Éxodo 5
1Después se presentaron Moisés y Aarón al Faraón y le dijeron: “Así dice Yahvé, el Dios de Israel: Deja marchar a mi pueblo, para que me celebre una fiesta en el desierto.” After these things, Moses and Aaron entered, and they said to Pharaoh: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Release my people, so that they may sacrifice to me in the desert.”2A lo cual respondió el Faraón: “¿Quién es Yahvé para que yo escuche su voz y deje ir a Israel? No conozco a Yahvé, y no dejaré salir a Israel.” But he responded: “Who is the Lord, that I should listen to his voice and release Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not release Israel.”3Ellos dijeron: “El Dios de los hebreos se nos ha manifestado; permite, pues, que vayamos camino de tres días al desierto para ofrecer sacrificios a Yahvé, nuestro Dios, no sea que nos castigue con peste y espada.” And they said: “The God of the Hebrews has called us, so that we may go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God. Otherwise, a pestilence or the sword may befall us.”4EI rey de Egipto les replicó: “¿Por qué vosotros, Moisés y Aarón, distraéis al pueblo de sus trabajos? Idos a vuestras cargas.” The king of Egypt said to them: “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, distract the people from their works? Go back to your burdens.”5Y agregó el Faraón: “He aquí que el pueblo de esa región es ahora numeroso y vosotros lo hacéis descansar de sus cargas.” And Pharaoh said: “The people of the land are many. You see that the turmoil has increased: how much more if you give them rest from the works?”6Aquel mismo día el Faraón dio a los sobrestantes del pueblo y a los escribas esta orden: Therefore, on the same day, he instructed the overseers of the works, and the taskmasters of the people, saying:7“No deis ya, como antes, al pueblo paja, para hacer ladrillos; que vayan ellos mismos a recoger paja. “You shall no longer give chaff to the people to form bricks, as before. But they may go and gather straw.8Pero exigidles la misma cantidad de ladrillos que hacían antes, sin rebajarla; pues son perezosos; por eso claman diciendo: Vamos a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios. And you shall impose upon them the same quota of bricks that they made before. Neither will you lessen anything, for they are idle, and therefore they cry out, saying: ‘We shall go and sacrifice to our God.’9Agrávense los trabajos sobre estos hombres, para que estén ocupados y no pierdan el tiempo con palabras mentirosas.” They shall be oppressed with works, and these shall occupy them, so that they may not agree to lying words.”10Fueron, pues, los sobrestantes del pueblo y los escribas, y hablaron al pueblo diciendo: “Esto dice el Faraón: No os daré más paja; And so the overseers of the works and the taskmasters went out and said to the people: “Thus says Pharaoh: I give you no chaff.11id vosotros mismos a juntar la paja donde podáis hallarla; pero vuestro trabajo no se disminuirá en nada.” Go, and collect it wherever you are able to find it. Neither will anything of your work be diminished.”12Se esparció el pueblo por todo el país de Egipto a buscar rastrojo para emplearlo en lugar de paja. And the people were dispersed through all the land of Egypt, in order to gather straw.13Y los sobrestantes los apremiaban, diciendo: “Terminad vuestro trabajo que os ha sido fijado para cada día, como cuando había paja.” Likewise, the overseers of the works pressured them, saying: “Complete your work each day, just as you were accustomed to do before, when straw was given to you.”14Y los escribas de los hijos de Israel, a quienes los sobrestantes del Faraón habían puesto sobre ellos, fueron castigados, diciéndoseles: “¿Por qué no habéis hecho, ni ayer ni hoy, la misma cantidad de ladrillos que antes?” And those who were first in the works of the sons of Israel were scourged by Pharaoh’s taskmasters, saying: “Why have you not filled the quota of bricks, neither yesterday, nor today, just as before?”15Fueron entonces los escribas de los hijos de Israel y clamaron al Faraón, diciendo: “¿Por qué tratas así a tus siervos? And the first among the sons of Israel came, and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying: “Why do act against your servants in this way?16No se da paja a tus siervos y se nos dice: Haced ladrillos. Y he aquí que tus siervos son castigados, siendo tu propio pueblo el que tiene la culpa.” Straw is not given to us, and yet the same amount of bricks is commanded. So we, your servants, are cut up by scourging, and injustice is done against your people.”17Él respondió: “Haraganes sois, grandes haraganes; por eso decís: Vamos a ofrecer sacrificios a Yahvé. And he said: “You are idle. And for this reason you say, ‘We shall go and sacrifice to the Lord.’18Id, pues, y trabajad; no se os dará paja, y habéis de entregar la cantidad fijada de ladrillos.” Therefore, go and work. Straw will not be given to you, and you will return the customary number of bricks.”19Los escribas de los hijos de Israel se vieron en grandes angustias, puesto que les fue dicho: “No disminuiréis (la cantidad) de vuestros ladrillos; ¡la obra de cada día en su día!” And the first among the sons of Israel saw themselves in a crisis, because it was said to them, “Nothing at all will be lessened from the bricks throughout each day.”20Se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que les estaban esperando cuando salieron de la presencia del Faraón, And they met with Moses and Aaron, who stood opposite them as they departed from Pharaoh.21y les dijeron: “Que Yahvé os vea y que Él juzgue por qué nos habéis hecho odiosos al Faraón y a sus siervos y puesto la espada en sus manos para matarnos.” And they said to them: “May the Lord see and judge, because you have caused our odor to become foul before Pharaoh and his servants, and you have provided him with a sword, in order to kill us.”22Se volvió entonces Moisés a Yahvé y dijo: “Señor, ¿por qué has hecho mal a este pueblo? ¿Con qué fin me has enviado? And Moses returned to the Lord, and he said: “Lord, why have you afflicted this people? Why have you sent me?23Pues desde que fui al Faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, está maltratando a este pueblo, y Tú de ninguna manera has librado a tu pueblo.” For from the time that I entered to Pharaoh, so as to speak in your name, he has afflicted your people. And you have not freed them.”
