1Después de esto, el rey ensalzó a Amán, hijo de Hamedata, agagita. Lo ensalzó y puso su silla sobre la de todos los príncipes que tenía. After this, king Artaxerxes exalted Haman, the son of Hammedatha, who was of Agag lineage, and he set his throne above all the rulers whom he had.2Por lo cual todos los siervos del rey que estaban a la puerta del rey, doblaban la rodilla y se postraban ante Amán; porque así lo había mandado el rey acerca de él. Solo Mardoqueo no doblaba la rodilla ni se postraba. And all the king’s servants, who passed by the doors of the palace, bent their knees and adored Haman, for so the ruler had instructed them. Only Mordecai did not bend his knee, nor adore him.3Por lo cual los siervos del rey que estaban a la puerta del rey, dijeron a Mardoqueo: “¿Por qué traspasas la orden del rey?” The king’s servants, who presided over the doors of the palace, said to him, “Why do you, more than the others, not observe the king’s command?”4Así le hablaban todos los días sin que él les hiciese caso. Al fin informaron a Amán para ver si Mardoqueo persistía en su resolución; porque les había dicho que era judío. And when they were saying this frequently, and he would not listen to them, they reported it to Haman, desiring to know whether he would continue in his resolution, for he had told them that he was a Jew.5Cuando vio Amán que Mardoqueo no doblaba la rodilla ni se postraba ante él, se llenó de cólera; Now when Haman had heard this, and had proved by a test that Mordecai did not bend his knee to him, nor adore him, he was very angry.6más reputando por nada alargar su mano solo contra Mardoqueo, de cuya nacionalidad le habían informado, procuró exterminar al pueblo de Mardoqueo, a todos los judíos que había en el reino entero de Asuero. And he considered it pointless to lay his hands on Mordecai alone, for he had heard that he was part of the Jewish people. And so he wanted more: to destroy the entire nation of the Jews, who were in the kingdom of Artaxerxes.7En el mes primero, que es el mes de Nisán, el año duodécimo del rey Asuero, se echó el “pur”, es decir, la suerte delante de Amán, para cada día y cada mes, (y salió) el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar. In the first month, which is called Nisan, in the twelfth year of the reign of Artaxerxes, the lot was cast into an urn, which in Hebrew is called Pur, in the presence of Haman, to determine on what day and in which month the Jewish people should be destroyed. And it turned out to be the twelfth month, which is called Adar.8Entonces dijo Amán al rey Asuero: “Hay un pueblo esparcido que vive disperso entre los pueblos de todas las provincias de tu reino. Sus leyes son diferentes de las de todos los pueblos, y no cumplen ellos las leyes del rey. No le conviene al rey tolerarlos. And Haman said to king Artaxerxes, “There is a people dispersed throughout all the provinces of your kingdom and separated one from another, who make use of unusual laws and ceremonies, and who, in addition, show contempt for the king’s ordinances. And you know very well that it is not expedient for your kingdom that they should become insolent through independence.9Si al rey le parece bien escríbase (una orden) según la cual sean destruidos; y yo pagaré diez mil talentos de plata en manos de los administradores de la hacienda, para que los entreguen a la tesorería del rey.” If it pleases you, declare that they may be destroyed, and I will weigh out ten thousand talents to the keepers of your treasury.”10Con esto el rey quitó de su mano su anillo de sellar, y lo dio a Amán, hijo de Hamedata, agagita, enemigo de los judíos. And so the king took the ring that he used, from his own hand, and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha, of Agag lineage, enemy of the Jews.11Y dijo el rey a Amán: “La plata sea para ti y en cuanto al pueblo, haz con él lo que mejor te parezca.” And he said to him, “Let the silver, which you promise, be for yourself. As for the people, do with them as it pleases you.”12Fueron llamados los secretarios del rey en el mes primero, el día trece del mismo; y conforme a todas las órdenes de Amán se escribió a los sátrapas del rey, a los gobernadores que había en cada provincia, y a los príncipes de cada pueblo; a cada provincia en su escritura y a cada pueblo en su lenguaje. Se escribió las cartas en nombre del rey Asuero, y fueron selladas con el anillo del rey. And the scribes of the king were summoned, in the first month Nisan, on the thirteenth day of the same month. And it was written, as Haman had commanded, to all the king’s governors, and to the judges of the provinces, and to various peoples, so that each people could read and hear according to their various languages, in the name of king Artaxerxes. And the letters were sealed with his ring.13Las cartas se enviaron por medio de correos a todas las provincias del rey, mandando destruir, matar y exterminar a todos los judíos, jóvenes y viejos, niños y mujeres, en un mismo día, el trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, y saquear sus bienes. These were sent by the king’s messengers to all the provinces, so as to kill and destroy all the Jews, from children all the way to the elderly, even little children and women, on one day, that is, on the thirteenth of the twelfth month, which is called Adar, and to plunder their goods, even their necessities.14Una copia del escrito que había de publicarse como edicto en cada provincia, fue notificada a todos los pueblos, a fin de que estuvieran preparados para aquel día. And the effect of the letters was this: that all provinces would know and prepare for the prescribed day.15Los correos salieron a toda prisa, cumpliendo la orden del rey. Cuando el edicto se publicó en Susa, la capital, el rey y Amán se sentaron a beber, en tanto que la ciudad de Susa estaba consternada. The couriers, who had been sent, hurried to complete the king’s command, but the edict was hung up in Susa immediately. And the king and Haman celebrated a feast, while all the Jews in the city were weeping.
