Génesis 39
1José fue llevado a Egipto; y Putifar, eunuco del Faraón, capitán de la guardia, egipcio, le compró a los ismaelitas que allá le habían llevado. Meanwhile, Joseph was led into Egypt. And Putiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, a leader of the army, an Egyptian man, purchased him from the hand of the Ishmaelites, by whom he was brought.2Mas Yahvé estaba con José e hizo prosperar lo que hacía. Habitaba en casa de su señor, el egipcio; And the Lord was with him, and he was a man who prospered in everything that he did. And he lived in the house of his lord,3y su señor vio que Yahvé le asistía y que Yahvé favorecía en sus manos todas sus empresas. who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and that all the things that were done by him were directed by his hand.4Así José halló gracia a sus ojos, y le servía de tal manera que le encargó el gobierno de su casa y puso en sus manos todo lo que tenía. And Joseph found favor in the sight of his lord, and he ministered to him. And, having been placed in charge of everything by him, he governed the house that was entrusted to him and all the things that had been delivered to him.5Y sucedió que desde el tiempo en que le encargara el gobierno de su casa y de todo lo que tenía, Yahvé bendijo la casa del egipcio por amor a José; y la bendición de Yahvé se derramó sobre todo lo que tenía, tanto en la casa como en el campo; And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian, because of Joseph, and he multiplied all his substance, as much in the buildings, as in the fields.6de manera que dejó todo lo suyo en manos de José, sin tener otra preocupación que la de comer. Now Joseph was beautiful in form, and stately in appearance.7Acaeció después de estas cosas que la mujer de su señor puso los ojos en José y dijo: “Acuéstate conmigo.” And so, after many days, his mistress cast her eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Sleep with me.”8Pero él rehusó, diciendo a la mujer de su señor: “Es verdad que mi señor no me pide cuentas acerca de lo que tiene en su casa, y todos sus bienes los ha puesto en mi mano; And without consenting at all to the wicked act, he said to her: “Behold, my lord has delivered all things to me, and he does not know what he has in his own house.9nadie hay en esta casa que sea más grande que yo, y él no se ha reservado nada, a excepción de ti, por cuanto eres su mujer. ¿Cómo, pues, voy a hacer esta gran maldad y pecar contra Dios?” Neither is there anything which is not in my power, or that he has not delivered to me, except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this evil act and sin against my God?”10Todos los días hablaba ella así, pero él no consintió en acostarse a su lado y estarse con ella. With such words as these, throughout each day, the woman was pestering the young man, and he was refusing the adultery.11Mas cuando cierto día entró en la casa para cumplir su tarea, y no había ninguno de los sirvientes de la casa allí dentro, Then it happened, on a certain day, that Joseph entered the house, and he was doing something, without any witnesses.12le asió de su vestido y dijo: “Acuéstate conmigo.” Pero él, dejando su vestido en mano de ella, huyó y salió afuera. And she, grasping the hem of his garment, said, “Sleep with me.” But he, leaving behind the cloak in her hand, fled and went outside.13Viendo ella que le había dejado su vestido en la mano y había huido afuera, And when the woman saw the garment in her hands and herself being treated with disrespect,14llamó a los sirvientes de su casa y les dijo: “Mirad, nos ha traído un hebreo para que se burle de nosotros; vino a mí para acostarse conmigo, pero yo clamé a grandes voces; she called to herself the men of her house, and she said to them: “Lo, he has brought in a Hebrew man to abuse us. As a proof, therefore, of her fidelity, she retained the cloak, and she showed it to her husband, when he returned home.17A este le habló en los mismos términos, diciendo: “Vino a mí el siervo hebreo que nos trajiste, para burlarse de mí; And she said: “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought in to me, approached me to abuse me.18pero cuando yo levanté mi voz y grité, dejó su vestido junto a mí y huyó afuera.” And when he had heard me cry out, he left behind the cloak that I held, and he fled outside.”19Al oír el señor las palabras que su mujer le hablaba, diciendo: “Esto me ha hecho su siervo”, montó en cólera, His lord, upon hearing these things, and having excessive trust in the words of his mate, was very angry.20y tomando a José lo metió en la cárcel, en el lugar donde se guardaban los presos del rey; y allí quedó en la cárcel. And he delivered Joseph into prison, where the prisoners of the king were kept, and he was enclosed in that place.21Mas Yahvé estaba con José, y le mostró su misericordia, haciéndolo grato a los ojos del jefe de la cárcel, But the Lord was with Joseph, and, having mercy on him, he gave him favor in the sight of the leader of the prison,22de tal manera que el jefe de la cárcel puso todos los presos que había en la cárcel en manos de José, y sin José no se hacía nada allí. who delivered into his hand all the prisoners who were held in custody. And whatever was done, was under him.23El jefe de la cárcel no se cuidaba de cosa alguna que estaba en manos (de José), porque Yahvé le asistía, y Yahvé favorecía todas sus acciones. Neither did he himself know anything, having entrusted all things to him. For the Lord was with him, and he directed everything that he did.
