneo, llegó solo a Antioquía, y reducido al colmo de la infelicidad por la pérdida de su ejército. he was brought low with the help of the Lord, and by those whom he considered to be worthless. Putting aside the glorious vestments, fleeing by an inland route, he arrived alone at Antioch, having been brought to the greatest unhappiness by the destruction of his army.36Y aquel mismo que antes había prometido pagar el tributo a los romanos con los cautivos de Jerusalén, iba publicando ahora que los judíos tenían por protector a Dios, y que eran invulnerables, porque seguían las leyes que el mismo Señor les había dado. And he who had promised to pay a tribute to the Romans from the captives of Jerusalem, now professed that the Jews had God as their protector, and, for this reason, they were invulnerable, because they followed the laws established by him.
