Génesis 44
1Después dio José al mayordomo de su casa esta orden: “Llena de provisiones los costales de estos hombres cuanto puedan llevar y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal. Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.2Pon también mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, juntamente con el dinero de su trigo.” Y él hizo según la orden que José había dado. But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.3Al rayar el alba se despidieron los hombres con sus asnos. And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.4Pero apenas habían salido de la ciudad, hallándose aún a poca distancia de ella, dijo José al mayordomo de su casa: “Levántate y corre tras esas gentes, y cuando los alcances, les dirás: “¿Por qué habéis devuelto mal por bien? And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?5¿No es esta (la copa) en que bebe mi señor, y por medio de la cual suele adivinar? Habéis obrado mal en lo que hicisteis.” The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”6Y él, habiéndolos alcanzado, les repitió estas mismas palabras. He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.7Contestáronle: “¿Por qué dice mi señor tal cosa? Lejos de tus siervos hacer algo semejante. And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?8He aquí que hemos vuelto a traerte desde el país de Canaán el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales; ¿cómo íbamos a robar de la casa de tu señor plata u oro? The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?9Aquel de tus siervos en cuyo poder fuere hallada, muera, y en cuanto a nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.” Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”10Sea así como decís, respondió él. Aquel en cuyo poder fuere hallado será mi siervo; mas vosotros quedaréis sin culpa.” And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”11Con esto se apresuraron a bajar cada uno su costal a tierra; y abrió cada cual su costal. And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.12Y él (los) registró, empezando por el mayor, y acabando por el menor, y fue hallada la copa en el costal de Benjamín. And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.13Rasgaron entonces sus vestidos, y cargando cada uno su asno, volvieron a la ciudad. But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.14Así llegó Judá con sus hermanos a la casa de José —este se hallaba todavía allí— y se echaron delante de él a tierra. And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.15Díjoles José: “¿Qué es lo que habéis hecho? ¿No sabíais que un hombre como yo sabe adivinar?” And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”16A lo cual respondió Judá: “¿Qué podemos decir a mi señor? ¿Qué vamos a hablar, o cómo nos justificaremos? Dios ha descubierto la iniquidad de tus siervos. Henos aquí, siervos somos de mi señor, tanto nosotros como aquel en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa.” And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”17“Lejos de mí hacer tal cosa, contestó José. El hombre en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa, ese será siervo mío; vosotros, empero, subid en paz a casa de vuestro padre.” Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”18Entonces Judá se acercó a él, y dijo: “Por favor, señor mío, permite que tu siervo diga una palabra a oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu ira contra tu siervo; porque tú eres igual al Faraón. Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.19Mi señor preguntó a sus siervos, diciendo: ‘¿Tenéis padre o hermano?’ My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’20Respondimos a mi señor: ‘Sí, tenemos un padre anciano, y un niño de su vejez, que es el menor y cuyo hermano murió, de modo que él solo le ha quedado de su madre, y su padre le ama’. And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’21Tú dijiste entonces a tus siervos: ‘Traédmelo, para que ponga mis ojos sobre él’. And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’22Mas nosotros respondimos a mi señor: ‘El joven no puede dejar a su padre; porque si lo dejare, su padre morirá’. We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’23Pero tú dijiste a tus siervos: ‘Si no baja con vosotros vuestro hermano menor, no volveréis a ver mi rostro’. And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’24Subimos, pues a casa de tu siervo, mi padre, y le contamos las palabras de mi señor. Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.25Y cuando dijo nuestro padre: ‘Volved a comprarnos algo para comer’, And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’26contestamos nosotros: ‘No podemos bajar. Pero si nuestro hermano menor va con nosotros, bajaremos; pues no podremos ver el rostro de aquel hombre, a no ser que vaya con nosotros nuestro hermano menor’. And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’27Entonces nos dijo tu siervo, mi padre: ‘Vosotros sabéis que mi esposa me dio dos hijos. To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.28El uno desapareció de mi presencia, y yo dije: Sin duda ha sido devorado, y hasta ahora no le he visto más. One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.29Si lleváis también a este de mi presencia, y le sucede alguna desgracia, haréis descender con dolor mis canas al sepulcro’. If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’30Ahora, pues, si yo llego a tu siervo mi padre, y no está con nosotros el joven, de cuya vida depende la suya, Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)31sucederá que al ver que el joven no existe, morirá; y así tus siervos harán descender con dolor al sepulcro las canas de tu siervo, nuestro padre. and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.32Porque tu siervo se hizo responsable por el joven ante mi padre, diciendo: ‘Si no te lo vuelvo a traer, seré para siempre reo de pecado contra mi padre’. Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’33Te ruego, pues, que tu siervo quede en lugar del joven por esclavo de mi señor, a fin de que el joven pueda volver con sus hermanos. And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.34Pues ¿cómo podré yo subir a casa de mi padre, sin que el joven esté conmigo? ¡No vea yo el mal que vendrá sobre mi padre!” For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”
