1Por lo cual, dejando la doctrina elemental acerca de Cristo, elevémonos a la perfección, no tratando de nuevo los artículos fundamentales que se refieren a la conversión de las obras muertas y a la fe en Dios, Therefore, interrupting an explanation of the basics of Christ, let us consider what is more advanced, not presenting again the fundamentals of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,2a la doctrina de los bautismos, a la imposición de las manos, a la resurrección de los muertos y al juicio eterno. of the doctrine of baptism, and also of the imposition of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.3Y así procederemos con el favor de Dios. And we shall do this, if indeed God permits it.4Porque a los que, una vez iluminados, gustaron el don celestial, y fueron hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo, For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, and have even tasted of the heavenly gift, and have become sharers in the Holy Spirit,5y experimentaron la bondad de la palabra de Dios y las poderosas maravillas del siglo por venir, who, despite having tasted the good Word of God and the virtues of the future age, have yet fallen away,6y han recaído, imposible es renovarlos otra vez para que se arrepientan, por cuanto crucifican de nuevo para sí mismos al Hijo de Dios, y le exponen a la ignominia pública. to be renewed again to penance, since they are crucifying again in themselves the Son of God and are still maintaining pretenses.7Porque la tierra que bebe la lluvia, que cae muchas veces sobre ella, produce plantas útiles para aquellos por quienes es labrada, y participa de la bendición de Dios; For the earth accepts a blessing from God, by drinking in the rain that often falls upon it, and by producing plants that are useful to those by whom it is cultivated.8pero la que produce espinas y abrojos es reprobada y está próxima a la maldición y su fin es el fuego. But whatever brings forth thorns and briers is rejected, and is closest to what is accursed; their consummation is in combustion.9Mas de vosotros, carísimos, esperamos cosas mejores y conducentes a la salvación, aunque hablamos de esta manera. But from you, most beloved, we are confident that there will be things better and closer to salvation; even though we speak in this way.10Porque no es Dios injusto para olvidarse de vuestra obra y del amor que habéis mostrado a su nombre, habiendo servido a los santos y sirviéndolos aún. For God is not unjust, such that he would forget your work and the love that you have shown in his name. For you have ministered, and you continue to minister, to the saints.11Pero deseamos que cada uno de vosotros manifieste hasta el fin el mismo interés en orden a la plenitud de la esperanza, Yet we desire that each one of you display the same solicitude toward the fulfillment of hope, even unto the end,12de manera que no seáis indolentes, sino imitadores de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia son herederos de las promesas. so that you may not be slow to act, but instead may be imitators of those who, through faith and patience, shall inherit the promises.13Porque cuando Dios hizo promesa a Abrahán, como no pudiese jurar por otro mayor, juró por sí mismo, For God, in making promises to Abraham, swore by himself, (because he had no one greater by whom he might swear),14diciendo: “Por mi fe, te bendeciré con abundancia, y te multiplicaré grandemente”. saying: “Blessing, I shall bless you, and multiplying, I shall multiply you.”15Y así, esperando con paciencia, recibió la promesa. And in this way, by enduring patiently, he secured the promise.16Pues los hombres juran por el que es mayor y el juramento es para ellos el término de toda controversia, por cuanto les da seguridad. For men swear by what is greater than themselves, and an oath as confirmation is the end of all their controversy.17Por lo cual, queriendo Dios mostrar, con mayor certidumbre, a los que serían herederos de la promesa, la inmutabilidad de su designio, interpuso su juramento; In this matter, God, wanting to reveal more thoroughly the immutability of his counsel to the heirs of the promise, interposed an oath,18para que mediante dos cosas inmutables, en las que es imposible que Dios mienta, tengamos un poderoso consuelo los que nos hemos refugiado en aferrarnos a la esperanza que se nos ha propuesto, so that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have the strongest solace: we who have fled together so as to hold fast to the hope set before us.19la cual tenemos como áncora del alma, segura y firme, y que penetra hasta lo que está detrás del velo; This we have as an anchor of the soul, safe and sound, which advances even to the interior of the veil,20adonde, como precursor, Jesús entró por nosotros, constituido Sumo Sacerdote para siempre según el orden de Melquisedec. to the place where the forerunner Jesus has entered on our behalf, so as to become the High Priest for eternity, according to the order of Melchizedek.
