1Santiago, siervo de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, a las doce tribus que están en la dispersión: salud. James, servant of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes of the dispersion, greetings.2Tenedlo, hermanos míos, por sumo gozo, cuando cayereis en pruebas de todo género, My brothers, when you have fallen into various trials, consider everything a joy,3sabiendo que la prueba de vuestra fe produce paciencia. knowing that the proving of your faith exercises patience,4Pero es necesario que la paciencia produzca obra perfecta, para que seáis perfectos y cabales sin que os falte cosa alguna. and patience brings a work to perfection, so that you may be perfect and whole, deficient in nothing.5Si alguno de vosotros está desprovisto de sabiduría, pídala a Dios, que a todos da liberalmente sin echarlo en cara, y le será dada. But if anyone among you is in need of wisdom, let him petition God, who gives abundantly to all without reproach, and it shall be given to him.6Mas pida con fe, sin vacilar en nada; porque quien vacila es semejante a la ola del mar que se agita al soplar el viento. But he should ask with faith, doubting nothing. For he who doubts is like a wave on the ocean, which is moved about by the wind and carried away;7Un hombre así no piense que recibirá cosa alguna del Señor. then a man should not consider that he would receive anything from the Lord.8El varón doble es inconstante en todos sus caminos. For a man who is of two minds is inconstant in all his ways.9Gloríese el hermano: el humilde, por su elevación; Now a humble brother should glory in his exaltation,10el rico, empero, por su humillación, porque pasará como la flor del heno: and a rich one, in his humiliation, for he will pass away like the flower of the grass.11se levanta el sol con su ardor, se seca el heno, cae su flor, y se acaba la belleza de su apariencia. Así también el rico se marchitará en sus caminos. For the sun has risen with a scorching heat, and has dried the grass, and its flower has fallen off, and the appearance of its beauty has perished. So also will the rich one wither away, according to his paths.12Bienaventurado el varón que soporta la tentación porque, una vez probado, recibirá la corona de vida que el Señor tiene prometida a los que le aman. Blessed is the man who suffers temptation. For when he has been proven, he shall receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.13Nadie cuando es tentado diga: “Es Dios quien me tienta”. Porque Dios, no pudiendo ser tentado al mal, no tienta Él tampoco a nadie. No one should say, when he is tempted, that he was tempted by God. For God does not entice toward evils, and he himself tempts no one.14Cada uno es tentado por su propia concupiscencia, cuando se deja arrastrar y seducir. Yet truly, each one is tempted by his own desires, having been enticed and drawn away.15Después la concupiscencia, habiendo concebido, pare pecado; y el pecado consumado engendra muerte. Thereafter, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. Yet truly sin, when it has been consummated, produces death.16No os engañéis, hermanos míos carísimos: And so, do not choose to go astray, my most beloved brothers.17De lo alto es todo bien que recibimos y todo don perfecto, descendiendo del Padre de las luces, en quien no hay mudanza ni sombra (resultante) de variación. Every excellent gift and every perfect gift is from above, descending from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor any shadow of alteration.18De su propia voluntad Él nos engendró por la palabra de la verdad, para que seamos como primicias de sus creaturas. For by his own will he produced us through the Word of truth, so that we might be a kind of beginning among his creatures.19Ya lo sabéis, queridos hermanos. Mas todo hombre ha de estar pronto para oír, tardo para hablar, tardo para airarse; You know this, my most beloved brothers. So let every man be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to anger.20porque ira de hombre no obra justicia de Dios. For the anger of man does not accomplish the justice of God.21Por lo cual, deshaciéndoos de toda mancha y resto de malicia, recibid en suavidad la palabra ingerida (en vosotros) que tiene el poder de salvar vuestras almas. Because of this, having cast away all uncleanness and an abundance of malice, receive with meekness the newly-grafted Word, which is able to save your souls.22Pero haceos ejecutores de la palabra, y no oidores solamente, engañándoos a vosotros mismos. So be doers of the Word, and not listeners only, deceiving yourselves.23Pues si uno oye la palabra y no la practica, ese tal es semejante a un hombre que mira en un espejo los rasgos de su rostro: For if anyone is a listener of the Word, but not also a doer, he is comparable to a man gazing into a mirror upon the face that he was born with;24se mira, y se aleja (del espejo), y al instante se olvida de cómo era. and after considering himself, he went away and promptly forgot what he had seen.25Mas el que persevera en mirar atentamente la ley perfecta, la de la libertad, no como oyente olvidadizo, sino practicándola efectivamente, este será bienaventurado en lo que hace. But he who gazes upon the perfect law of liberty, and who remains in it, is not a forgetful hearer, but instead a doer of the work. He shall be blessed in what he does.26Si alguno se cree piadoso y no refrena su lengua, sino que engaña su corazón, vana es su piedad. But if anyone considers himself to be religious, but he does not restrain his tongue, but instead seduces his own heart: such a one’s religion is vanity.27La piedad pura e inmaculada ante el Dios y Padre es esta: visitar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en su tribulación y preservarse de la contaminación del mundo. This is religion, clean and undefiled before God the Father: to visit orphans and widows in their tribulations, and to keep yourself immaculate, apart from this age.
