Éxodo 1
1Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto con Jacob, cada uno con su familia: These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:2Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,3Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,4Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.5Todos los descendientes nacidos de Jacob eran setenta almas. José estaba ya en Egipto. Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.6Luego murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación. When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,7Mas los hijos de Israel crecieron y se multiplicaron, y llegaron a ser numerosos y fuertes, y se llenó de ellos el país. the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.8Entretanto se alzó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey, que nada sabía de José; Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.9el cual dijo a su pueblo: “Mirad, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros. And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.10Tomemos, pues, precauciones contra él, no sea que siga multiplicándose, y en caso de venir sobre nosotros una guerra, se asocie también él a nuestros enemigos para combatirnos, y salga (después) del país.” Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”11Por lo cual pusieron sobre (Israel), sobrestantes de trabajos a fin de oprimirlos con sus cargas; y así edificaron para el Faraón ciudades almacenes: Pitom y Ramesés. And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.12Pero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más crecían y tanto más se multiplicaban, de modo que (los egipcios) tomaron aversión a los hijos de Israel. And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.13Entonces los egipcios redujeron a cruel servidumbre a los hijos de Israel, And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.14y les amargaron la vida con duros trabajos de arcilla y ladrillos, toda suerte de labores del campo y toda clase de servidumbre con que los oprimían por fuerza. And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.15El rey de Egipto dio también orden a las parteras de las hebreas, de las cuales una se llamaba Sifrá, y la otra Puá, Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)16diciéndoles: “Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos, averiguad el sexo; si es niño, matadlo; mas si es niña, vivirá.” instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”17Pero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron como les había mandado el rey de Egipto, sino que dejaban con vida a los niños. But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.18Por lo cual llamó el rey de Egipto a las parteras y les dijo: “¿Por qué hacéis esto y dejáis con vida a los niños?” And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”19Respondieron las parteras al Faraón: “Porque las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son robustas, y antes que a ellas llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz.” They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”20Recompensó Dios a las parteras; y se multiplicó el pueblo y se hizo muy poderoso. Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.21Y por haber temido las parteras a Dios, Él les dio numerosa prole. And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.22Entonces dio el Faraón a todo su pueblo esta orden: “Todo niño que naciere (a los hebreos) lo echaréis al río; mas a toda niña dejaréis con vida.” Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
