Eclesiastés 1
1Palabras del Predicador, hijo de David, rey de Jerusalén. The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.2Vanidad de vanidades, decía el Predicador; vanidad de vanidades; todo es vanidad. Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!3¿Qué provecho saca el hombre de todo el trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol? What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?4Una generación se va y otra generación viene, mas la tierra es siempre la misma. A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.5El sol se levanta, el sol se pone, y camina presuroso hacia su lugar, donde nace (de nuevo). The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,6El viento se dirige hacia el mediodía, declina luego hacia el norte; gira y gira sin cesar el viento, y así retorna girando. it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.7Todos los ríos van al mar, y el mar nunca se llena; al lugar de donde los ríos vienen, allá vuelven para correr de nuevo. All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.8Todas las cosas son afanes, más de cuanto se puede decir. Los ojos nunca se hartan de ver, ni los oídos se llenan de oír. Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.9Lo que fue, eso será; lo que se hizo, lo mismo se hará; nada hay de nuevo bajo el sol. What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.10Si hay una cosa de que dicen: “Mira, esto es nuevo”, también esa existió ya en los tiempos que nos precedieron. There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.11No queda memoria de las cosas pasadas, ni recuerdo de las futuras entre los que han de venir. There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.12Yo, el Predicador, fui rey sobre Israel, en Jerusalén. I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.13Y me puse en el corazón averiguar y escudriñar, por medio de la sabiduría, todo cuanto se hace debajo del cielo. Esta dura tarea ha dado Dios a los hijos de los hombres, para que se ocupen en ella. And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.14He visto todo cuanto se hace bajo el sol, y he aquí que todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento. I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.15Lo torcido no puede enderezarse, y es imposible contar las cosas que faltan. The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.16Dije para mí esto: “Mira cómo soy grande; soy más sabio que cuantos antes de mí fueron en Jerusalén; inmensa es la sabiduría y ciencia que mi corazón ha visto.” I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.17Propuse en mi ánimo conocer la sabiduría, y asimismo la necedad y la insensatez; y aprendí que también esto es correr tras el viento. And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.18Pues donde hay mucho saber hay mucha molestia; quien aumenta la ciencia, aumenta el dolor. Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.
