1Carísimos, he aquí que os escribo esta segunda carta, y en ambas despierto la rectitud de vuestro espíritu con lo que os recuerdo, Consider, most beloved, this second epistle which I am writing to you, in which I stir up, by admonition, your sincere mind,2para que tengáis presentes las palabras predichas por los santos profetas y el mandato que el Señor y Salvador ha transmitido por vuestros apóstoles; so that you may be mindful of those words that I preached to you from the holy prophets, and of the precepts of the Apostles of your Lord and Savior.3sabiendo ante todo que en los últimos días vendrán impostores burlones que, mientras viven según sus propias concupiscencias, Know this first: that in the last days there will arrive deceitful mockers, walking according to their own desires,4dirán: “¿Dónde está la promesa de su Parusía? Pues desde que los padres se durmieron todo permanece lo mismo que desde el principio de la creación”. saying: “Where is his promise or his advent? For from the time that the fathers have slept, all things have continued just as they were from the beginning of creation.”5Se les escapa, porque así lo quieren, que hubo cielos desde antiguo y tierra sacada del agua y afirmada sobre el agua por la palabra de Dios; But they willfully ignore this: that the heavens existed first, and that the earth, from water and through water, was established by the Word of God.6y que por esto, el mundo de entonces pereció anegado en el agua; By water, the former world then, having been inundated with water, perished.7pero que los cielos de hoy y la tierra están, por esa misma palabra, reservados para el fuego, guardados para el día del juicio y del exterminio de los hombres impíos. But the heavens and the earth that exist now were restored by the same Word, being reserved unto fire on the day of judgment, and unto the perdition of impious men.8A vosotros, empero, carísimos, no se os escape una cosa, a saber, que para el Señor un día es como mil años y mil años son como un día. Yet truly, let this one thing not escape notice, most beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.9No es moroso el Señor en la promesa, antes bien —lo que algunos pretenden ser tardanza— tiene Él paciencia con vosotros, no queriendo que algunos perezcan, sino que todos lleguen al arrepentimiento. The Lord is not delaying his promise, as some imagine, but he does act patiently for your sake, not wanting anyone to perish, but wanting all to be turned back to penance.10Pero el día del Señor vendrá como ladrón, y entonces pasarán los cielos con gran estruendo, y los elementos se disolverán para ser quemados, y la tierra y las obras que hay en ella no serán más halladas. Then the day of the Lord shall arrive like a thief. On that day, the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and truly the elements shall be dissolved with heat; then the earth, and the works that are within it, shall be completely burned up.11Si, pues, todo ha de disolverse así ¿cuál no debe ser la santidad de vuestra conducta y piedad Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what kind of people ought you to be? In behavior and in piety, be holy,12para esperar y apresurar la Parusía del día de Dios, por el cual los cielos encendidos se disolverán y los elementos se fundirán para ser quemados? waiting for, and hurrying toward, the advent of the day of the Lord, by which the burning heavens shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt from the heat of the fire.13Pues esperamos también conforme a su promesa cielos nuevos y tierra nueva en los cuales habite la justicia. Yet truly, in accord with his promises, we are looking forward to the new heavens and the new earth, in which justice lives.14Por lo cual, carísimos, ya que esperáis estas cosas, procurad estar sin mancha y sin reproche para que Él os encuentre en paz. Therefore, most beloved, while awaiting these things, be diligent, so that you may be found to be immaculate and unassailable before him, in peace.15Y creed que la longanimidad de nuestro Señor es para salvación, según os lo escribió igualmente nuestro amado hermano Pablo, conforme a la sabiduría que le ha sido concedida; And let the longsuffering of our Lord be considered salvation, as also our most beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,16como que él habla de esto mismo en todas sus epístolas, en las cuales hay algunos pasajes difíciles de entender, que los ignorantes y superficiales deforman, como lo hacen, por lo demás, con las otras Escrituras, para su propia ruina. just as he also spoke in all of his epistles about these things. In these, there are certain things which are difficult to understand, which the unlearned and the unsteady distort, as they also do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.17Vosotros, pues, carísimos, que lo sabéis de antemano, estad en guardia, no sea que aquellos impíos os arrastren consigo por sus errores y caigáis del sólido fundamento en que estáis. But since you, brothers, know these things beforehand, be cautious, lest by being drawn into the error of the foolish, you may fall away from your own steadfastness.18Antes bien, creced en la gracia y en el conocimiento de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo. A Él sea la gloria ahora y para el día de la eternidad. Amén. Yet truly, increase in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and in the day of eternity. Amen.
