1Pasando por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica, donde se hallaba una sinagoga de los judíos. Now when they had walked through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they arrived at Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.2Pablo, según su costumbre, entró a ellos, y por tres sábados disputaba con ellos según las Escrituras, Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,3explicando y haciendo ver cómo era preciso que el Cristo padeciese y resucitase de entre los muertos, y que este Jesús a quien (dijo) yo os predico, es el Cristo. interpreting and concluding that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead, and that “this is the Jesus Christ, whom I am announcing to you.”4Algunos de ellos se convencieron y se unieron a Pablo y a Silas, y asimismo un gran número de prosélitos griegos, y no pocas mujeres de las principales. And some of them believed and were joined to Paul and Silas, and a great number of these were from the worshipers and the Gentiles, and not a few were noble women.5Pero los judíos, movidos por envidia, juntaron hombres malos entre los ociosos de la plaza, y formando un tropel alborotaron la ciudad, y se presentaron ante la casa de Jasón, procurando llevarlos ante el pueblo. But the Jews, being jealous, and joining with certain evildoers among the common men, caused a disturbance, and they stirred up the city. And taking up a position near the house of Jason, they sought to lead them out to the people.6Mas como no los hallasen, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos hermanos ante los magistrados de la ciudad, gritando: “Estos son los que han trastornado al mundo, y ahora han venido también aquí, And when they had not found them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out: “For these are the ones who have stirred up the city. And they came here,7y Jasón les ha dado acogida. Todos estos obran contra los decretos del César, diciendo, que hay otro rey, Jesús”. and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”8Con esto alborotaron a la plebe y a los magistrados de la ciudad que tales cosas oían. And they incited the people. And the rulers of the city, upon hearing these things,9Tomaron, pues, fianza de Jasón y de los demás, y los soltaron. and having received an explanation from Jason and the others, released them.10Inmediatamente, los hermanos hicieron partir a Pablo y a Silas de noche para Berea, los cuales, llegados allí, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos. Yet truly, the brothers promptly sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. And when they had arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.11Eran estos de mejor índole que los de Tesalónica, y recibieron la palabra con toda prontitud, escudriñando cada día las Escrituras (para ver) si esto era así. But these were more noble than those who were at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all enthusiasm, daily examining the Scriptures to see if these things were so.12Muchos, pues, de ellos creyeron, así como también de las mujeres griegas de distinción, y no pocos de los hombres. And indeed, many believed among them, as well as not a few among the honorable Gentile men and women.13Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica conocieron que también en Berea había sido predicada por Pablo la Palabra de Dios, fueron allí agitando y alborotando igualmente a la plebe. Then, when the Jews of Thessalonica had realized that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they went there also, stirring up and disturbing the multitude.14Entonces, al instante, los hermanos hicieron partir a Pablo, para que se encaminase hasta el mar; pero Silas y Timoteo se quedaron allí. And then the brothers quickly sent Paul away, so that he might travel by sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.15Los que conducían a Pablo lo llevaron hasta Atenas, y habiendo recibido encargo para que Silas y Timoteo viniesen a él lo más pronto posible, se marcharon. Then those who were leading Paul brought him as far as Athens. And having received an order from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him quickly, they set out.16Mientras Pablo los aguardaba en Atenas, se consumía interiormente su espíritu al ver que la ciudad estaba cubierta de ídolos. Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred up within him, seeing the city given over to idolatry.17Disputaba, pues, en la sinagoga con los judíos y con los prosélitos, y en el foro todos los días con los que por casualidad encontraba. And so, he was disputing with the Jews in the synagogue, and with the worshipers, and in public places, throughout each day, with whomever was there.18También algunos de los filósofos epicúreos y estoicos disputaban con él. Algunos decían: “¿Qué quiere decir este siembra-palabras?” Y otros: “Parece que es pregonador de dioses extranjeros”, porque les anunciaba a Jesús y la resurrección. Now certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were arguing with him. And some were saying, “What does this sower of the Word want to say?” Yet others were saying, “He seems to be an announcer for new demons.” For he was announcing to them Jesus and the Resurrection.19Con que lo tomaron y llevándolo al areópago dijeron: “¿Podemos saber qué es esta nueva doctrina de que tú hablas? And apprehending him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: “Are we able to know what this new doctrine is, about which you speak?20Porque traes a nuestros oídos cosas extrañas; por tanto queremos saber qué viene a ser esto”. For you bring certain new ideas to our ears. And so we would like to know what these things mean.”21Pues todos los atenienses y los extranjeros residentes allí no gustaban más que de decir u oír novedades. (Now all the Athenians, and arriving visitors, were occupying themselves with nothing other than speaking or hearing various new ideas.)22De pie en medio del Areópago, Pablo dijo: “Varones atenienses, en todas las cosas veo que sois extremadamente religiosos; But Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are rather superstitious.23porque al pasar y contemplar vuestras imágenes sagradas, hallé también un altar en que está escrito: A un dios desconocido. Eso que vosotros adoráis sin conocerlo, es lo que yo os anuncio: For as I was passing by and noticing your idols, I also found an altar, on which was written: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this is what I am preaching to you:24El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo cuanto en él se contiene, este siendo Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no habita en templos hechos de mano; the God who made the world and all that is in it, the One who is the Lord of heaven and earth, who does not live in temples made with hands.25ni es servido de manos humanas, como si necesitase de algo, siendo Él quien da a todos vida, aliento y todo. Neither is he served by the hands of men, as if in need of anything, since it is he who gives to all things life and breath and all else.26Él hizo de uno solo todo el linaje de los hombres para que habitasen sobre toda la faz de la tierra, habiendo fijado tiempos determinados, y los límites de su habitación, And he has made, out of one, every family of man: to live upon the face of the entire earth, determining the appointed seasons and the limits of their habitation,27para que buscasen a Dios, tratando a tientas de hallarlo, porque no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros; so as to seek God, if perhaps they may consider him or find him, though he is not far from each one of us.28pues en Él vivimos y nos movemos y existimos, como algunos de vuestros poetas han dicho: “Porque somos linaje suyo”. ‘For in him we live, and move, and exist.’ Just as some of your own poets have said. ‘For we are also of his family.’29Siendo así linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la divinidad sea semejante a oro o a plata o a piedra, esculturas del arte y del ingenio humano. Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.30Pasando, pues, por alto los tiempos de la ignorancia, Dios anuncia ahora a los hombres que todos en todas partes se arrepientan; And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.31por cuanto Él ha fijado un día en que ha de juzgar al orbe en justicia por medio de un Hombre que Él ha constituido, dando certeza a todos con haberle resucitado de entre los muertos”. For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.”32Cuando oyeron lo de la resurrección de los muertos, unos se burlaban, y otros decían: “Sobre esto te oiremos otra vez”. And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, “We will listen to you about this again.”33Así salió Pablo de en medio de ellos. So Paul departed from their midst.34Mas algunos hombres se unieron a él y abrazaron la fe, entre ellos Dionisio el areopagita, y una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros con ellos. Yet truly, certain men, adhering to him, did believe. Among these were also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
