¹“El muy grande Artajerjes, rey desde la India hasta Etiopía, a los príncipes y gobernadores de las ciento veinte y siete provincias sujetas a su imperio, salud. And this was the text of the letter: “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the leaders and generals of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, which are subject to his authority, greetings.²Siendo yo rey de muchísimas naciones, y habiendo sometido a mi dominio toda la tierra, no he querido en modo alguno abusar de la grandeza de mi poderío, sino antes bien gobernar a mis súbditos con clemencia y mansedumbre, para que pasando una vida tranquila, sin temor alguno, gozasen la paz deseada de todos los mortales. Although I have reigned over many nations and subjugated the whole world under my realm, I was by no means willing to abuse the greatness of this power, but to govern my subjects with clemency and leniency, so that they would settle into a quiet life, apart from any terror, and delight in peace, as all mortals would choose to do.³Consultando con mis consejeros cómo esto podría conseguirse, uno de ellos, llamado Amán, que aventajaba a los demás en sabiduría y lealtad y era el segundo después del rey, Yet, in asking my counselors how this might be able to be accomplished, one who excelled the others in wisdom and fidelity, and who was second after the king, named Haman,⁴me hizo conocer la existencia de un pueblo disperso por toda la tierra, que se gobierna con leyes nuevas, y que, oponiéndose a la costumbre de todas las gentes, menosprecia las órdenes de los reyes, y con sus disensiones turba la concordia de todas las naciones. explained to me that there was a people, scattered throughout the whole world, that used strange laws, and, acting against the customs of all peoples, despised the commandments of kings and violated the harmony of all nations with their dissension.⁵Lo cual entendido por Nos, viendo que esta sola nación, contraria a todo el género humano, sigue leyes perversas, desoye nuestros mandatos y perturba la paz y concordia de las provincias que Nos están sujetas: When we had learned this, seeing one nation rebellious against all mankind, having overthrown the usefulness of laws, and going against our orders, and disturbing the peace and harmony of the provinces subject to us,⁶hemos decretado que todos los que señalare Amán —el cual tiene la superintendencia de todas las provincias; y es el segundo después de Nos, y a quien honramos como a padre— sean exterminados por sus enemigos, juntamente con las mujeres e hijos, el día catorce del mes duodécimo de Adar, del presente año, sin que nadie los perdone; we commanded that whomever Haman, who is chief over all the provinces, and second after the king, and whom we honor in the place of a father, whomever he would point out should be destroyed by their enemies, with their wives and children, and that no one may take pity on them, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month Adar of this present year,⁷a fin de que esos hombres malvados, desciendan al infierno en un, mismo día, y se restituya a nuestro reino la paz que han turbado.” so that these guilty men, all on one day, may go down to the underworld, restoring to our empire the peace that they had disturbed.”⁸Hizo entonces Mardoqueo oración al Señor, haciendo memoria de todas Sus obras, Now Mordecai beseeched the Lord, remembering all his works,⁹y dijo: “Señor, Señor, Rey omnipotente, en tu poder están todas las cosas, y no hay quien pueda resistir a tu voluntad, si has resuelto salvar a Israel. and he said, “O Lord, Lord, almighty King, truly all things are possible for you, and there is no one who is able to resist your will, if you would determine to save Israel.¹⁰Tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra y todo cuanto en el ámbito del cielo se contiene. You are Lord of all, and there is no one who can resist your majesty.¹²Tú lo sabes todo, y sabes que no por altivez, no por desdén, ni por ambición de gloria he hecho esto de no adorar al soberbísimo Amán; You know everything, and you know that it was not out of arrogance or indignation or some desire for glory that I did this, so that I refused to adore the very proud Haman.¹³porque para salvar a Israel estaría dispuesto a besar con gusto aun las huellas de sus pies, (For I was freely prepared, for the sake of the salvation of Israel, to have willingly kissed even the footsteps of his feet.)¹⁴pero he temido trasladar a un hombre el honor debido a mi Dios, y adorar a ningún otro fuera del Dios mío. But I feared, lest I should transfer the honor of my God to a man, and lest I should adore anyone except my God.¹⁵Ahora oh Señor y Rey, Dios de Abrahán, apiádate de tu pueblo; porque nuestros enemigos buscan cómo perdernos y acabar con tu heredad. And now Lord, King, God of Abraham, may you have mercy on your people because our enemies want to destroy us and to erase your inheritance.¹⁶No menosprecies tu posesión, que para Ti has rescatado de Egipto. Do not despise your portion, which you have redeemed for yourself out of Egypt.¹⁷Escucha mi súplica, y muéstrate propicio a tu nación y a la heredad tuya, y convierte nuestro llanto en gozo, para que viviendo alabemos, Señor, tu nombre, y no cierres las bocas de los que te alaban.” Listen to my supplication, and be gracious to your lot and your token, and change our sorrow into gladness, so that, in living, we may praise your name, Lord; and do not close the mouths of those who sing to you.”¹⁸Todo Israel, orando unánimemente, clamó al Señor, pues una muerte cierta les amenazaba a todos. Likewise, all Israel cried out to the Lord with the same intention and supplication because certain death was hanging over them.
