1Yahvé envió entonces a Natán, el cual llegó a David y le dijo: “Había en una ciudad dos hombres, el uno rico y el otro pobre. Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And when he had come to him, he said to him: “Two men were in one city: one wealthy, and the other poor.2El rico tenía ovejas y ganado mayor en grandísimo número, The wealthy man had very many sheep and oxen.3el pobre, en cambio, no tenía más que una ovejita, que había comprado y criado, y la cual había crecido juntamente con él y con sus hijos, comiendo de su bocado y bebiendo de su copa y durmiendo en su seno; y era para él como una hija. But the poor man had nothing at all, except one little sheep, which he had bought and nourished. And she had grown up before him, together with his children, eating from his bread, and drinking from his cup, and sleeping in his bosom. And she was like a daughter to him.4Mas llegó un viajero al hombre rico, y este, no queriendo tocar a sus ovejas ni a sus bueyes para aderezarlos al viajero que le había llegado, tomó la ovejita del hombre pobre y la aderezó para el hombre que había venido a su casa.” But when a certain traveler had come to the wealthy man, neglecting to take from his own sheep and oxen, so that he might present a feast for that traveler, who had come to him, he took the sheep of the poor man, and he prepared a meal for the man who had come to him.”5Se irritó David fuertemente contra aquel hombre y dijo a Natán: “¡Vive Yahvé que el hombre que ha hecho esto es digno de muerte! Then David’s indignation was enraged exceedingly against that man, and he said to Nathan: “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this is a son of death.6Restituirá la oveja cuatro veces, por haber hecho esto y no haber tenido piedad.” He shall restore the sheep fourfold, because he did this word, and he did not take pity.”7Dijo entonces Natán a David: “Ese hombre eres tú. Así dice Yahvé, el Dios de Israel: «Yo te ungí rey sobre Israel y te libré de la mano de Saúl; But Nathan said to David: “You are that man. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.8te di la casa de tu señor y he puesto en tu seno las mujeres de tu señor; te he dado también la casa de Israel y de Judá; y si esto te parece poco, te daré por añadidura aún cosas mayores. And I gave the house of your lord to you, and the wives of your lord into your bosom. And I gave the house of Israel and of Judah to you. And as if these things were small, I shall add much greater things to you.9¿Por qué, pues, has vilipendiado el mandamiento de Yahvé, haciendo lo que es malo a sus ojos? Has matado a espada a Urías, el heteo, y has tomado a su mujer por mujer tuya, hiriéndole a él con la espada de los hijos de Ammón. Therefore, why have you despised the word of the Lord, so that you did evil in my sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword. And you have taken his wife as a wife for yourself. And you have put him to death with the sword of the sons of Ammon.10Por eso nunca se apartará la espada de tu casa; pues me has despreciado, tomando a la mujer de Urías, el heteo, para que sea mujer tuya.» For this reason, the sword shall not withdraw from your house, even perpetually, because you have despised me, and you have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite, so that she may be your wife.’11Así dice Yahvé: «He aquí que Yo suscitaré desgracias contra ti de entre tu misma familia. Quitaré tus mujeres ante tus mismos ojos y se las daré a tu prójimo, el cual se acostará con ellas a la luz de este sol. And so, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up over you an evil from your own house. And I will take your wives away before your eyes, and I will give them to your neighbor. And he will sleep with your wives in the sight of this sun.12Tú lo has hecho en secreto, pero Yo haré esto a vista de todo Israel y a la luz del sol».” For you acted secretly. But I will do this word in the sight of all of Israel, and in the sight of the sun.’ ”13Dijo entonces David a Natán: “He pecado contra Yahvé.” Y respondió Natán a David: “Yahvé, por su parte ha perdonado tu pecado; no morirás. And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David: “The Lord has also taken away your sin. You shall not die.14Pero puesto que con esta acción has dado a los enemigos de Yahvé ocasión de blasfemar, por eso el niño que te ha nacido morirá irremisiblemente.” Yet truly, because you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, because of this word, the son who was born to you: dying he shall die.”15Con esto Natán se fue a su casa, y Yahvé hirió al niño que la mujer de Urías había dado a David, de modo que enfermó gravemente. And Nathan returned to his own house. And the Lord struck the little one, whom the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and he was despaired of.16David rogó a Dios por el niño y ayunó rigurosamente; y retirándose pasaba las noches acostado en tierra. And David begged the Lord on behalf of the little one. And David fasted strictly, and entering alone, he lay upon the ground.17Los ancianos de su casa le instaron para obligarle a que se levantase de la tierra; pero él no quiso hacerlo ni tomar con ellos alimento. Then the elders of his house came, urging him to rise up from the ground. And he was not willing, nor would he eat a meal with them.18Al séptimo día murió el niño; mas los siervos de David no se atrevían a darle la noticia de que había muerto el niño, porque decían: “Si cuando aún vivía el niño le hablábamos y él no quería escuchar nuestra voz, ¿cómo podemos decirle que el niño ha muerto? ¿No le causará daño?” Then, on the seventh day, it happened that the infant died. And the servants of David were afraid to report to him that the little one had died. For they said: “Behold, when the child was still alive, we were speaking to him, but he would not listen to our voice. How much more will he afflict himself, if we tell him that the boy is dead?”19Pero David, al ver que sus siervos cuchicheaban entre sí, conoció que el niño había muerto, por lo cual dijo a sus siervos: “¿Ha muerto el niño?” Y ellos respondieron: “Ha muerto.” But when David had seen his servants whispering, he realized that the infant had died. And he said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they responded to him, “He is dead.”20Entonces se levantó David del suelo, se lavó y se ungió, y después de mudarse las ropas fue a la Casa de Yahvé y se prosternó. Luego vuelto a su casa pidió que le sirvieran la comida y comió. Therefore, David rose up from the ground. And he washed and anointed himself. And when he had changed his clothing, he entered the house of the Lord, and he worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and he asked them to place bread before him, and he ate.21Preguntáronle sus siervos: “¿Qué es esto que estás haciendo? Cuando el niño aún vivía, ayunabas y llorabas; y ahora que el niño ha muerto te levantas y comes pan.” But his servants said to him: “What is this word that you have done? You fasted and were weeping, on behalf of the infant, while he was still alive. But when the boy was dead, you arose and ate bread.”22A lo que respondió: “Yo ayunaba y lloraba por el niño cuando aún vivía, pues decía: «¿Quién sabe si Yahvé no tendrá piedad de mí, y el niño quedará con vida?» And he said: “While he was yet alive, I fasted and wept on behalf of the infant. For I said: Who knows if the Lord may perhaps give him to me, and let the infant live?23Mas ahora que ha muerto, ¿para qué he de ayunar? ¿Podré acaso restituirle la vida? Yo iré a él, pero él no vendrá más a mí.” But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Would I be able to bring him back anymore? Instead, I will go to him. Yet truly, he will not return to me.”24Luego consoló David a Betsabee, su mujer, y entrado donde ella estaba se llegó a ella; la cual le dio un hijo, al que puso por nombre Salomón. Y Yahvé le amó, And David consoled his wife Bathsheba. And entering to her, he slept with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him.25y envió al profeta Natán, que le dio el nombre de Yedidyá, por amor de Yahvé. And he sent, by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name, Beloved of the Lord, because the Lord loved him.26Entretanto Joab prosiguió la guerra contra Rabbá de los ammonitas, y tomó la ciudad real. And then Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and he fought outside the royal city.27Envió, pues, Joab mensajeros a David que dijeran: “He atacado a Rabbá y he tomado la ciudad de las aguas. And Joab sent messengers to David, saying: “I have struggled against Rabbah, and so the City of Waters will soon be seized.28Junta, pues, ahora el resto del pueblo y ven a acampar contra la ciudad para tomarla, no sea que tome yo la ciudad y tenga el honor de la victoria.” Now therefore, gather the remaining portion of the people together, and besiege the city and take it. Otherwise, when the city will have been laid waste by me, the victory will be ascribed to my name.”29Entonces David juntó todo el pueblo y marchó a Rabbá; la atacó y se apoderó de ella. And so David gathered together all the people, and he set out against Rabbah. And after he had fought, he seized it.30Y quitó de la cabeza de su rey la corona, que pesaba un talento de oro y tenía una piedra preciosa. Esta fue puesta en la cabeza de David, el cual tomó de la ciudad un botín muy grande. And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, having the most precious gems. And it was placed upon the head of David. Moreover, he carried away the spoils of the city, which were very many.31Sacó también a los habitantes de la misma y los puso a las sierras, a los picos de hierro y a las hachas de hierro, y los llevó a los hornos de ladrillos. Lo mismo hizo con todas las ciudades de los hijos de Ammón. Después volvió David con toda la gente a Jerusalén. Also, bringing forth its people, he sawed them, and he drove over them with iron wagons, and he divided them with knives, and he dragged them through brick kilns. So he did to all the citizens of the sons of Ammon. And David returned, with the entire army, to Jerusalem.
