Deuteronomio 5
1Moisés convocó a todo Israel y le dijo: “Oye, Israel, las leyes y los preceptos que hoy intimo a vuestros oídos, aprendedlos y guardadlos para ponerlos en práctica. And Moses summoned all of Israel, and he said to them: “Listen, O Israel, to the ceremonies and judgments, which I am speaking to your ears on this day. Learn them, and fulfill them in deed.2Yahvé, nuestro Dios, hizo con nosotros alianza en el Horeb. The Lord our God formed a covenant with us at Horeb.3No con nuestros padres hizo Yahvé esta alianza, sino con nosotros, que hoy todos estamos aquí y todavía vivimos. He did not make the covenant with our fathers, but with us, who are alive and in the present time.4Cara a cara habló Yahvé con vosotros en el monte, desde en medio del fuego, He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.5—yo estaba entonces entre Yahvé y vosotros, para comunicaros la palabra de Yahvé; porque teníais miedo del fuego y no subisteis al monte— Dijo así: I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said:6‘Yo soy Yahvé, tu Dios, que te saqué de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de la servidumbre. ‘I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.7No tendrás otros dioses delante de Mí. You shall not have strange gods in my sight.8No te harás estatua o imagen alguna de cuanto hay arriba en el cielo, ni de cuanto hay abajo en la tierra, ni de lo que se halla en las aguas debajo de la tierra; You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor the likeness of anything, which is in heaven above, or on earth below, or which abides in the waters under the earth.9no las adorarás ni les darás culto, porque Yo, Yahvé, tu Dios, soy un Dios celoso, que castigo la iniquidad de los padres en los hijos, hasta la tercera y cuarta generación de los que me aborrecen, You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things. For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,10y que uso de misericordia hasta mil generaciones de los que me aman y guardan mis mandamientos. and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love me and keep my precepts.11No tomarás en vano el nombre de Yahvé, tu Dios, porque Yahvé no dejará impune al que tomare su nombre en vano. You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.12Guarda el día de sábado para santificarlo, como te lo ha mandado Yahvé, tu Dios. Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you.13Seis días trabajarás, y harás todo tu trabajo; For six days, you shall labor and do all your work.14mas el día séptimo es día de descanso consagrado a Yahvé, tu Dios, no hagas trabajo alguno, ni tú, ni tu hijo, ni tu hija, ni tu siervo, ni tu sierva, ni tu buey, ni tu asno, ni ninguna bestia tuya, ni el extranjero que mora dentro de tus puertas para que descanse tu siervo y tu sierva como tú. The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do.15Acuérdate de que fuiste siervo en el país de Egipto y que Yahvé, tu Dios, te sacó de allí con mano fuerte y con brazo extendido; por eso Yahvé, tu Dios, te ha mandado guardar el día de sábado. Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.16Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, como te ha mandado Yahvé, tu Dios, para que vivas largo tiempo y te vaya bien sobre la tierra que Yahvé, tu Dios, te va a dar. Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.17No matarás. You shall not murder.18No cometerás adulterio. And you shall not commit adultery.19No hurtarás. And you shall not commit theft.20No dirás falso testimonio contra tu prójimo. Neither shall you speak false testimony against your neighbor.21No codiciarás la mujer de tu prójimo, ni desearás la casa de tu prójimo, ni su campo, ni su siervo, ni su sierva, ni su buey, ni su asno, ni cosa alguna que sea de tu prójimo.’ You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his woman servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything out of all that is his.’22Estas son las palabras que Yahvé, con poderosa voz, dirigió a toda vuestra asamblea en el monte, desde el fuego, la nube y las tinieblas; y no añadió más. Las escribió sobre dos tablas de piedra, las cuales Él me entregó. The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, which he delivered to me.23Mas vosotros, cuando oísteis la voz de en medio de las tinieblas, mientras el monte estaba en llamas, os acercasteis a mí, todos los jefes de las tribus y vuestros ancianos, Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and you saw the mountain burning, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth. And you said:24y me dijisteis: ‘Mira, Yahvé, nuestro Dios, nos ha manifestado su gloria y su grandeza, y hemos oído su voz de en medio del fuego. Hoy hemos visto a Dios hablar con el hombre, sin que este haya perdido la vida. ‘Behold, the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness. We have heard his voice from the midst of fire, and we have proven today that, though God is speaking with man, man has lived.25Ahora, pues, ¿por qué hemos de morir devorados por este gran fuego? Pues si seguimos oyendo la voz de Yahvé, nuestro Dios, moriremos. Therefore, why should we die, and why should this very great fire devour us? For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we will die.26Porque ¿quién de todos los hombres ha oído la voz de Dios vivo hablando de en medio del fuego, como nosotros, y no ha perdido la vida? What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it, and be able to live?27Acércate tú, y oye todo lo que dijere Yahvé, nuestro Dios; y tú nos comunicarás todo cuanto Yahvé, nuestro Dios, te indique, y nosotros lo oiremos y cumpliremos.’ Instead, you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you. And you will speak to us, and we will listen and do these things.’28Oyó Yahvé la voz de vuestras palabras cuando me hablabais, y dijo Yahvé: ‘He oído el son de las palabras que este pueblo te ha dicho; está bien todo lo que dicen. But when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you. All this, they have spoken well.29¡Ojalá que siempre tengan este sentir, para que me teman y guarden en todo tiempo todos mis mandamientos, a fin de que sean felices ellos y sus hijos para siempre! Who will grant to them to have such a mind, so that they may fear me, and may keep all my commandments at all times, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?30Anda y diles: Retiraos a vuestras tiendas. Go and say to them: Return to your tents.31Pero tú quédate aquí conmigo, y Yo te diré todos los mandamientos, leyes y preceptos que les has de enseñar, para que los pongan por obra en la tierra que les voy a dar en herencia.’ But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments. These, you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land, which I will give to them as a possession.32Poned, pues, cuidado en cumplir lo que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, os ha mandado. No declinéis ni a la diestra ni a la izquierda. And so, keep and do the things which the Lord God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.33Seguid en todo el camino que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, os ha mandado, para que viváis y prosperéis y tengáis larga vida en la tierra que vais a heredar. For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, so that you may live, and it may be well with you, and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’ ”
