Éxodo 18
1Jetró, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, supo todo lo que había hecho Dios en favor de Moisés e Israel, su pueblo: que Yahvé había sacado a Israel de Egipto. And when Jethro, the priest of Midian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all that God had done for Moses, and for his people Israel, and that the Lord had led Israel away from Egypt,2Y tomó Jetró, suegro de Moisés, a Seforá, mujer de Moisés, después de haberla (Moisés) despedido; he brought Zipporah, the wife of Moses, whom he was to return to him,3y a los dos hijos de este, de los cuales uno se llamaba Gersom, pues había dicho (Moisés): “Soy un extranjero en tierra extraña.” and her two sons, of whom one was called Gershom, (for his father said, “I have been a newcomer in a foreign land,”)4El otro se llamaba Eliéser, porque (Moisés) había dicho: “El Dios de mi padre fue mi protector y me ha librado de la espada del Faraón.” and the other in truth was Eliezer, (“For the God of my father,” he said, “is my helper, and has rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.”)5Vino, pues, Jetró, suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de este, al desierto, donde acampaba junto al monte de Dios. And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the desert, where he was encamped next to the mountain of God.6Y envió a decir a Moisés: “Yo, Jetró, tu suegro, vengo a ti con tu mujer, y con ella están sus dos hijos.” And he sent word to Moses, saying: “I, Jethro, your kinsman, have come to you, with your wife, and your two sons with her.”7Moisés salió al encuentro de su suegro, se prosternó y le besó. Y después de preguntarse mutuamente por su salud entraron en la tienda. And going out to meet his kinsman, he reverenced and kissed him. And they saluted each other with peaceful words. And when he had arrived at the tent,8Luego contó Moisés a su suegro todo lo que Yahvé había hecho al Faraón y a los egipcios, en favor de Israel; y todos los trabajos sufridos en el camino y cómo Yahvé los había librado. Moses explained to his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians on behalf of Israel, and all the hardships which had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had freed them.9Jetró se alegró de todo el bien que Yahvé había hecho a Israel, librándolo de la mano de los egipcios. And Jethro was gladdened over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, because he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians.10Y dijo Jetró: “¡Bendito sea Yahvé que os ha librado de la mano de los egipcios y de la mano del Faraón y ha salvado al pueblo del poder de los egipcios! And he said: “Blessed is the Lord, who has freed his people from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh; he has rescued his people from the hand of Egypt.11Ahora acabo de conocer que Yahvé es más grande que todos los dioses; pues en aquello mismo en que ellos se ensoberbecieron los ha castigado.” Now I know that the great Lord is above all gods. This is why they acted arrogantly against them.”12Después tomó Jetró, suegro de Moisés, un holocausto y sacrificios para (ofrecerlos) a Dios; y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a comer con el suegro de Moisés en presencia de Dios. And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, offered holocausts and sacrifices to God. And Aaron arrived with all the elders of Israel, in order to eat bread with him in the sight of God.13Al día siguiente se sentó Moisés para juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estaba delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde. Then, the next day, Moses sat down in order to judge the people, and they stood beside Moses from morning, even until evening.14Vio el suegro de Moisés todo lo que hacía para con el pueblo, y dijo: “¿Qué es esto que haces con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo permanece parado alrededor tuyo desde la mañana hasta la tarde?” And when, of course, his kinsman saw all that he did among the people, he said: “What is this that you do among the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand before you, from morning, even until evening?”15Contestó Moisés a su suegro: “Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios. And Moses answered him: “The people come to me seeking the verdict of God.16Cuando tienen un pleito, vienen a mí; y yo juzgo entre unos y otros, dándoles a conocer los preceptos de Dios y sus leyes.” And when any kind of dispute occurs among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to reveal the precepts of God and of his laws.”17Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: “No está bien lo que haces. But he said, “This is not good, what you are doing.18Te cansarás demasiado, tú y este pueblo que contigo está; porque este trabajo es superior a tus fuerzas; no podrás hacerlo tú solo. You will be consumed by foolish efforts, both you and this people who are with you. The task is beyond your strength; you will not be able bear it alone.19Oye, pues, ahora mi voz; yo te doy un consejo, y Dios sea contigo. Sé tú solamente el representante del pueblo delante de Dios, al cual presentarás los asuntos. But listen to my words and counsels, and then God will be with you. Be available to the people in that which pertains to God, so as to refer what they say to him,20Enséñales los preceptos y las leyes, y dales a conocer el camino que deben seguir, y las obras que han de practicar. and to reveal to the people the ceremonies, and the rituals of worship, and the way by which they should progress, and the work that they should do.21Y escoge de entre el pueblo hombres capaces, temerosos de Dios, hombres fieles y enemigos de la avaricia, y constitúyelos sobre ellos como jefes de mil, jefes de cien, jefes de cincuenta y jefes de diez. Then provide, from all of the people, men capable and fearing God, in whom there is truth and who hate avarice, and appoint from them tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens,22Ellos sean jueces del pueblo en todo tiempo; todo caso importante llévenlo a ti, mas en todos los asuntos de menor importancia decidan ellos. Así se aliviará tu carga, llevándola ellos contigo. who may judge the people at all times. Then, when anything greater will have occurred, they may refer it to you, and let them judge the lesser matters only. And so it may be lighter for you, the burden being divided among others.23Si haces esto, y Dios te lo manda, podrás sostenerte, y por su parte todo este pueblo podrá volver en paz a su lugar.” If you will do this, you will fulfill the orders of God, and you will be able to uphold his precepts. And this entire people will return to their places in peace.”24Moisés escuchó la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que había dicho. Having heard this, Moses did everything that he had suggested to him.25Escogió, pues, Moisés hombres capaces de entre todo Israel, y los constituyó jefes del pueblo, jefes de mil, jefes de cien, jefes de cincuenta y jefes de diez. And choosing virtuous men from all of Israel, he appointed them as leaders of the people: tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.26Estos juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; los asuntos graves los llevaban a Moisés; mas en todos los asuntos menores decidían ellos mismos. And they judged the people at all times. But whatever was more serious, they referred to him, and they judged easier matters only.27Después despidió Moisés a su suegro, el cual se volvió a su tierra. And he dismissed his kinsman, who, turning back, went to his own land.
