1Era Abrahán ya viejo, de edad muy avanzada; y Yahvé había bendecido a Abrahán en todo. Now Abraham was old and of many days. And the Lord had blessed him in all things.2Dijo, pues, Abrahán al siervo más viejo de su casa, el cual administraba todo lo que tenía: “Pon, te ruego, tu mano debajo de mi muslo, And he said to the elder servant of his house, who was in charge of all that he had: “Place your hand under my thigh,3para que te haga jurar por Yahvé, Dios del cielo y Dios de la tierra, de que no tomarás mujer para mi hijo de las hijas de los cananeos en medio de los cuales habito; so that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.4sino que irás a mi tierra y a mi parentela, a fin de tomar mujer para mi hijo Isaac.” But that you will proceed to my land and kindred, and from there take a wife for my son Isaac.”5Respondiole el siervo: “Tal vez no quiera la mujer venir conmigo a este país. ¿Debo en tal caso llevar a tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste?” The servant responded, “If the woman is not willing to come with me into this land, must I lead your son back to the place from which you departed?”6Contestole Abrahán: “Guárdate de llevar allá a mi hijo. And Abraham said: “Beware that you never lead my son back to that place.7Yahvé, el Dios del cielo, que me sacó de la casa de mi padre y del país de mi nacimiento, y que me habló y me juró, diciendo: ‘A tu descendencia daré esta tierra’; Él enviará su ángel delante de ti, de modo que puedas traer de allí mujer para mi hijo. The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my nativity, who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ himself will send his Angel before you, and you will take from there a wife for my son.8Si la mujer no quisiere venir contigo, estarás libre de este mi juramento, pero no lleves allá a mi hijo.” But if the woman is not willing to follow you, you will not be held by the oath. Only do not lead my son back to that place.”9Entonces puso el siervo su mano debajo del muslo de Abrahán, su señor, y le prestó juramento sobre estas cosas. Therefore, the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his lord, and he swore to him on his word.10Luego tomó el siervo diez camellos de su señor y emprendió el viaje, llevando consigo las cosas más preciosas que tenía su señor, y levantándose se dirigió a Mesopotamia, a la ciudad de Nacor. And he took ten camels from his lord’s herd, and he went forth, carrying with him things from all of his goods. And he set out, and continued on, to the city of Nahor, in Mesopotamia.11Allí hizo arrodillar los camellos fuera de la ciudad, junto al pozo de agua, al caer la tarde, al tiempo que suelen salir las mujeres a sacar agua; And when he had made the camels lie down outside of the town, near a well of water, in the evening, at the time when women are accustomed to go out to draw water, he said:12y dijo: “Yahvé, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, concede, te ruego, que tenga suerte hoy, y ten misericordia de mi señor Abrahán. “O Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, meet with me today, I beg you, and show mercy to my lord Abraham.13Heme aquí en pie junto a la fuente de aguas, adonde las hijas de los habitantes de la ciudad están saliendo a sacar agua. Behold, I stand near the fountain of water, and the daughters of the inhabitants of this city will go forth to draw water.14Ahora bien, la joven a quien yo dijere: ‘Baja, por favor, tu cántaro para que yo beba’, y ella respondiere: ‘Bebe tú, y también a tus camellos daré de beber’, esa sea la que designaste para tu siervo Isaac; y en esto conoceré que has tenido misericordia de mi señor.” Therefore, the girl to whom I will say, ‘Tip your pitcher, so that I may drink,’ and she will respond, ‘Drink. In fact, I will give your camels a drink also,’ the same one is she whom you have prepared for your servant Isaac. And by this, I will understand that you have shown mercy to my lord.”15Aún no había acabado de hablar, cuando he aquí que salía Rebeca, hija de Batuel, el hijo de Milcá, mujer de Nacor, hermano de Abrahán. But he had not yet completed these words within himself, when, behold, Rebekah went out, the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham, having a pitcher on her shoulder.16La joven era de muy hermoso aspecto, virgen, que no había conocido varón. Bajó a la fuente, llenó su cántaro y volvió a subir. She was an exceedingly elegant girl, and a most beautiful virgin, and unknown by man. And she descended to the spring, and she filled her pitcher, and then was returning.17El siervo le salió al encuentro y dijo: “Dame de beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro.” And the servant ran to meet her, and he said, “Provide me with a little water to drink from your pitcher.”18“Bebe, señor mío”, respondió ella, y se apresuró a bajar el cántaro de su mano, y le dio de beber. And she responded, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly brought down the pitcher on her arm, and she gave him a drink.19Y después de darle de beber, dijo: “También para tus camellos sacaré agua, hasta que acaben de beber.” And after he drank, she added, “In fact, I will draw water for your camels also, until they all drink.”20Y vaciando apresuradamente su cántaro en el abrevadero, corrió otra vez al pozo para sacar agua, y sacó para todos sus camellos. And pouring out the pitcher into the troughs, she ran back to the well to draw water; and having drawn, she gave it to all the camels.21Entretanto el hombre la contemplaba en silencio por saber si Yahvé había bendecido o no su camino. But he was contemplating her silently, wanting to know whether the Lord had caused his journey to prosper or not22Cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, tomó el hombre un anillo de oro, de medio siclo de peso, y dos brazaletes que pesaban diez siclos de oro para los brazos de ella. Then, after the camels drank, the man took out gold earrings, weighing two shekels, and the same number of bracelets, ten shekels in weight.23Y preguntó: “¿De quién eres hija? Dime, te ruego, ¿hay en casa de tu padre lugar para pasar la noche?” And he said to her: “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, is there any place in your father’s house to lodge?”24Ella le contestó: “Soy hija de Batuel, el hijo de Milcá, a quien ella dio a luz a Nacor.” She responded, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, to whom she gave birth for Nahor.”25Y agregó: “Tenemos paja y forraje en abundancia, y lugar para pernoctar.” And she continued, saying, “There is very much straw and hay with us, and a spacious place to stay.”26Entonces se postró el hombre y adoró a Yahvé, The man bowed himself down, and he adored the Lord,27y dijo: “Bendito sea Yahvé, el Dios de mi señor Abrahán, que no ha dejado de mostrar su benevolencia y su fidelidad para con mi señor, pues me ha guiado Yahvé en el camino a la casa de los hermanos de mi señor.” saying, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who has not taken away his mercy and truth from my lord, and who has led me on a direct journey to the house of the brother of my lord.”28Entretanto, la joven se fue corriendo y contó en casa de su madre todas estas cosas. And so the girl ran, and she reported all that she had heard in the house of her mother.29Tenía Rebeca un hermano que se llamaba Labán. Salió entonces Labán presuroso afuera en busca del hombre que estaba junto a la fuente. Now Rebekah had a brother, named Laban, who went out quickly to the man, where the spring was.30Había visto el anillo, y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, y había oído las palabras de Rebeca, su hermana, que decía: “Así me habló el hombre.” Vino, pues, al hombre cuando este estaba todavía con los camellos junto a la fuente. And when he had seen the earrings and bracelets in his sister’s hands, and he had heard all the words being repeated, “This is what the man spoke to me,” he came to the man who stood by the camels and near the spring of water,31Y dijo: “¡Entra, bendito de Yahvé! ¿Por qué te quedas afuera?, pues tengo preparado la casa, y un lugar para los camellos.” and he said to him: “Enter, O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”32Fue el hombre a la casa, y desaparejó los camellos, Entretanto dio (Labán) paja y forraje a los camellos, y agua para que se lavasen los pies al hombre y los que le acompañaban. And he brought him into his guest quarters. And he unharnessed the camels, and he distributed straw and hay, and water to wash his feet and that of the men who arrived with him.33Después le sirvió la comida; mas él dijo: “No comeré hasta que haya dicho mi mensaje.” A lo que respondió (Labán): “Habla.” And bread was set out in his sight. But he said, “I will not eat, until I have spoken my words.” He answered him, “Speak.”34Dijo, pues: “Yo soy siervo de Abrahán. Then he said: “I am the servant of Abraham.35Yahvé ha colmado de bendiciones a mi señor, el cual se ha hecho rico, pues le ha dado ovejas y ganado, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. And the Lord has blessed my lord greatly, and he has become great. And he has given him sheep and oxen, silver and gold, men servants and women servants, camels and donkeys.36Y Sara, mujer de mi señor, envejecida ya, dio a luz un hijo a mi señor, quien le ha dado todo cuanto posee. And Sarah, the wife of my lord, has given birth to a son for my lord in her old age, and he has given him all that he had.37Y me hizo jurar mi señor, diciendo: «No tomarás mujer para mi hijo de las hijas de los cananeos en cuya tierra habito, And my lord made me swear, saying: ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell.38sino que irás a casa de mi padre y a mi parentela, y traerás mujer para mi hijo». But truly, I answered my lord, ‘What if the woman is not willing to come with me?’40Mas él respondió: «Yahvé, en cuya presencia ando, enviará su ángel contigo, y prosperará tu camino, y así tomarás mujer para mi hijo de mi parentela y de la casa de mi padre. ‘The Lord,’ he said, ‘in whose sight I walk, will send his Angel with you, and he will direct your way. And you shall take a wife for my son from my own kindred and from my father’s house.41Serás libre de mi maldición cuando llegues a mi parentela; si no te la dieren, libre quedarás entonces de mi maldición». But you will be innocent of my curse, if, when you will arrive at my close relatives, they will not grant this to you.’42Ahora bien, llegué hoy a la fuente y dije: «Yahvé, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, si en verdad Tú bendices el camino por donde yo ando, And so, today I arrived at the well of water, and I said: ‘O Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, if you have directed my way, in which I now walk,43he aquí que me quedo junto a la fuente de agua; si saliere una doncella a sacar agua, y yo le dijere: ‘Dame de beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro’, behold, I stand next to the well of water, and the virgin, who will go forth to draw water, will hear from me, “Give me a little water to drink from your pitcher.”44y ella me respondiere: ‘Bebe tú, y también para tus camellos sacaré agua’, esa será la mujer que Yahvé ha designado para el hijo de mi señor. And she will say to me, “You drink, and I will also draw for your camels.” Let the same be the woman, whom the Lord has prepared for the son of my lord.’45Y aún no había acabado de hablar en mi corazón, cuando he aquí que salía Rebeca, con su cántaro al hombro, y ella bajó a la fuente y sacó agua. Yo le dije: «Dame, te ruego, de beber» And while I thought over these things silently within myself, Rebekah appeared, arriving with a pitcher, which she carried on her shoulder. And she descended to the spring and drew water. And falling prostrate, I adored the Lord, blessing the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who has led me along the straight path so as to take the daughter of my lord’s brother to his son.49Por lo cual, si ahora queréis usar de benevolencia y lealtad con mi señor, decídmelo; y si no, decídmelo también, para que yo me dirija a la derecha o a la izquierda.” For this reason, if you would act according to mercy and truth with my lord, tell me so. But if it pleases you otherwise, say that to me also, so that I may go either to the right, or to the left.”50Respondieron Labán y Batuel, diciendo: “De Yahvé viene esto; nosotros no podemos decirte ni mal ni bien. And Laban and Bethuel responded: “A word has proceeded from the Lord. We are not able to speak anything else to you, beyond what pleases him.51Ahí tienes a Rebeca, tómala y vete, y sea ella mujer del hijo de tu señor, como lo ha dispuesto Yahvé.” Lo, Rebekah is in your sight. Take her and continue on, and let her be the wife of the son of your lord, just as the Lord has spoken.”52Cuando el siervo de Abrahán oyó lo que decían, se postró en tierra ante Yahvé. When Abraham’s servant had heard this, falling down to the ground, he adored the Lord.53Y sacó el siervo objetos de plata y objetos de oro y vestidos y los dio a Rebeca; hizo también ricos presentes a su hermano y a su madre. And bringing forth vessels of silver and gold, as well as garments, he gave them to Rebekah as a tribute. Likewise, he offered gifts to her brothers and her mother.54Después comieron y bebieron, él y los hombres que le acompañaban y pasaron la noche. And rising up in the morning, the servant said, “Release me, so that I may go to my lord.”55A lo cual respondieron el hermano de ella y su madre: “Quédese la niña con nosotros algunos días, unos diez; después partirá.” And her brothers and mother responded, “Let the girl remain for at least ten days with us, and after that, she will continue on.”56Mas él les contestó: “No me detengáis, ya que Yahvé ha bendecido mi viaje; despedidme para que vaya a mi señor.” “Do not be willing,” he said, “to delay me, for the Lord has directed my way. Release me, so that I may journey to my lord.”57Ellos dijeron: “Llamemos a la joven y preguntemos lo que diga ella.” And they said, “Let us call the girl, and ask her will.”58Llamaron, pues, a Rebeca, y la preguntaron: “Quieres ir con este hombre.” “Iré”, contestó ella. And when, having been called, she arrived, they wanted to know, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”59Entonces despidieron a Rebeca, su hermana, y a su nodriza, y al siervo de Abrahán con sus hombres. Therefore, they released her and her nurse, and the servant of Abraham and his companions,60Y bendijeron a Rebeca, diciéndole: “¡Hermana nuestra, crezcas en millares y decenas de millares, y apodérese tu descendencia de la puerta de sus enemigos!” wishing prosperity for their sister, by saying: “You are our sister. May you increase to thousands of thousands. And may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”61Después se levantó Rebeca con sus doncellas, y montadas sobre los camellos, siguieron al hombre, el cual tomó a Rebeca y partió. And so, Rebekah and her maids, riding upon camels, followed the man, who quickly returned to his lord.62Entre tanto Isaac había vuelto del pozo del “Viviente que me ve”; pues habitaba en la región del Négueb; Then, at the same time, Isaac was walking along the way that leads to the well, whose name is: ‘of the One who lives and who sees.’ For he dwelt in the southern land.63y por la tarde cuando salió al campo a meditar y alzó los ojos vio que venían unos camellos. And he had gone out to meditate in the field, as daylight was now declining. And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw camels advancing from afar.64También Rebeca alzó sus ojos y viendo a Isaac, descendió del camello; Likewise, Rebekah, having seen Isaac, descended from the camel.65y preguntó al siervo: “Quién es aquel hombre que viene por el campo a nuestro encuentro” Contestó el siervo: “Es mi señor.” Entonces ella tomó su velo y se cubrió. And she said to the servant, “Who is that man who advances to meet us through the field?” And he said to her, “That is my lord.” And so, quickly taking up her cloak, she covered herself.66El siervo contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho; Then the servant explained to Isaac all that he had done.67y condujo Isaac a Rebeca a la tienda de Sara, su madre; y tomó a Rebeca, la cual pasó a ser su mujer; y la amó; y así se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre. And he led her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and he accepted her as wife. And he loved her so very much, that it tempered the sorrow which befell him at his mother’s death.
