Daniel 4
1Yo, Nabucodonosor, vivía tranquilo en mi casa, y floreciente en mi palacio. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was content in my house and prospering in my palace.2Y estando yo en mi cama tuve un sueño que me asustó, y me turbaron los pensamientos y las visiones (que revolvía) mi cabeza. I saw a dream that terrified me, and my thoughts on my bed and the visions in my head disturbed me.3Y di orden que se presentasen delante de mí todos los sabios de Babilonia, para que me dieran la interpretación del sueño. And so a decree was established by me, that all of the wise men of Babylon should be brought in before me, and that they should reveal to me the answer to the dream.4Vinieron entonces los magos, los adivinos, los caldeos y los astrólogos, y conté ante ellos el sueño; pero no pudieron indicarme su interpretación. Then the seers, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers entered, and I explained about the dream in their presence, but they did not reveal its answer to me.5Al fin se presentó delante de mí Daniel, cuyo nombre es Baltasar, del nombre de mi dios, y en el cual reside el espíritu de los santos dioses; y le conté mi sueño, (diciendo): And then their colleague came in before me, Daniel, (whose name is Belteshazzar according to the name of my god,) who has the spirit of the holy gods within his very self, and I told the dream directly to him.6“Baltasar, jefe de los magos, por cuanto yo sé que el espíritu de los santos dioses reside en ti, y que no hay ningún secreto que te cause dificultades, exponme las visiones de mi sueño que he visto, y su interpretación. Belteshazzar, leader of the seers, since I know that you have in you the spirit of the holy gods, and that no mystery is unreachable to you, explain to me the visions of my dreams, which I saw, and the solution to them.7(He aquí) las visiones que tenía yo en mi cabeza estando en mi cama: Miraba yo, y vi un árbol en medio de la tierra, y su altura era grande. This was the vision of my head on my bed. I looked, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth, and its height was exceedingly great.8El árbol creció y se hizo fuerte, su copa tocaba en el cielo y se lo veía desde las extremidades de toda la tierra. The tree was great and strong, and its height reached up to heaven. It could be seen all the way to the ends of the entire earth.9Su follaje era hermoso, y su fruto copioso, y había en él comida para todos. A su sombra se abrigaban las bestias del campo, y en sus ramas moraban las aves del cielo; y toda carne vivía en él. Its leaves were very beautiful, and its fruit was very abundant, and in it was food for the whole world. Under it, animals and beasts were dwelling, and in its branches, the birds of the sky were sheltered, and from it, all flesh was fed.10Mientras estaba todavía mirando las visiones de mi cabeza, estando en mi cama, vi cómo un Velador y Santo descendía del cielo, I saw in the vision of my head upon my blanket, and behold, a watcher and a holy one descended from heaven.11que gritaba fuerte y dijo así: «Cortad el árbol y desmochad sus ramas, sacudid su follaje y desparramad sus frutos; huyan las bestias de debajo de él, y los pájaros de sus ramas. He cried out loudly, and he said this: “Cut down the tree and prune its branches; shake off its leaves and scatter its fruits; let flee the beasts, which are under it, and the birds from its branches.12Pero el tronco con sus raíces lo dejaréis en tierra, entre cadenas de hierro y de bronce, en medio de la hierba del campo. Sea bañado con el rocío del cielo y con las bestias sea su parte entre la hierba de la tierra. Nevertheless, leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be bound with a band of iron and brass among the plants, which are close by, and let it be touched by the dew of heaven, and let its place be with the wild animals among the plants of the earth.13Sea mudado su corazón de hombre, y désele un corazón de bestia, y pasen sobre él siete tiempos. Let his heart be changed from being human, and let the heart of a wild animal be given to him, and let seven periods of time pass over him.14De un decreto de los veladores viene esta sentencia, y es cosa que se hace por pedido de los santos, para que los vivientes conozcan que el Altísimo es dueño del reino de los hombres. Lo dará a quien mejor le parezca, y puede poner sobre él al más humilde de los hombres.» This is the decree from the judgment of the watchers, and the decision and proclamation of the holy ones, until the living shall know that the Supreme One is ruler in the kingdom of men, and that he will give it to whomever he wills, and he will appoint the lowest man over it.”15Este es el sueño que vi yo, el rey Nabucodonosor; y tú, Baltasar, dime la interpretación; pues ninguno de los sabios de mi reino ha podido darme su interpretación. Tú lo puedes, porque el espíritu de los santos dioses reside en ti.” I, king Nebuchadnezzar, saw this dream. And so you, Belteshazzar, must quickly explain to me the interpretation because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to declare the meaning of it to me. But you are able because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.16Entonces Daniel, cuyo nombre es Baltasar, quedó por un rato aturdido, y le conturbaron sus pensamientos, hasta que el rey tomó la palabra y dijo: “Baltasar, no te conturbe el sueño ni su interpretación.” Respondió Baltasar, y dijo: “Señor mío, sea este sueño para los que te odien, y su interpretación para tus enemigos. Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, began silently to think within himself for about one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. But the king responded, saying, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream and its interpretation disturb you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, the dream is for those who hate you, and its interpretation may be for your enemies.17El árbol que viste, que se hizo grande y fuerte, cuya altura llegaba hasta el cielo y que se podía ver desde toda la tierra; The tree that you saw was lofty and strong; its height reached toward heaven, and it could be seen throughout the whole world.18cuyo follaje era tan hermoso y su fruto tan copioso, en el cual había alimento para todos, debajo del cual moraban las bestias del campo y en cuyas ramas habitaban los pájaros del cielo; And its branches were very beautiful, and its fruit very abundant, and in it was food for all. Under it, dwelt the beasts of the field, and in its branches, the birds of the air stayed.19(ese árbol) eres tú, oh rey, que has venido a ser grande y fuerte; pues tu grandeza ha crecido hasta llegar al cielo, y tu dominación hasta alcanzar los fines de la tierra. It is you, O king, who has been greatly esteemed, and you have grown strong. And you have increased your power, and it reaches towards heaven, and your rule is to the ends of the whole earth.20Y si el rey vio a un Velador y Santo que descendía del cielo, diciendo: «Cortad el árbol y destruidlo, pero dejad el tronco con sus raíces en la tierra entre cadenas de bronce y de hierro, en medio de la hierba del campo, y sea bañado con el rocío del cielo y tenga su parte entre las bestias del campo hasta que pasen sobre él siete tiempos»; Yet the king also saw a watcher and a holy one descend from heaven and say: ‘Cut down the tree and scatter it; however, leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be bound with iron and brass, among the surrounding plants, and let it be sprinkled with the dew of heaven, and let his feeding be with the wild beasts, until seven periods of time pass over him.’21esta es la interpretación, oh rey, y este es el decreto del Altísimo que ha de cumplirse en mi señor, el rey: This is the interpretation of the judgment of the Most High, which has reached my lord, the king.22Te echarán de entre los hombres, y habitarás con las bestias del campo. Te darán de comer hierba como a los bueyes, serás mojado con el rocío del cielo, y pasarán sobre ti siete tiempos, hasta que conozcas que el Altísimo es dueño del reino de los hombres y lo da a quien quiere. They will expel you from among men, and your dwelling will be with the beasts and the wild animals, and you will eat hay like an ox, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Likewise, seven periods of time will pass over you, until you know that the Supreme One rules over the kingdom of men, and he gives it to whomever he wills.23Y en cuanto a la orden de dejar el tronco con las raíces del árbol, (esto significa que) te quedarás con tu reino cuando reconozcas que es el cielo el que tiene la potestad. But, since he commanded that the stump of its roots, that is, of the tree, should be left behind, your kingdom will be left for you, after you have realized that power is from divinity.24Por eso, oh rey, te sea grato mi consejo, redime tus pecados con obras de justicia, y tus iniquidades con obras de misericordia para con los pobres. Tal vez así se prolongara tu prosperidad.” Because of this, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you. And redeem your sins with alms, and your iniquities with mercy towards the poor. Perhaps he will forgive your offenses.”25Todo esto se cumplió en el rey Nabucodonosor. All these things came upon king Nebuchadnezzar.26Al cabo de doce meses, mientras se paseaba sobre el palacio real de Babilonia, After the end of twelve months, he was taking a walk in the palace of Babylon.27el rey habló y dijo: “¿No es esta Babilonia, la grande, que yo he edificado para capital de mi reino, con la fuerza de mi poder y para la gloria de mi majestad?” And the king spoke out loud, saying, “Isn’t this the great Babylon, which I have built, as the home of the kingdom, by the strength of my power and in the glory of my excellence?”28Aún estaba la palabra en la boca del rey, cuando bajó del cielo una voz: “A ti se te anuncia, oh rey Nabucodonosor, que el reino se ha ido de ti. And while the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice rushed down from heaven, “To you, O king Nebuchadnezzar, it is said: ‘Your kingdom will be taken away from you,29Te echarán de entre los hombres y habitarás con las bestias del campo; te darán de comer hierba como a los bueyes, y pasarán sobre ti siete tiempos hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo es dueño del reino de los hombres, y lo da a quien quiere.” and they will expel you from among men, and your dwelling will be with the beasts and the wild animals. You will eat hay like an ox, and seven times will pass over you, until you know that the Supreme One rules in the kingdom of men, and he gives it to whomever he wills.’ ”30En aquella misma hora se cumplió en Nabucodonosor esta palabra: fue expulsado de entre los hombres, comía hierba como los bueyes, y su cuerpo se mojaba con el rocío del cielo, hasta que los cabellos le crecieron como (plumas) de águila, y las uñas como las de las aves. The same hour, the sentence was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar, and he was driven away from among men, and he ate hay like an ox, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair increased like the feathers of eagles, and his nails like those of birds.31“Mas al cabo de los días, yo, Nabucodonosor, levanté mis ojos hacia el cielo, y recobré mi juicio. Entonces bendije al Altísimo, y alabé y glorifiqué al que vive eternamente, cuya dominación es dominación eterna y cuyo reino perdura de generación en generación. Therefore, at the end of these days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my mind was restored to me. And I blessed the Most High, and I praised and glorified him who lives forever. For his power is an everlasting power, and his kingdom is from generation to generation.32Todos los habitantes de la tierra son (para Él) una nada; Él dispone según su voluntad del ejército del cielo y de los moradores de la tierra. No hay quien pueda detener su mano, y decirle: «¿Qué es lo que haces?» And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him. For he acts according to his own will, with the inhabitants of the earth just as with the holy inhabitants of heaven. And there is no one who can resist his hand, or say to him, “Why have you done this?”33Al mismo tiempo recobré mi juicio y me fueron devueltos, para gloria de mi reino, mi majestad y mi esplendor. Vinieron a buscarme mis consejeros y mis magnates, y fui restablecido en mi reino, y se acrecentó aún mi poderío. At the same time, my mind returned to me, and I arrived at the honor and glory of my kingdom. And my appearance was given back to me. And my nobles and my magistrates needed me. And I was restored to my kingdom, and even greater majesty was added to me.34Ahora, pues, yo, Nabucodonosor, alabo y ensalzo y glorifico al Rey del cielo; pues todas sus obras son verdad, y sus caminos justicia, y Él puede humillar a quienes proceden con soberbia.” Therefore I, Nebuchadnezzar, now praise, and magnify, and glorify the King of heaven, because all his works and the judgments of his way are true, and those who go forth in arrogance, he is able to bring low.
