Daniel 1
1El año tercero del reinado de Joakim, rey de Judá, vino Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia a Jerusalén y la asedió. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.2Y el Señor entregó en sus manos a Joakim, rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la Casa de Dios. Los llevó (Nabucodonosor) al país de Sinear, a la casa de su dios; y puso los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios. And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim the king of Judah and a portion of the vessels of the house of God. And he carried them away into the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasure chamber of his god.3Y dijo el rey a Aspenaz, prefecto de los eunucos, que trajese de los hijos de Israel, del linaje real y de los príncipes, And the king told Ashpenaz, the chief of the eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the sons of Israel, and some of the offspring of the king and of the sovereigns:4algunos niños que no tuviesen ningún defecto, de hermosa figura, instruidos en toda sabiduría, dotados de saber, prudentes, inteligentes y aptos para estar en el palacio del rey y aprender la escritura y la lengua de los caldeos. young men, in whom there was no blemish, noble in appearance, and accomplished in all wisdom, cautious in knowledge, and well-educated, and who could stand in the palace of the king, so that he might teach them the letters and the language of the Chaldeans.5El rey les asignó una ración diaria de los escogidos manjares de la mesa real, y del vino que él mismo bebía, y mandó que los alimentasen así por tres años para que al final de ellos sirviesen al rey. And the king appointed for them provisions for each day, from his own food and from the wine which he himself drank, so that, after being nourished for three years, they would stand in the sight of the king.6Entre ellos se hallaron, de los hijos de Judá: Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías; Now, among those of the sons of Judah, there were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.7a los cuales el prefecto de los eunucos les puso (nuevos) nombres; a Daniel le llamó Baltasar; a Ananías, Sidrac; a Misael, Misac; y a Azarías, Abdénago. And the chief of the eunuchs assigned names to them: to Daniel, Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.8Daniel se propuso en su corazón no contaminarse con los manjares escogidos del rey, ni con el vino que él bebía; por lo cual pidió al prefecto de los eunucos que no le (obligara) a contaminarse. But Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not be polluted with the king’s meal, nor with the wine he drank, and he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not be contaminated.9Y Dios hizo que Daniel hallase gracia y benevolencia ante el prefecto de los eunucos. And so God gave Daniel grace and mercy in the sight of the leader of the eunuchs.10Dijo el prefecto de los eunucos a Daniel: “Temo al rey mi señor, el cual ha dispuesto lo que debéis comer y beber. ¿Por qué ha de ver vuestras caras más flacas que las de los jóvenes de vuestra edad? Así me haríais culpable ante el rey.” And the leader of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed food and drink for you, who, if he should see that your faces are leaner than those of the other youths your age, you would condemn my head to the king.”11Respondió entonces Daniel a Malasar, al cual el prefecto de los eunucos había encargado el cuidado de Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías: And Daniel said to Malasar, whom the leader of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,12Te suplico que hagas con tus siervos una prueba de diez días; dénsenos legumbres para comer y agua para beber; “I beg you to test us, your servants, for ten days, and let roots be given to us to eat and water to drink,13después examinarás nuestros semblantes y los semblantes de los jóvenes que comen de los manjares escogidos del rey; y según vieres, haz con tus siervos.” and then observe our faces, and the faces of the children who eat the king’s food, and then deal with your servants according to what you see.”14Aceptó él su propuesta y los probó durante diez días. When he had heard these words, he tested them for ten days.15Y al cabo de los diez días sus semblantes parecían mejores y más llenos que los de todos los jóvenes que comían de los escogidos manjares del rey. But, after ten days, their faces appeared better and fatter than all the children who had eaten from the king’s food.16Desde entonces Malasar se llevaba sus manjares escogidos y el vino que habían de beber, y les daba legumbres. Thereafter, Malasar took away their portions and their wine for drinking, and he gave them roots.17Dios concedió a estos cuatro jóvenes conocimiento y entendimiento en todas las letras, y también sabiduría. Daniel entendía, además, toda suerte de visiones y sueños. Yet, to these children, God gave knowledge and instruction in every book, and wisdom, but to Daniel, also the understanding of all visions and dreams.18Cumplido el tiempo que el rey había señalado para que le fuesen presentados, les condujo el prefecto de los eunucos a la presencia de Nabucodonosor. And when the time was completed, after which the king had said that they would be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before the sight of Nebuchadnezzar.19El rey habló con ellos, y no se halló entre todos ellos ninguno como Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías; por lo que fueron admitidos al servicio del rey. And, when the king conversed with them, there had not been found any so great in all the world as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and so they stood in the sight of the king.20En todos los asuntos de sabiduría e inteligencia en que el rey les consultó, los halló diez veces superiores a todos los magos y adivinos de todo su reino. And in every concept of wisdom and understanding, about which the king consulted with them, he found them to be ten times better than all the seers and astrologers put together, who were in his entire kingdom.21Permaneció Daniel hasta el año primero del rey Ciro. And so Daniel remained, even until the first year of king Cyrus.
