1Ahora, oh Israel, escucha las leyes y los decretos que os enseño a practicar para que viváis y entréis a poseer la tierra que Yahvé vuestro Dios os ha de dar. “And now, O Israel, listen to the precepts and judgments which I am teaching to you, so that, by doing these, you may live, and you may enter and possess the land, which the Lord, the God of your fathers, will give to you.2No añadáis nada a lo que os prescribo, ni quitéis nada de ello; antes guardad los mandamientos de Yahvé, vuestro Dios, que os ordeno. You shall not add to the word which I speak to you, neither shall you take away from it. Preserve the commandments of the Lord your God which I am teaching to you.3Vuestros ojos han visto lo que hizo Yahvé contra Baalfegor; pues Yahvé, vuestro Dios, ha extirpado de en medio de vosotros todos los que siguieron a Baalfegor. Your eyes have seen all that the Lord has done against Baal-peor, in what manner he has crushed all of his worshippers from among you.4Vosotros, empero, los que permanecisteis fieles a Yahvé, vuestro Dios, estáis al presente todos con vida. But you who adhere to the Lord your God are all still alive, to the present day.5Mirad: os enseño leyes y decretos, como Yahvé, mi Dios, me ha mandado, para que los practiquéis en el país que vais a poseer. You know that I have taught you precepts as well as justices, just as the Lord my God has commanded me. And so shall you do in the land that you will possess.6Observadlos y ponedlos en práctica; porque en esto consistirá vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia a los ojos de las naciones, que al conocer todas estas leyes dirán: En verdad, un pueblo sabio y entendido es esta gran nación. And you shall observe and fulfill these in practice. For this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, so that, upon hearing all these precepts, they may say: ‘Lo, a wise and understanding people, a great nation.’7Porque ¿qué nación hay tan grande que tenga dioses tan cercanos a sí como Yahvé, Dios nuestro, está cerca de nosotros siempre que lo invocamos? Neither is there any other nation so great, which has its gods so near to them, as our God is present to all our petitions.8¿Y qué nación hay tan grande que tenga leyes y preceptos tan justos como toda esta Ley que yo hoy os pongo delante? For what other nation is there so renowned as to have ceremonies, and just judgments, and the entire law that I will set forth today before your eyes?9Pero ten cuidado y guarda bien tu alma, para que no olvides las cosas que han visto tus ojos, ni se aparten de tu corazón en ningún momento de tu vida; antes bien, enséñalas a tus hijos y a los hijos de tus hijos. And so, guard yourself and your soul carefully. You should not forget the words that your eyes have seen, and do not let them be cut away from your heart, throughout all the days of your life. You shall teach them to your sons and to your grandsons,10Ten presente el día que estuviste delante de Yahvé, Dios tuyo, en el Horeb, cuando Yahvé me dijo: Junta al pueblo para que oigan mis palabras y aprendan a temerme todo el tiempo que vivan sobre la tierra y las enseñen a sus hijos. from the day on which you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord spoke to me, saying: ‘Gather the people to me, so that they may listen to my words, and may learn to fear me, throughout all the time that they are alive on earth, and so that they may teach their children.’11Entonces os acercasteis, y estuvisteis al pie del monte, mientras el monte ardía en fuego que se elevaba hasta lo más alto del cielo, entre oscuridad y nube y densas tinieblas. And you approached the base of the mountain, which was burning even toward heaven. And there was a darkness upon it, and a cloud, and a mist.12Y Yahvé os habló de en medio del fuego; oísteis el sonido de las palabras, pero no visteis figura alguna; era solo una voz. And the Lord spoke to you from the midst of fire. You heard the voice of his words, but you did not see any form at all.13El os promulgó su pacto y os mandó observarlo: los diez Mandamientos, que escribió en dos tablas de piedra. And he revealed his covenant to you, which he instructed you to carry out, and the ten words which he wrote on two tablets of stone.14En aquel tiempo me mandó que os enseñase leyes y preceptos que debíais practicar en el país adonde vais a pasar para tomarlo en posesión. And he commanded me, at that time, that I should teach you the ceremonies and judgments which you must carry out, in the land that you shall possess.15Guardad bien vuestras almas —pues no visteis figura alguna el día que Yahvé habló con vosotros en el Horeb, de en medio del fuego— And so, guard your souls carefully. You saw no likeness on the day that the Lord God spoke to you on Horeb from the midst of fire.16no sea que corrompiéndoos os hagáis estatuas, figuras de ídolos, imágenes de hombre o de mujer, Otherwise, perhaps being deceived, you might have made a graven image, or an image of male or female,17representación de alguna de las bestias que viven sobre la tierra, imagen de cualquier ave que vuela debajo del cielo, a likeness of any of the beasts, which are upon the earth, or of birds, which fly under heaven,18figura de algún animal que se arrastra sobre el suelo, o imagen de peces que viven en las aguas debajo de la tierra; or of reptiles, which move across the earth, or of fish, which abide in the waters under the earth.19y no sea que alzando los ojos a los cielos, y viendo el sol, la luna y las estrellas con todo el ejército del cielo, te dejes seducir postrándote ante ellos y dando culto a esas creaturas que Yahvé, tu Dios, ha dado en suerte a todas las naciones debajo de todo el cielo. Otherwise, perhaps lifting up your eyes to heaven, you might look upon the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, and being deceived by error, you might adore and worship these things, which the Lord your God created for the service of all the nations, which are under heaven.20A vosotros, en cambio, os ha tomado Yahvé, y os ha sacado de aquel horno de hierro, Egipto, para que seáis el pueblo de su herencia, como al presente lo sois. But the Lord has taken you up, and led you away from the iron furnaces of Egypt, in order to have a people of inheritance, just as it is to the present day.21Contra mí, empero, se irritó Yahvé por culpa vuestra, y juró que no pasaría yo el Jordán, ni entraría en aquella excelente tierra que Yahvé, Dios tuyo, te va a dar en posesión. And the Lord became angry against me because of your words, and he swore that I would not cross over the Jordan, nor enter into the excellent land, which he will give to you.22Pues voy a morir en esta tierra, y no voy a pasar el Jordán. Vosotros sí lo pasaréis y heredaréis esa excelente tierra. Behold, I shall die on this soil. I shall not cross over the Jordan. You shall cross it, and you shall possess the singular land.23Guardaos de olvidaros del pacto que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, ha hecho con vosotros, ni os hagáis estatuas o figuras de cuanto Yahvé, tu Dios, te ha prohibido. Be careful, lest you at some time forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he has formed with you, and lest you make for yourselves a graven likeness of those things which the Lord has prohibited to be made.24Porque Yahvé, tu Dios, es un fuego devorador, un Dios celoso. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.25Si después de haber engendrado hijos e hijos de hijos y morado largo tiempo en la tierra, os corrompiereis, fabricando estatuas o imágenes de cualquier cosa, haciendo lo que es malo a los ojos de Yahvé, vuestro Dios y provocando su ira, When you will have conceived sons and grandsons while abiding in the land, and if, having been deceived, you make for yourselves any likeness, accomplishing evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to wrath,26invoco hoy por testigo contra vosotros el cielo y la tierra, de que pronto seréis exterminados de la tierra adonde vais, pasando el Jordán para tomarla en posesión. No viviréis mucho tiempo en ella, sino que seréis del todo extirpados. I call heaven and earth as witnesses this day, that you shall quickly perish from the land, which, when you have crossed over the Jordan, you will possess. You will not live in it for a long time; instead, the Lord will destroy you.27Yahvé os dispersará entre los pueblos, y quedaréis pocos en número entre las naciones adonde Yahvé os ha de llevar. And he will scatter you among all the nations, and few of you will remain among those nations, to which the Lord will lead you.28Y allí serviréis a dioses, obra de manos de hombres, de leño y de piedra, que no ven ni oyen ni comen ni huelen. And there, you will serve gods which were fabricated by the hands of men: gods of wood and of stone, who neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.29Desde allí buscarás a Yahvé, Dios tuyo, y le hallarás, si le buscas con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma. And when you will seek the Lord your God in that place, you shall find him, if only you seek him with all your heart, and in all the tribulation of your soul.30En tu angustia, cuando vinieren sobre ti todas estas cosas, en los últimos tiempos, te convertirás a Yahvé, tu Dios, y escucharás su voz; After all these things which have been foretold have found you, in the end time, you shall return to the Lord your God, and you will hear his voice.31porque Yahvé, tu Dios, es un Dios misericordioso; no te abandonará, ni te destruirá, ni se olvidará del pacto que juró a tus padres. For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon you, nor will he entirely destroy you, nor will he forget the covenant, which he swore to your fathers.32Pregunta, te ruego, a los tiempos antiguos que te han precedido, desde el día en que creó Dios al hombre sobre la tierra, y de un cabo del cielo al otro, si jamás se ha visto cosa tan grande como esta o si se ha oído cosa semejante. Inquire concerning the days of antiquity, which were before you, from the day when God created man upon the earth, from one end of heaven to another, if anything similar has ever occurred, or whether any such thing has ever been known,33¿Hay por ventura pueblo alguno que oyese la voz de Dios que le hablaba de en medio del fuego, como tú lo oíste, sin perder la vida? that a people would hear the voice of God, speaking from the midst of fire, just as you have heard it, and live,34¿O hay dios alguno que viniese a escoger para sí un pueblo de entre los otros, con pruebas, señales y maravillas, y con guerra, mano fuerte, brazo extendido y proezas estupendas, como todo lo que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, hizo por vosotros en Egipto ante tus mismos ojos? whether God has acted so as to enter and take for himself a nation from the midst of the nations, by means of tests, signs, and wonders, by means of fighting, and a strong hand, and an outstretched arm, and terrible visions, in accord with all the things which the Lord your God has accomplished for you in Egypt, in the sight of your eyes.35A ti se te ha mostrado esto, para que sepas que Yahvé es Dios y no hay otro fuera de Él. So may you know that the Lord himself is God, and there is no other beside him.36Desde el cielo te hizo oír su voz para enseñarte; y sobre la tierra te ha mostrado su gran fuego, y de en medio del fuego has oído sus palabras. He has caused you to hear his voice from heaven, so that he might teach you. And he showed you his exceedingly great fire on earth, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire.37Por cuanto amó a tus padres, eligió a sus descendientes después de ellos y te sacó de Egipto yendo delante de ti con su gran poder, For he loved your fathers, and he chose their offspring after them. And he led you away from Egypt, advancing before you with his great power,38para expulsar a tu paso naciones más grandes y más fuertes que tú, para introducirte y darte en herencia su tierra como se ve al presente. so as to wipe away, upon your arrival, nations, very great and stronger than you, and so as to lead you in, and to present to you their land as a possession, just as you discern in the present day.39Reconócelo en este día y revuélvelo en tu corazón: Yahvé es Dios arriba en el cielo y abajo en la tierra y no hay otro. Therefore, know on this day and consider in your heart, that the Lord himself is God in heaven above, and on earth below, and there is no other.40Guarda sus leyes y sus mandamientos, que hoy te ordeno, para que te vaya bien, a ti y a tus hijos después de ti, y para que sean muchos tus días sobre la tierra que Yahvé, tu Dios, te dará para siempre”. Keep his precepts and commandments, which I am teaching to you, so that it may be well with you, and with your sons after you, and so that you may remain for a long time upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.”41Entonces Moisés destinó tres ciudades del otro lado del Jordán, al oriente, Then Moses set aside three cities, across the Jordan toward the eastern region,42para que allí se refugiara el homicida que sin querer y sin previa enemistad hubiese matado a su prójimo, y para que huyendo a una de dichas ciudades, salve su vida: so that anyone might flee to these if he has killed his neighbor unwillingly, who was not his enemy a day or two earlier, and so that he would be able to escape to one of these cities:43Béser en el desierto, en la llanura, para los rubenitas; Ramot en Galaad para los gaditas; y Golán, en Basan, para los de Manasés. Bezer in the wilderness, which is situated in the plains of the tribe of Ruben; and Ramoth in Gilead, which is in the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, which is in the tribe of Manasseh.44Esta es la ley que Moisés puso ante los ojos de los hijos de Israel. This is the law, which Moses set forth before the sons of Israel.45Estos son los testimonios, las leyes y los preceptos que Moisés dio a los hijos de Israel cuando salieron de Egipto, And these are the testimonies and ceremonies as well as judgments, which he spoke to the sons of Israel, when they departed from Egypt,46al otro lado del Jordán, en el valle frente a Betfegor, en el país de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón y a quien derrotaron Moisés y los hijos de Israel al salir estos de Egipto. across the Jordan, in the valley opposite the shrine of Peor, in the land of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses struck down.
