1En aquel tiempo el rey Herodes empezó a perseguir a algunos de la Iglesia; Now at the same time, king Herod extended his hand, in order to afflict some from the Church.2y mató a espada a Santiago, hermano de Juan. Then he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.3Viendo que esto agradaba a los judíos, tomó preso también a Pedro. Eran entonces los días de los Ázimos. And seeing that it pleased the Jews, he set out next to apprehend Peter also. Now it was the days of Unleavened Bread.4A este lo prendió y lo metió en la cárcel, entregándolo a la custodia de cuatro piquetes de soldados de a cuatro hombres cada uno, con el propósito de presentarlo al pueblo después de la Pascua. So when he had apprehended him, he sent him into prison, handing him over into the custody of four groups of four soldiers, intending to produce him to the people after the Passover.5Pedro se hallaba, pues, custodiado en la cárcel, mas la Iglesia hacía sin cesar oración a Dios por él. And so Peter was detained in prison. But prayers were being made without ceasing, by the Church, to God on his behalf.6Cuando Herodes estaba ya a punto de presentarlo, en aquella misma noche Pedro dormía en medio de dos soldados, atado con dos cadenas, y ante las puertas estaban guardias que custodiaban la cárcel. And when Herod was ready to produce him, in that same night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, and was bound with two chains. And there were guards in front of the door, guarding the prison.7Y he aquí que sobrevino un ángel del Señor y una luz, resplandeció en el aposento, y golpeando el costado de Pedro lo despertó, diciendo: “Levántate presto”. Y se le cayeron las cadenas de las manos. And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near, and a light shined forth in the cell. And tapping Peter on the side, he awakened him, saying, “Rise up, quickly.” And the chains fell from his hands.8Díjole entonces el ángel: “Cíñete y cálzate tus sandalias”; y lo hizo así. Díjole asimismo: “Ponte la capa y sígueme”. Then the Angel said to him: “Dress yourself, and put on your boots.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your garment around yourself and follow me.”9Salió, pues, y le siguió sin saber si era realidad lo que el ángel hacía con él; antes bien le parecía ver una visión. And going out, he followed him. And he did not know this truth: that this was being done by an Angel. For he thought that he was seeing a vision.10Pasaron la primera guardia y la segunda y llegaron a la puerta de hierro que daba a la ciudad, la cual se les abrió automáticamente. Y habiendo salido pasaron adelante por una calle, y al instante se apartó de él el ángel. And passing by the first and second guards, they came to the iron gate which leads into the city; and it opened for them by itself. And departing, they continued on along a certain side street. And suddenly the Angel withdrew from him.11Entonces Pedro vuelto en sí dijo: “Ahora sé verdaderamente que el Señor ha enviado su ángel y me ha librado de la mano de Herodes y de toda la expectación del pueblo de los judíos”. And Peter, returning to himself, said: “Now I know, truly, that the Lord sent his Angel, and that he rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the people of the Jews were anticipating.”12Pensando en esto llegó a la casa de María, madre de Juan, por sobrenombre Marcos, donde muchos estaban reunidos haciendo oración. And as he was considering this, he arrived at the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was surnamed Mark, where many were gathered and were praying.13Llamó a la puerta del portal, y salió a escuchar una sirvienta llamada Rode, Then, as he knocked at the door of the gate, a girl went out to answer, whose name was Rhoda.14la cual, reconociendo la voz de Pedro, de pura alegría no abrió la puerta sino que corrió adentro con la nueva de que Pedro estaba a la puerta. And when she recognized the voice of Peter, out of joy, she did not open the gate, but instead, running in, she reported that Peter stood before the gate.15Dijéronle: “Estás loca”. Mas ella insistía en que era así. Ellos entonces dijeron: “Es su ángel”. But they said to her, “You are crazy.” But she reaffirmed that this was so. Then they were saying, “It is his angel.”16Pedro, empero, siguió golpeando a la puerta. Abrieron, por fin, y viéndolo quedaron pasmados. But Peter was persevering in knocking. And when they had opened, they saw him and were astonished.17Mas él, haciéndoles señal con la mano para que callasen, les contó cómo el Señor le había sacado de la cárcel, Después dijo: Anunciad esto a Santiago y a los hermanos. Y saliendo fue a otro lugar. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he explained how the Lord had led him away from prison. And he said, “Inform James and those brothers.” And going out, he went away to another place.18Cuando se hizo de día, era grande la confusión entre los soldados sobre qué habría sido de Pedro. Then, when daylight came, there was no small commotion among the soldiers, as to what had happened concerning Peter.19Herodes lo buscaba y no hallándole, hizo inquisición contra los guardias y mandó conducirlos (al suplicio). Él mismo descendió de Judea a Cesarea en donde se quedó. And when Herod had requested him and did not obtain him, having had the guards interrogated, he ordered them led away. And descending from Judea into Caesarea, he lodged there.20Estaba (Herodes) irritado contra los tirios y sidonios; mas ellos de común acuerdo se le presentaron y habiendo ganado a Blasto, camarero del rey, pidieron la paz, pues su país era alimentado por el del rey. Now he was angry with those of Tyre and Sidon. But they came to him with one accord, and, having persuaded Blastus, who was over the bedchamber of the king, they petitioned for peace, because their regions were supplied with food by him.21En el día determinado Herodes, vestido de traje real y sentado en el trono, les pronunció un discurso. Then, on the appointed day, Herod was clothed in kingly apparel, and he sat in the judgment seat, and he gave a speech to them.22Y el pueblo clamaba: Esta es la voz de un dios y no de un hombre. Then the people were crying out, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”23Al mismo instante lo hirió un ángel del Señor por no haber dado a Dios la gloria; y roído de gusanos expiró. And immediately, an Angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given honor to God. And having been consumed by worms, he expired.24Entretanto la palabra de Dios crecía y se multiplicaba. But the word of the Lord was increasing and multiplying.25Mas Bernabé y Saulo, acabada su misión, volvieron de Jerusalén llevando consigo a Juan, el apellidado Marcos. Then Barnabas and Saul, having completed the ministry, returned from Jerusalem, bringing with them John, who was surnamed Mark.
