Ester 4
1Cuando Mardoqueo supo lo sucedido, rasgó sus vestidos, se cubrió de saco y ceniza, y yendo por medio de la ciudad y dando alaridos grandes y amargos, When Mordecai had heard this, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth, strewing ashes on his head, and he cried out with a loud voice in the main street of the city, revealing the anguish of his soul.2llegó hasta delante de la puerta del rey, pues nadie podía franquear la puerta del rey vestido de saco. And he continued with this lamenting, even up to the gate of the palace, for no one clothed with sackcloth is permitted to enter the king’s court.3En todas las provincias, dondequiera que llegó la orden del rey y su edicto, hubo entre los judíos gran duelo y ayuno y lágrimas y llanto, acostándose muchos en saco y ceniza. Likewise, in all provinces, towns, and places where the king’s cruel decision arrived, there was extraordinary mourning among the Jews with fasting, wailing, and weeping, with many using sackcloth and ashes for their bed.4Cuando las siervas y eunucos vinieron a darle parte a Ester, la reina se atemorizó mucho, y envió vestidos a Mardoqueo para que los vistiese y se quitase el saco; más él no los aceptó. Then Esther’s maids and eunuchs went in and informed her. When she heard it, she was shocked, and she sent a garment to clothe him and to take away the sackcloth, but he would not accept it.5Entonces Ester llamó a Atac, uno de los eunucos que el rey había designado para asistirla, y le envió a preguntar a Mardoqueo, para saber qué era eso y por qué lo hacía. And she sent for Hathach the eunuch, whom the king had appointed to minister to her, and she instructed him to go to Mordecai and to discern from him why he was doing this.6Fue Atac a Mardoqueo, que estaba en la plaza de la ciudad, delante de la puerta del rey. And departing, Hathach went to Mordecai, who was standing in the street of the city, in front of the palace entrance.7Y Mardoqueo le contó todo lo que había acontecido, indicándole también la suma de dinero que Amán había prometido pagar a la tesorería del rey, para poder exterminar a los judíos. He told him everything that had happened, how Haman had promised to transfer silver into the king’s treasury for the death of the Jews.8Le dio también copia del edicto que se había promulgado en Susa para exterminarlos, a fin de que lo mostrase a Ester, para su información, y la exhortase a presentarse al rey a pedirle compasión y rogarle por su pueblo. Also, he gave him a copy of the edict that was hanging up in Susa, so that he would show it to the queen and advise her to go in to the king and beg him on behalf of her people.9Vino Atac a referir a Ester lo que había dicho Mardoqueo. And Hathach returned and informed Esther of all that Mordecai had said.10Entonces respondió Ester a Atac, y le mandó decir a Mardoqueo: She answered him, and ordered him say to Mordecai:11“Todos los servidores del rey, y la gente de las provincias del rey, saben que hay una ley, según la cual cualquiera persona, hombre o mujer, que se presente al rey en el atrio interior, sin ser llamada, será entregada a la muerte, salvo que el rey extienda hacia ella el cetro de oro para que viva; y yo no he sido llamada para ir al rey en estos treinta días.” “All the servants of the king and all the provinces that are under his realm understand that anyone, whether man or woman, who enters the king’s inner court, who has not been summoned, is immediately to be put to death without any delay, unless the king should happen to extend the golden scepter to him, as a sign of clemency, so that he will be able to live. How then can I go in to the king, when, for thirty days now, I have not been called to him?”12Cuando refirieron a Mardoqueo las palabras de Ester, And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.13este mandó que respondiesen a Ester: “No vayas a imaginarte que tú, por estar en la casa del rey, te salvarás (sola) de entre todos los judíos; And when Mordecai had heard this, he again sent word to Esther, saying, “Do not think that you will save so much as your own soul, just because you are in the king’s house and are above all the Jews.14pues si ahora callas, socorro y libertad para los judíos vendrá de otra parte, más tú y la casa de tu padre pereceréis. ¿Y quién sabe si no es para un momento como este que tú has llegado a la realeza?” For, if you remain silent now, the Jews will be delivered through some other opportunity, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for this reason, so that you would be prepared for such a time as this?”15Entonces Ester mandó a Mardoqueo esta respuesta: And again Esther sent to Mordecai in these words:16“Ve, y junta a todos los judíos, cuantos estén en Susa; y ayunad por mí, y no comáis ni bebáis durante tres días, ni de noche ni de día. Yo también ayunaré del mismo modo con mis siervas; y después iré al rey, aunque no sea conforme a la ley; y si debo morir, moriré.” “Go and gather together all the Jews whom you will find in Susa, and pray for me. Neither eat nor drink for three days and three nights, and I will fast with my handmaids similarly, and then I will go in to the king, doing what is against the law, not having been called, and so expose myself to mortal danger.”17Con esto Mardoqueo se fue e hizo cuanto Ester le había encargado. And so Mordecai went, and he did everything that Esther had instructed him.
