1A este tiempo volvió Antíoco ignominiosamente de Persia; At the same time, Antiochus returned in dishonor from Persia.2pues habiendo entrado en la ciudad de Persépolis, e intentado saquear el templo y oprimir la ciudad, corrió todo el pueblo a tomar las armas, y le puso en fuga con todas sus tropas, por lo cual volvió atrás vergonzosamente. For he had entered into the city called Persepolis, and attempted to rob the temple, and to oppress the city, but the multitude, rushing to arms, turned them to flight, and so it happened that Antiochus, after fleeing, returned in disgrace.3Y llegado que hubo cerca de Ecbátana, recibió la noticia de lo que había sucedido a Nicanor y a Timoteo. And when he had arrived near Ecbatana, he realized what had happened to Nicanor and Timothy.4Con lo que montando en cólera, pensó desfogarla en los judíos, y vengarse así del ultraje que le habían hecho los que le obligaron a huir. And so, rising up in anger, he thought to turn back upon the Jews the injury done by those who had put him to flight. And, therefore, he ordered his chariot to be driven without stopping along the way, for the judgment of heaven was urging him on, because he had spoken so arrogantly about how he would come to Jerusalem and make it into a mass grave for the Jews.5Mas el Señor Dios de Israel, que ve todas las cosas, le hirió con una llaga interior e incurable. Pues apenas había acabado de pronunciar dichas palabras, le acometió un acerbo dolor de entrañas, y un terrible cólico; But the Lord God of Israel, who oversees all things, struck him with an incurable and invisible plague. For, as soon as he had finished these words, a dire pain in his abdomen seized him, with bitter internal torments.6y a la verdad que bien lo merecía, puesto que él había desgarrado las entrañas de otros con muchas y nuevas maneras de tormentos. Mas no por eso desistía de sus malvados designios. And, indeed, it sprung forth justly, since he had tormented the internal organs of others with many strange and new tortures, yet he in no way ceased from his malice.7De esta suerte, lleno de soberbia, respirando su corazón llamas contra los judíos, y mandando acelerar el viaje, sucedió que, corriendo furiosamente, cayó de la carroza, y con el grande golpe que recibió, se le quebrantaron los miembros del cuerpo. But, beyond this, being filled with arrogance, breathing fire with his soul against the Jews, and instructing the task to be accelerated, it happened that, as he was rushing on forcefully, he fell from the chariot, and his limbs were afflicted with a serious bruising of the body.8Y aquel que lleno de soberbia quería levantarse sobre la esfera de hombre, y se lisonjeaba de poder mandar aun a las olas del mar, y de pesar en una balanza los montes más elevados, humillado ahora hasta el suelo, era conducido en una silla de manos, presentando en su misma persona un manifiesto testimonio del poder de Dios. And he, being filled with arrogance beyond human means, seemed to himself to command even the waves of the sea and to weigh even the heights of the mountains in a balance. But now, humbled to the ground, he was carried on a stretcher, calling himself as a witness to the manifest virtue of God.9Pues hervía de gusanos el cuerpo de este impío, y aun viviendo se le caían a pedazos las carnes en medio de los dolores, y ni sus tropas podían sufrir el mal olor y fetidez que de sí despedía. So then, worms swarmed from his impious body, and, as he lived on in pain, his flesh fell away, and then his odorous stench oppressed the army.10Así el que poco antes se imaginaba que podría alcanzar con la mano las estrellas del cielo, se hizo insoportable a todos, por lo intolerable del hedor. And him who, a little before, thought that he could touch the stars of heaven, no one could endure to carry, because of the intolerable stench.11Derribado de este modo de su extremada soberbia, comenzó a entrar en conocimiento de sí mismo, estimulado del azote de Dios, pues crecían por momentos sus dolores. And so, from then on, being led away from his heavy arrogance by the admonishment of a divine plague, he began to come to an understanding of himself, with his pains increasing through every moment.12Y como ni el mismo pudiese ya sufrir su hedor, dijo así: “Justo es que el hombre se sujete a Dios, y que un mortal no pretenda apostárselas a Dios”. And, when he could not even bear his own stench, he spoke in this way: “It is just to be subject to God, and a mortal should not consider himself equal to God.”13Mas este malvado rogaba al Señor, del cual no había de alcanzar misericordia; Then this wicked one prayed to the Lord, from whom, subsequently, there might be no mercy.14y siendo así que antes se apresuraba a ir a la ciudad para arrasarla, y hacer de ella un cementerio de cadáveres amontonados, ahora deseaba hacerla libre; And the city, to which he was going in haste to pull it down to the ground and to make it a mass grave, he now wanted to make free.15prometiendo asimismo igualar con los atenienses a estos mismos judíos, a quienes poco antes había juzgado indignos de sepultura, y les había dicho que los arrojaría a las aves de rapiña, y a las fieras, para que los despedazasen, y que acabaría hasta con los niños más pequeños. And the Jews, whom he had said he certainly did not consider worthy even to be buried, but would deliver them to be torn apart by birds and wild beasts, and would exterminate them with their little ones, he now promised to make equal with the Athenians.16Ofrecía también adornar con preciosos dones aquel Templo santo que antes había despojado, y aumentar el número de los vasos sagrados, y costear de sus rentas los gastos necesarios para los sacrificios; And even the holy temple, which before he had plundered, he would adorn with the best gifts, and increase the holy vessels, and pay out from his revenues the charges pertaining to the sacrifices.17y además de esto, hacerse él judío, e ir por todo el mundo ensalzando el poder de Dios. Beyond these things, he would even become a Jew himself, and would travel through every place on earth and declare the power of God.18Mas como no cesasen sus dolores, porque al fin había caído sobre él la justa venganza de Dios, perdida toda esperanza, escribió a los judíos una carta, en forma de súplica, del tenor siguiente: But, when his pains did not cease, (for the just judgment of God had overwhelmed him,) in despair he wrote to the Jews, in the manner of a supplication, a letter composed in this way:19“El rey y príncipe Antíoco, a los judíos, excelentes ciudadanos, mucha salud y bienestar, y toda prosperidad. “To the very good citizens of the Jews, Antiochus, king and ruler, wishes much health, and welfare, and happiness.20Si gozáis de salud, tanto vosotros como vuestros hijos, y si os sucede todo según lo deseáis, nosotros damos por ello muchas gracias. If you and your sons are faring well, and if everything is according to your will, we give very great thanks.21Hallándome yo al presente enfermo, y acordándome benignamente de vosotros, he juzgado necesario, en esta grave enfermedad que me ha acometido a mi regreso de Persia, atender al bien común, dando algunas disposiciones; And so, fixed in infirmity, yet kindly remembering you, I am returning from the places of Persia, and, having been seized by a serious infirmity, I considered it necessary to have a concern for the common good,22no porque desespere de mi salud, antes confío mucho que saldré de esta enfermedad. not despairing in myself, but having a great hope to escape the infirmity.23Mas considerando que también mi padre al tiempo que iba con su ejército por las provincias altas, declaró quién debía reinar después de su muerte, Moreover, considering that my father also, during the time that he led an army into the upper regions, revealed who would take up the leadership after him,24con el fin de que si sobreviniese alguna desgracia, o corriese alguna mala noticia, no se turbasen los habitantes de las provincias, sabiendo ya quién era el sucesor en el mando; so that, if anything contrary should occur, or any if difficulties should be reported, those who were in the regions, knowing to whom the whole matter had been bequeathed, would not be disturbed.25y considerando además que cada uno de los confinantes y poderosos vecinos está acechando ocasión favorable, y aguardando los sucesos, he designado por rey a mi hijo Antíoco, el mismo a quien yo muchas veces, al pasar a las provincias altas de mis reinos, recomendé a muchos de vosotros, y al cual he escrito lo que más abajo veréis. In addition to these things, considering that whichever are the nearest powers and neighbors lie in ambush for the right time and await the right event, I have designated my son, Antiochus, as king, whom I frequently commended to many of you while traveling in the upper provinces. And I have written to him what I have added below.26Por tanto, os ruego y pido que acordándoos de los beneficios que habéis recibido de mí en común y en particular, me guardéis todos fidelidad a mí y a mi hijo. And so, I beg you and petition you, that remembering the public and private benefits, each one will continue to be faithful to me and to my son.27Pues confío que él se portará con moderación y dulzura, y que siguiendo mis intenciones será vuestro favorecedor.” For I trust that he will behave with moderation and humanity, and that, following my intentions, he will be impartial to you.”28En fin, herido mortalmente este homicida y blasfemo, del mismo modo que él había tratado a otros, acabó su vida en los montes, lejos de su patria, con una muerte infeliz. And so the murderer and blasphemer, having been struck very badly, just as he himself had treated others, passed from this life in a miserable death on a journey among the mountains.29Filipo, su hermano de leche, hizo trasladar su cuerpo, y temiéndose del hijo de Antíoco, se fue para Egipto a Ptolomeo Filometor. But Philip, who was nurtured with him, carried away his body, and, fearing the son of Antiochus, went into Egypt to Ptolemy Philometor.
