Ester 8
1Aquel mismo día el rey Asuero dio a la reina Ester la casa de Amán, el enemigo de los judíos; y Mardoqueo fue presentado al rey, pues Ester había dado a conocer su parentesco. On that day king, Artaxerxes gave the house of Haman, the adversary of the Jews, to queen Esther, and Mordecai entered before the king. For Esther had confessed to him that he was her paternal uncle.2Entonces tomó el rey su anillo de sellar, que había retirado de Amán, y lo dio a Mardoqueo. Ester, por su parte, puso a Mardoqueo sobre la casa de Amán. And the king took the ring, which he had ordered to be taken from Haman, and he handed it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed Mordecai over her house.3Ester volvió a hablar al rey y, echándose a sus pies y con lágrimas en los ojos le rogó que frustrara la malicia de Amán agagita y los planes que este había tramado contra los judíos. Not content with these things, she threw herself down at the king’s feet and wept, and, speaking to him, pleaded that he would give orders that the malice of Haman the Agagite, and his most wicked schemes, which he had contrived against the Jews, would be made ineffective.4Y extendió el rey hacia Ester el cetro de oro, de modo que Ester pudo levantarse. Y puesta en pie delante del rey, But he, as was the custom, extended the golden scepter with his hand, which was the sign of clemency, and she rose up and stood before him.5dijo: “Si es del agrado del rey y si he hallado gracia a sus ojos; si la propuesta conviene al rey y si yo soy agradable a sus ojos, (pido) que sean invalidadas por escrito las cartas inspiradas por Amán, hijo de Hamedata, agagita, las cuales este escribió para exterminar a los judíos que están en todas las provincias del rey; And she said, “If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his eyes, and my request is not seen to be disagreeable to him, I beg you that the former letters of Haman, the traitor and enemy of the Jews, by which he instructed them to be destroyed in all the king’s provinces, may be corrected by new letters.6porque ¿cómo podré yo ver el mal que ha de venir sobre mi pueblo? ¿Y cómo podré ver el exterminio de mi raza?” For how will I be able to endure the murder and execution of my people?”7Respondió el rey Asuero a la reina Ester y a Mardoqueo el judío: “He aquí que he dado la casa de Amán a Ester, y él mismo ha sido colgado en una horca, por haber extendido su mano contra los judíos. And king Artaxerxes answered Esther the queen and Mordecai the Jew, “I have granted Haman’s house to Esther, and I have ordered him to be fastened to a cross, because he dared to lay hands on the Jews.8Escribid vosotros en nombre del rey, lo que bien os parezca respecto de los judíos, y selladlo con el anillo del rey; pues carta escrita en nombre del rey y sellada con el anillo real no puede ser revocada.” Therefore, write to the Jews, just as it pleases you, in the king’s name, sealing the letters with my ring.” For this was the custom, that letters which were sent in the king’s name and were sealed with his ring, no one would dare to contradict.9Fueron entonces llamados los secretarios del rey, en el mes tercero, o sea, en el mes de Siván, el día veinte y tres del mismo; y se escribió, conforme a todo lo que mandó Mardoqueo, a los judíos y a los sátrapas, los gobernadores y jefes de las provincias, desde la India hasta Etiopía, que eran ciento veinte y siete provincias; a cada provincia en su escritura, y a cada pueblo en su lengua, y también a los judíos en su escritura y lengua. Then the scribes and copyists were brought in, (now it was the time of the third month which is called Sivan,) on the twenty-third day of the month, and letters were written, as Mordecai wanted, to the Jews, and to the governors, and procurators, and judges, who presided over the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, from India all the way to Ethiopia: to one province and another, to one people and another, in accordance with their languages and letters, and to the Jews, exactly as they were able to read and hear.10Escribió (Mardoqueo) en nombre del rey Asuero y puso el sello con el anillo del rey; y envió las cartas por medio de correos montados en caballos veloces, de las caballerizas (del rey). And these letters, which were sent in the king’s name, had been signed with his ring, and were sent by swift couriers who were to rush in every direction, through all the provinces, so as to prevent the former letters with new messages.11(En estas cartas) concedía el rey a los judíos, que en cada ciudad se reuniesen para defender su vida y para destruir, matar y exterminar, con niños y mujeres, a cualquier gente armada de cualquier pueblo o provincia que los atacase, y también para saquear sus bienes, The king commanded them to bring together the Jews throughout each city, and to instruct them to join together, so as to make a stand for their lives, and to execute and destroy all their enemies, with their wives and children and their entire houses, and to plunder their spoil.12(y todo esto) en un mismo día en todas las provincias del rey Asuero: el trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar. And one day of retribution was established throughout all the provinces, namely, the thirteenth of the twelfth month Adar.13Copia de esta carta había de publicarse como edicto en cada una de las provincias, de manera que todos los pueblos supieran que los judíos aquel día estuviesen preparados para vengarse de sus enemigos. And such was the content of the letter, so that it would be made known in all lands and nations, which are subject to the authority of king Artaxerxes, that the Jews have been made ready to be vindicated of their enemies.14Los correos montados en caballos veloces partieron inmediatamente y a toda prisa, según la orden del rey. El edicto fue publicado también en Susa, la capital. And so the swift couriers departed in haste, carrying through the announcement, and the king’s edict was hung up in Susa.15Mardoqueo salió de la presencia del rey, con traje real de color de jacinto y blanco, con una gran corona de oro y un manto de lino fino y de púrpura; y la ciudad de Susa rebosaba de alborozo y alegría, But Mordecai, going forth from the palace and from the king’s presence, shone in royal apparel the color of hyacinth and of the sky, wearing a golden crown on his head, and clothed with a cloak of silk and purple. And all the city rejoiced and was joyful.16ya que para los judíos había luz y alegría y gozo y honra. But for the Jews, a new light seemed to rise; there was joy, honor, and dancing.17En cada provincia y en cada ciudad, dondequiera que llegaba la orden del rey y su edicto, hubo júbilo y alegría para los judíos, banquetes y fiestas. Y muchos de entre los pueblos del país se hicieron judíos; porque había caído sobre ellos el temor de los judíos. With all the peoples, cities, and provinces, wherever the king’s orders arrived, there was wonderful rejoicing, banquets and feasts, and a solemn holy day, so much so that many of the other nations joined themselves to their religious practices and ceremonies. For a great fear of the name of the Jews had overcome them all.
