1Por los pecados que habéis cometido delante de Dios, seréis llevados cautivos a Babilonia por Nabucodonosor, rey de los babilonios. “Because of the sins which you have sinned before God, you will be carried away into the captivity of Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.2Llegados a Babilonia, permaneceréis allí muchos años y un largo tiempo, hasta siete generaciones; después de lo cual os sacaré de allí en paz. And so, having been taken into Babylon, you will be there many years and for a long time, even to seven generations, yet after this, I will lead you away from there with peace.3Ahora bien, en Babilonia veréis dioses de oro, de plata, de piedra y de madera, llevados en hombros, que causan temor a las gentes. But now, you will see in Babylon gods of gold and of silver, and of stone and of wood, carried upon shoulders, an awful display for the peoples.4Guardaos, pues, de imitar a los extranjeros, de modo que os amedrentéis y vengáis a concebir temor de ellos. See to it, then, that you do not in effect become like these strangers and become afraid, so that in awe you would be carried away into their midst.5Cuando veáis, detrás y delante de ellos la turba que los adora, decid en vuestro corazón: “Oh Señor, a Ti se ha de adorar.” And so, seeing the turmoil, behind you and in front of you, as they are worshiping, say in your hearts, ‘You ought to be adored, O Lord.’6Porque mi Ángel estará con vosotros y Yo mismo tendré cuidado de vuestras almas. For my angel is with you. And I myself will examine your souls.7Pues los (ídolos) tienen una lengua pulida por el artífice, y aunque están dorados y plateados, son un mero engaño e incapaces de hablar. For their tongue is polished by the craftsman, and they themselves are even inlaid with gold and silver, yet they are false and unable to speak.8Al modo que se hace con una doncella, amiga de galas, así toman el oro que recibieron, And, just like a virgin who loves to decorate herself, so do they take up gold and make designs with it.9y aderezan coronas sobre las cabezas de sus dioses; y sucede a veces que los sacerdotes roban a sus dioses el oro y la plata y lo gastan para sí mismos. Their gods have crowns of certified gold upon their heads, from which the priests subtract gold and silver, and spend it on themselves.10Aun dan de él a las rameras y adornan a las meretrices, y de nuevo, después de recobrarlo de las rameras engalanan a sus dioses. Moreover, they even give from it to prostitutes, and use it to adorn kept women, and when they receive it back from the kept women, they use it to adorn their gods.11Mas estos no saben librarse del orín ni de la polilla. But these cannot be freed from rust and moths.12Los revisten también de púrpura y les limpian el rostro a causa del muchísimo polvo que hay en sus templos. Although they are covered with a purple garment, they must wipe off their face, because of the dust of the house, which is very great around them.13Uno tiene un cetro en su mano, como el juez de un distrito, mas no puede quitar la vida al que le ofende. Yet he who holds a scepter like a man, like the judge of the region, cannot put to death one who sins against him.14Otro tiene en su mano una espada, o un hacha; mas no se puede librar a sí mismo de la guerra, ni de los ladrones. Por donde se ve que no son dioses. And though he holds in his hand a sword and an axe, yet he cannot free himself from war and robbers. From this let it be known to you that they are not gods.15No los temáis. Porque los dioses de ellos son como una vasija de un hombre; si se quiebra, para nada sirve. Therefore, do not fear them. For just as the vessel a man uses becomes useless when broken, so also are their gods.16Colocados en los templos, sus ojos se cubren del polvo que levantan los pies de los que entran. When they are set up in a house, their eyes are full of dust from the feet of those who enter.17Y como es encerrado detrás de muchas puertas el que ofendió al rey, y como se practica con uno que es conducido a muerte, así los sacerdotes aseguran las puertas con cerraduras y cerrojos, para que los ladrones no despojen a los dioses. And like one who has offended the king and is surrounded at every door, or like a corpse about to be carried to the grave, so do the priests secure the doors with bars and locks, lest they be plundered by robbers.18Enciéndenles también lámparas, y en mayor número que para sí mismos, pero ellos no pueden ver ninguna de ellas, porque son como las vigas del templo. They light candles to them, and in great number, and still they are unable to see, for they are like logs in the house.19Dicen que las sierpes que salen de la tierra, les lamen el interior, cuando se los comen juntamente con sus vestiduras sin que ellos mismos lo sientan. It is truly said that the creeping things, which are of the earth, gnaw their hearts, and yet when these devour them and their garments, they do not feel it.20Sus caras se vuelven negras por el humo que hay en el templo. Their faces are made black by the smoke that is made in the house.21Sobre su cuerpo y sobre su cabeza vuelan lechuzas, golondrinas, y otras aves, y también los gatos andan sobre ellos. Over their bodies and over their heads fly owls and swallows and birds, and similarly, even cats.22Por donde podéis conocer que no son dioses; y por lo mismo, no los temáis. From this you should understand that they are not gods. Therefore, neither should you fear them.23El oro que tienen es para bien parecer; pero si alguno no los limpia del orín, ya no brillan. Ni aun cuando fueron fundidos, lo sintieron. Furthermore, the gold which they have is shiny, but unless someone wipes off the rust, they will not shine. And even when they were molten, they did not feel it.24Y a pesar de que no hay en ellos espíritu alguno, fueron comprados a sumo precio. They acquire all kinds of costly things, yet there is no breath in them.25Llevados son en hombros, como que no tienen pies; mostrando así a los hombres su vergüenza. Avergonzados sean también aquellos que los adoran. Without feet, they are carried upon shoulders, showing their unworthiness to all men. And so, may those who worship them be confounded.26Si caen en tierra no pueden levantarse por sí mismos; ni por sí mismos pueden ponerse en movimiento si alguno los pone en pie; y como a los muertos, así les son presentadas ofrendas. Because of this, if they fall to the ground, they do not get up by themselves; and if someone sets it upright, they will not stand firm on their own; yet, just like the dead, offerings are placed next to them.27Estas ofrendas las venden y malgastan los sacerdotes, y también sus mujeres conservan una parte para sí; no dan nada de ello al pobre ni al desvalido. The priests themselves sell their sacrifices, and they spend it wastefully; and, in like manner, their wives take part of it, never sharing anything with the sick or the beggars.28Tocan los sacrificios de ellos las mujeres parturientas y las menstruantes. Conociendo, pues, por esto que no son dioses, no los temáis. Fertile and menstruous women contaminate their sacrifices. And so, knowing from this that they are not gods, you should not fear them.29Mas, ¿cómo es que los llaman dioses? Es porque las mujeres presentan dones a estos dioses de plata, de oro y de madera; For what reason are they called gods? It is because the women serve before the gods of silver and gold and wood,30y los sacerdotes están sentados en las casas de ellos, rasgadas sus túnicas, rapadas la cabeza y la barba y teniendo descubierta la cabeza; and the priests sit in their houses, with torn garments, and their heads and beards shaven, and nothing on their heads.31y rugen dando gritos delante de sus dioses, como en un banquete fúnebre: But they roar, shouting out to their gods, just as at a feast for the dead.32Los sacerdotes les quitan parte de sus vestidos, para vestir a sus mujeres y a sus hijos. The priests take away the garments of their gods, and clothe their wives and their sons.33Hágaseles mal, o hágaseles bien, no pueden retribuirlo. No pueden poner rey, ni quitarlo. And whether they endure evil from someone, or good, they are not able to repay it. They can neither establish a king, nor remove him.34Y asimismo no pueden dar riquezas, ni una pieza de cobre. Si alguno les hace un voto, y no lo cumple, ni de esto se quejan. Similarly, they can neither give riches, nor avenge evil. If anyone makes a vow to them, and does not keep it, they cannot require it.35No pueden librar a un hombre de la muerte, ni amparar al débil contra el poderoso. They cannot free a man from death, nor rescue the weak from the strong.36No restituyen la vista a ningún ciego, ni libran a nadie de la necesidad. They cannot restore sight to the blind, nor free a man from need.37No se compadecen de la viuda, ni son bienhechores de los huérfanos. They will not have mercy on the widow, nor do good to orphans.38Semejantes a las piedras del monte son esos sus dioses de madera y piedra, dorados y plateados. Confundidos serán sus adoradores. Their gods of wood, and of stone, and of gold, and of silver, are like stones from the mountain; and those who worship them will be confounded.39¿Cómo es posible creer y decir que son dioses? In what way, then, is it to be supposed or said that they are gods?40Aun los mismos caldeos los deshonran. Pues al ver que uno no puede hablar porque es mudo, le presentan a Bel, rogándole que le haga hablar; For even the Chaldeans themselves do not honor these, who, when they hear about a mute, unable to speak, they offer him to Bel, asking from him that he may speak,41como si (Bel) pudiera entenderlos. Y ellos mismos, cuando se dan cuenta de su error, los abandonan, porque sus dioses no tienen conocimiento. as if these, who are unable to move, would be able to perceive. And even they themselves, when they shall understand this, will abandon them, for, having come to their senses, they do not consider them to be gods.42Las mujeres, ceñidas de cordones, se sientan en los caminos, quemando carozos de aceitunas, Yet the women, wrapped in cords, sit by the roads, burning olive-stones.43y si una de ellas, atraída por algún transeúnte, duerme con él, zahiere a su compañera de que esa no fue apreciada como ella, ni roto su cordón. And when any one of them, having been attracted by someone passing by, would sleep with him, she reproaches her neighbor because she was not found worthy, as she was, nor was her cord broken.44Todas las cosas que se hacen con ellos, no son más que embuste. ¿Cómo es posible creer y decir que son dioses? But all things that occur with them are false; in what way, then, is it to be considered or said that they are gods?45Han sido fabricados por artífices y orfebres. No serán otra cosa que lo que quieran los sacerdotes que sean. Yet they have been made by the workmen and the goldsmiths. They will be nothing else but what the priests want them to be.46Aun los mismos artífices de los ídolos no son longevos. ¿Podrán serlo aquellas cosas que ellos fabrican? For the artisans themselves, who make them, do not exist for a long time. So then, can these things, which have been made by them, be gods?47Superchería y oprobio es lo que dejan a los venideros. Yet they have bequeathed falsehoods and disgrace after this to the future.48Porque si sobreviene alguna guerra o desastre, los sacerdotes deliberan consigo dónde guarecerse con ellos. For when they are overcome by battle or evil, the priests consider among themselves where they may hide themselves with them.49¿Cómo puede creerse que son dioses aquellos que no pueden librarse de la guerra, ni salvarse de las calamidades? Therefore, why would they be perceived to be gods, who can neither free themselves from war, nor rescue themselves from evils?50Mas un día se conocerá que ellos siendo cosa de madera, dorados y plateados, no son sino un embuste. Todas las naciones y todos los reyes verán claramente que no son dioses, sino obras de la mano de los hombres, y que no hay en ellos nada divino. For, in as much as they are only wood, inlaid with gold and silver, so let it be known henceforth, by all nations and kings, that they are false; because it has been revealed that they are not gods, but the work of men’s hands, and there is no work of God in them.51Pero, ¿de dónde se conoce que no son dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres y que en ellos no hay nada divino? For this reason, then, it has been accepted that they are not gods, but are works of the hands of men, and no work of God is in them.52Porque ellos no ponen rey en ningún país, ni dan lluvia a los hombres. They have not raised up a king in the region, nor will they give rain to men.53No pueden decidir las causas, ni librar de opresión a región alguna, impotentes como son. Son como cornejas entre el cielo y la tierra. They will not discern a judgment for anyone, nor will they free a region from injury, because they can do nothing, like crows in the middle of heaven and earth.54Porque cuando se prende fuego en el templo de esos dioses de madera, dorados y plateados, sus sacerdotes ciertamente echan a huir, y se ponen en salvo; pero ellos se queman en el templo, lo mismo que las vigas. And, indeed, when there happens to be a fire in the house of these gods of wood, silver, and gold, the priests will certainly run away and save themselves, but these will truly be burned up like logs in the midst of it.55Ni a un rey ni a los enemigos hacen resistencia. ¿Cómo creer o admitir que son dioses? Yet they cannot withstand a king and war. In what way, then, is it to be considered or accepted that they are gods?56No se libran de ladrones, ni de salteadores, esos dioses de madera y piedra, plateados y dorados; porque aquellos pueden más que ellos; These gods of wood and stone, inlaid with gold and silver, can free themselves neither from thieves nor from robbers; whoever is stronger than they are,57y les quitan el oro y la plata, y el vestido de que están cubiertos, y se marchan, sin que (esos dioses) puedan valerse por sí mismos. will take up these things, the gold and the silver, and the garments which cover them, and will get away; neither will they be able to help themselves.58Por manera que un rey; que muestra su poder, o cualquier objeto útil en una casa, del cual se precia el dueño, o la puerta de la casa que guarda lo que hay dentro de ella, valen más que esos falsos dioses. Therefore, it is better to be a king displaying his power, or a useful vessel in a house, about which he who owns it will boast, or a door in the house, which keeps safe what is inside, than to be these gods of falsehood.59El sol, la luna y las estrellas, que alumbran y están puestos para sernos provechosos, obedecen a Dios. For the sun, and the moon, and the constellations, though they are brilliant and have been sent forth to be useful, are obedient.60Asimismo el relámpago se hace ver bien cuando aparece, y el viento sopla por todas las regiones. Similarly, the lightning, when it appears and is evident, and, in like manner, the wind blowing in every region,61Iigualmente las nubes, cuando Dios les manda pasar por sobre la tierra, ejecutan lo mandado; and the clouds, when God orders them to make their rounds over the whole world, each carries out what was commanded.62y el fuego enviado de arriba para abrasar los montes y los bosques, cumple lo que se le ha ordenado. Mas estos (ídolos), ni en la belleza, ni en la fuerza son comparables a ninguna de esas cosas. Furthermore, the fire, having been sent from above so that it may consume mountains and woods, does what it has been instructed to do. Yet these are not similar, neither in splendor, nor in power, to any one of them.63Por eso no debe creerse ni decirse que sean dioses, cuando no pueden hacer justicia, ni hacer cosa alguna a los hombres. From this, it should neither be supposed, nor said, that they are gods; since they are neither able to give judgment, nor to accomplish anything for men.64Sabiendo que no son dioses, no los temáis. And so, knowing that they are not gods, therefore, have no fear of them.65Pues no pueden maldecir a los reyes ni bendecirlos; For they can neither curse kings, nor bless them.66tampoco muestran a los pueblos señales en el cielo, ni lucen como el sol, ni alumbran como la luna. Besides, they show no signs in heaven to the nations; they neither shine like the sun, nor give light like the moon.67Más que ellos valen las bestias, porque huyendo pueden refugiarse bajo cubierto, y valerse de sí mismas. Beasts are better than they are, for they can flee under a covering, and so protect themselves.68De ninguna manera son dioses, como es evidente; por tanto no los temáis. Therefore, in no way is it clear to us that they are gods; because of this, you should not fear them.69Porque así como no es buen guarda en el melonar un espantajo, así son sus dioses de madera, dorados y plateados. For just as a scarecrow in a cucumber field protects nothing, so are their gods of wood, and silver, and inlaid gold.70Como el arbusto de espinas en un huerto, sobre el cual vienen a posar toda suerte de pájaros, y como un muerto arrojado al sepulcro tenebroso, así son estos dioses suyos de madera, dorados y plateados. They are just the same as a white thorn in a garden, on which all the birds sit; they are even like a corpse thrown out into the darkness, just so are these gods of wood, and inlaid gold, and inlaid silver.71También por la púrpura y escarlata que sobre ellos se apolilla, se conocerá claramente que no son dioses. Ellos mismos son al fin carcomidos y serán un oprobio para el país. By the purple, and likewise the Royal purple, moth-eaten garments upon them, you will then know that they are not gods. And finally, they themselves are consumed and will be a disgrace in the region.72Mejor es, pues, el varón justo, que no tiene ídolos; porque está bien lejos de la ignominia. Better is the just man who has no such images, for he will be far from disgrace.”
