Génesis 31
1Oyó Jacob las palabras de los hijos de Labán, que decían: “Jacob se ha apoderado de todo lo que era de nuestro padre, y con la hacienda de nuestro padre ha adquirido toda esta riqueza.” But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”2Jacob observó también el rostro de Labán y vio que no era para él como antes. Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.3Dijo, pues, Yahvé a Jacob: “Vuélvete a la tierra de tus padres y a tu parentela, y Yo estaré contigo.” Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”4Entonces Jacob envió llamar a Raquel y a Lía al campo, donde estaban sus rebaños, He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,5y le dijo “Veo que el rostro de vuestro padre no es para mí como antes, mas el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo. and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.6Como sabéis he servido a vuestro padre con todas mis fuerzas; And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.7pero vuestro padre se ha burlado de mí, cambiando diez veces mi salario, aunque Dios no le ha permitido dañarme. Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.8Si él decía: ‘Las ovejas salpicas serán tu salario’, todas las ovejas parían crías salpicadas. Y se decía: ‘Las listadas serán tu salario’, todas las ovejas parían crías listadas. Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.9De esta suerte Dios ha quitado la hacienda de vuestro padre y me la ha entregado a mí. And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.10Al tiempo que las ovejas entraban en calor, alcé mis ojos y vi en sueños que los machos que cubrían el ganado eran listados, salpicados y manchados, For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.11Y me dijo el Ángel de Dios en sueño: ‘¡Jacob!’, a lo cual yo respondí: ‘Heme aquí.’ And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’12Y dijo Él: ‘Alza los ojos, y verás que todos los machos que cubren el ganado son listados, salpicados y manchados, porque he visto todo lo que te ha hecho Labán. And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.13Yo soy el Dios de Betel, donde ungiste un monumento, y donde me hiciste un voto. Ahora, pues, levántate, sal de esta tierra, y vuelve al país de tu nacimiento.” I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’ ”14Respondieron Raquel y Lía, diciéndole: “¿Tenemos acaso todavía alguna parte y herencia en la casa de nuestro padre? And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?15¿No nos ha tratado como extranjeras?, pues nos vendió, y se comió por completo nuestro dinero. Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?16Mas ahora toda la riqueza que Dios ha quitado a nuestro padre, es nuestra y de nuestros hijos. Haz, pues, cuanto te ha dicho Dios.” But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”17Se levantó entonces Jacob, hizo subir a sus hijos y a sus mujeres sobre los camellos, And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.18y llevándose todo su ganado, y toda su hacienda que había adquirido, los bienes que había ganado en Mesopotamia, y se fue a Isaac, su padre, al país de Canaán. And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.19Labán había ido a esquilar sus ovejas. Entre tanto robó Raquel los terafim que tenía su padre, At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.20y Jacob engañó a Labán, arameo, no comunicándole su huída. And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.21Pues huyó con todo lo que era suyo, y levantándose pasó el río, y se encaminó hacia las montañas de Galaad. And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,22Al tercer día recibió Labán la noticia de que Jacob había escapado. it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.23Entonces tomó a sus hermanos consigo, y persiguiéndolo durante siete días, le dio alcance en la montaña de Galaad. And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.24Mas Dios se llegó a Labán, arameo, en sueño durante la noche y le dijo: “Guárdate de decir a Jacob cosa alguna, sea buena, sea mala.” And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”25Alcanzó, pues Labán a Jacob, cuando este tenía fijadas sus tiendas en el monte, y acampó también Labán, con sus hermanos, en el monte de Galaad. And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.26Y dijo Labán a Jacob: “¿Qué es lo que has hecho? Me engañaste y te has llevado a mis hijas como cautivas de guerra. And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?27¿Por qué escapaste secretamente, engañándome, y no me avisaste? Te habría despedido con alegría y cantos, con tamboriles y cítaras. Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?28Ni siquiera me has dejado besar a mis hijos y a mis hijas. De veras, has obrado neciamente. You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,29Está en mi mano el haceros mal; pero el Dios de vuestro padre me habló anoche, diciendo: ‘Guárdate de decir a Jacob cosa alguna, sea buena, sea mala.’ my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’30Mas ya que has partido, porque tanto deseabas ir a la casa de tu padre, ¿por qué has robado mis dioses?” It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”31Contestó Jacob, y dijo a Labán: “Tuve miedo, pues pensaba que tal vez me quitarías tus hijas. Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.32En cuanto a tus dioses, aquel en cuyo poder los encuentres, que muera. En presencia de nuestros hermanos haz tus pesquisas, y en caso que tengo yo algo, llévatelo.” Pues Jacob no sabía que Raquel los había robado. But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.33Entró entonces Labán en la tienda de Jacob, y en la tienda de Lía, y en la tienda de las dos siervas, y no halló nada. Salió de la tienda de Lía, y entró en la tienda de Raquel. And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,34Mas Raquel había tomado los terafim y los había metido en la albarda del camello, sentándose encima, y a Labán que registró toda la tienda, sin encontrar nada, she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me37Después de registrar todo mi equipaje, ¿qué has hallado de todos los objetos de tu casa? Ponlo aquí delante de mis hermanos y de tus hermanos, y sean ellos jueces entre nosotros dos. and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.38Hace veinte años que estoy contigo, y tus ovejas y tus cabras no han abortado, y no me he comido los carneros de tu rebaño. For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.39Lo destrozado no te lo he mostrado, pues yo mismo pagaba el daño; y lo robado de noche y lo robado de día de mi mano lo reclamabas. Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.40De día me consumía el calor, y de noche el frío, y huía el sueño de mis ojos. Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.41Esta ha sido mi suerte por veinte años en tu casa. Catorce años te he servido por tus dos hijas, y seis años por tu rebaño; y diez veces has cambiado mi salario. And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.42Si el Dios de mi padre, el Dios de Abrahán y el Temor de Isaac, no hubiera estado conmigo, me habrías ahora despedido con las manos vacías. Mas Dios ha visto mi aflicción, y el trabajo de mis manos; y Él (te) recriminó la noche pasada.” If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”43Respondiendo dijo Labán a Jacob: “Las hijas, hijas mías son, los hijos son hijos míos y los rebaños, rebaños míos; y todo cuanto ves, mío es. Mas ¿qué puedo hacer hoy a estas mis hijas, o a sus hijos que ellas han dado a luz? Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?44Ahora, ven, pues, pactemos alianza, yo y tú, que será para testimonio entre los dos.” Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”45Tomó entonces Jacob una piedra, y la erigió en monumento. And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.46Y dijo Jacob a sus hermanos: “Recoged piedras.” Y recogieron piedras e hicieron un montón; y comieron allí sobre aquel montón. And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.47Labán lo llamó “Jegar-Sahaduta”, y Jacob lo llamó “Galaad”. And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.48Y dijo Labán: “Este majano sea hoy testigo entre mí y entre ti” Por eso se le dio el nombre de Galaad, And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)49y también de Masfá, porque dijo: “¡Vele Yahvé sobre nosotros dos, cuando nos hallemos separados el uno del otro! “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.50Si tu maltratas a mis hijas, o si tomas otras mujeres, además de mis hijas, estará entre nosotros no un hombre; mira, es Dios quien estará como testigo entre los dos.” If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”51Y siguió diciendo Labán a Jacob: “He aquí este majano, y he aquí este monumento que he erigido entre mí y entre ti; And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,52este majano sea testigo, y testigo sea este monumento de que yo no pasaré este majano yendo contra ti, y de que tú no pasarás este majano y este monumento yendo contra mí para hacerme mal. will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.53El Dios de Abrahán, el Dios de Nacor y el Dios de sus padres sea juez entre nosotros”. May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.54Luego ofreció Jacob un sacrificio en el monte e invitó a sus hermanos a comer. Comieron, pues, y pasaron la noche en el monte. And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.55A la mañana se levantó Labán muy temprano, besó a sus hijos y a sus hijas y los bendijo; luego se puso en camino para volver a su lugar. In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.
